Looking for info on James BELL, b 1898 possibly Queensland. Gave his parents as John Bell, painter/Jane Bell (Stewart). James served with the 15th Batt Australian Imperial Force and was in Scotland around 1918. Would love to trace his movements to complete my research on extended family.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Illigitimate birth and DNA results
« on: Sunday 14 January 18 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Confused about the answer! I have a birth of G/father around 1875 in Ireland. His mother died at childbirth and he was raised by an aunt. There was no father registered on birth cert. So the question is: will I be able to trace a line further back, and how far if there is no G/Gfather regisitered? I have tested and results were R-M269.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Stanners/Stenhouse, Carriden
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 03:42 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to help a friend get to the bottom of a long term mystery.

Would be grateful if anyone can throw a light on why/when the name Stanners would suddenly become Stenhouse?

We are tracing a family and have James STANNERS marrying Margaret CRICHTON, June 1818 at Carriden. James' parents were George STANNERS/Elizabeth LECKIE.

Their first child appears to be Margaret Thomson STANNERS b. 1819, Carriden. BUT subsequent siblings have the name STENHOUSE, if we have the correct family.

George - b. 1821
Andrew - b. 1825
Elizabeth - b. 1826
William Dalzel - b. 1827, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh
James - b. 1831, St Cuthberts
Frederick John - b. 1835, St Cuthberts

Our particular interest is on Elizabeth STENHOUSE, who married William Burns, Nov 1849, Leith, d 1888 in Glasgow Poorhouse.

Here's hoping.....

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Mac software?
« on: Sunday 27 December 15 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
Over the years I've used most genealogy software, to various degrees of success. Lately I've come across one, set up for Mac users and really very intuative to use, and reasonably priced. Contact, if needed with the help desk is very quick for a response time. Check it out as a demo. Oh the name: iFamily for Mac.
Check it out here:

Australia / STRONG family - Ormeau, Queensland Australia
« on: Sunday 29 November 15 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

trying to trace the STRONG family members down under. Originally from Barrowfield, Glasgow in the early sixties. John Strong last known location in Ormeau, Queensland, about 10 years ago when he would have been about 70. There were 6 brothers and one sister living in Glasgow before some of them moved. My connection is through my granma, Bedelia 'dea' Dempster. Here's hoping.

United States of America / McLintock, Massachusetts

Hi

I'm hoping some kind American 'cousin' could maybe help....

I'm searching for info on Joseph Wilson McLintock, born 6th May 1879 in Kilmarnock, Scotland who went over to Boston from Glasgow abt 1906. I have records of him there as a 'fireman' then I have record of his death, ' fractured skull, accidentally falling down elevator well' at Hotel Bancroft, Worcester, MA, on Nov 26 1918. Burial was at Hope Cem, Worcester. He was 39 at his death and looks as if he came from Pawtucket, R.I.

My questions are:

would there have been a report in the press regarding the accident?

is there any headstone at the grave, maybe someone local would know this?

would 'fireman' be a 'firefighter' in modern terms?

I'm interested in his accident as I served as an operational fireman in Yorkshire for 27 years and would love to know more about Joseph and his family.

Looking forward to some directing me in the right direction here. Thanks

Lanarkshire / Death in Police Station James Dempster
« on: Sunday 25 January 15 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying for ages to locate a 'missing' relie, James Dempster, married 1808 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire. I have no birth/death details yet.

I have come across a possible record for a similar name/time for a death of James Dempster, 50, noted in the OPRs for Glasgow 1847. It states, 'Died in Police Station, buried in Common Ground'. I know the Dempsters started to move from Ayrshire to Glasgow around that time, so hopefully this might be the link.

Anyway question is, if someone died in Police Station would there have been an official inquiry about the death? If so and it could be located it may provide further info...and where might it be found?
