The Common Room / Catherine Maria Rix b.1859 Canada
« on: Monday 25 February 19 06:59 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the family of Catherine (Kate) Rix
In 1861 she was in Canada with her parents Edward b.1826 and Charlotte b.1830 and siblings Joseph Edward, Charlotte and Minie (I think she was Muriel)
According to the marriage certificate with her second husband (Experious Ollerenshaw) in Everton in 1893, her father was Edward Jones, mechanic. I think the registrar made a mistake - Kate's first husband was Jones, not her father.
I think Kate's mother was Charlotte Parks because in 1881 Kate/Catherine was living with grandparents Joseph and Mary Park in Pwllheli, working as a barmaid in their pub. She married Robert Jones in 1882 in Pwllheli, and had 3 children with him, Mary, Joseph and Charlotte.
I can't find any immigration documents for any of the family returning to UK, or any emigration documents for that matter.
It is possible Edward was christened Joseph Edward, son of Joseph Rix b.1809.
Any help with any of these people would be very welcome. Thanks

England / George Tagg b.1877
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 08:17 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the death of George Tagg. He was born in 1877 in South Ferriby, Lincs.
In 1907 he married Isabella Adelaide Meeks in Marylebone, London. They had one child, Cecil William Tagg, b.1915 in Fulham.
I have found George on censuses for 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911. Also on the 1920 electoral register living at 137 Wandsworth Bridge Rd, Fulham with his wife Isabella.
There is a death registered in 1928 in Islington for a George William Tagg, but as there is no evidence that his second name was William. By 1930 his widow had married again.
Can anyone find an alternative death for George between 1920 and 1930? If not I will send for the above mentioned certificate.

The Common Room / Lily Willetts b.1930 Royston, Barnsley
« on: Tuesday 15 January 19 08:01 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the parents of Lily Willetts b.1930. She had a sister called Irene b.1928 also in Royston, Barnsley. GRO gives the mother's maiden name of both girls as Baker. I can't find a marriage between a Willetts and a Baker, nor find either child on the 1939 Register. Can anyone help please?

Derbyshire / Thomas Potter b.1864 Mackworth, Derbyshire
« on: Sunday 20 May 18 09:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for Thomas Potter b.1864 Mackworth, Derbyshire.
In 1884 he married Ellen Peat in Derby and had  6 children with her. In 1901 he is described a carrier on a farm. In 1891 he is not shown with his wife (who is with her mother in Ashleyhay, Derbyshire).
I have been through all the censuses for Mackworth and can't find any family he might fit.
Can anyone help, please?

England / Ellen Coles b.1865 Coventry?
« on: Thursday 12 October 17 06:52 BST (UK)  »
Ellen may have been born illegitimately to Henrietta Wesley in Coventry Workhouse in 1865.
In 1886 she emigrated to Albany, Australia with husband Frederick George Coles (I have no details about his origins. His occupation on his son's marriage certificate in 1919 is Seaman, Merchant Service). I can't find a marriage for them.
In Australia she had children Rose Florence b.1891, William Henry b.1893, Frederick George b.1896 and possibly another with first name initial H. In 1898 he left her husband and bought the children back from Albany to London via Cape Colony. A family member says she returned to her own family in Coventry.
Her son Frederick George's military record says she was living at 66 Junction Rd, Coventry in 1916, but had also lived at 31 Weston St. I can't find her on any census.
In 1901 her children Rose and Frederick were boarding with Mrs Maycock, launderess, in Ryton-on-Dunsmore. Her other son William Henry was in Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital. But where was she?
I'm also interested in her husband. Where was he born and did he stay in Australia? I found a Frederick George labouring in Coolgardie, Australia in 1903 and 1906. Did he join the Merchant Navy?
I'd be very grateful for any help.

Family History Beginners Board / Dorothy Madeline Armstrong b.1924
« on: Monday 28 August 17 06:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for Dorothy Madeline Armstrong. In 1948 she married Graham Arthur Jinks in Edgbaston. Her age was given as 24, i.e. she was born in 1924.
Her father was named as John Howard Armstrong, hotel manager and her address is given as 22 Raglan Road, Edgbaston.
I can't find any evidence of her birth. Can anyone help please?

The Common Room / Ernest Samuel Williams b.1886 Gloucestershire
« on: Friday 28 July 17 07:32 BST (UK)  »
I have Ernest Samuel (b. in 1911 Gloucs), a coal miner, living in Quarry Rd, Pontypridd with wife Mary Jane Dale.
I found this marriage in FreeBMD but not in Ancestry.
They had a son, also Ernest Samuel Williams, b.1906 in Bristol. According to this son's marriage certificate, Ernest Samuel senior, was a fish and fruit merchant, but I can find no trace of him.
There IS an Ernest Samuel Williams in Bristol at that time but he is not the right one as he appears on the 1911 census within a different family.
Can anyone help, please?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Jane Ann Gill b.1902 Wakefield
« on: Saturday 15 July 17 08:20 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for any information about Jane Ann Gill, known later as Ginnie.
She was born in Wakefield in 1902, christened in 1903. Her parents were Nathan Gill and Charlotte (nee Lister). She had 4 sisters and a brother.
Ginnie had a daughter, probably illegitimate, and died in childbirth, year not known.
This daughter, name not known, may have been adopted by a couple called John and Ivy Ingham, family friends.
The daughter married a cobbler and lived in one of the small mining villages in Yorkshire in the 1950's.
Very little to go on, I realise, but any help would be most welcome.
Thank you, Tess

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / John Howard
« on: Friday 05 May 17 07:23 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find John Howard. He appears on the birth certificates of his 3 children -
1. Alice Annie Howard b.1866, living 2 Richmond Rd, Dalston
2. Ellen Grace Howard b.1867, living 25 Enfield Rd South, Kingsland, London N1
3. Herbert John Howard b.1874, living 25 Enfield Rd
Their mother was Ellen Jane, nee Sturt, b.1837 Islington
There was another daughter Catherine Maud b.1870 Hackney but I don't have her birth certificate.
John is described as a mercantile clerk on the 3 birth certificates
I can find no record of a marriage between John Howard and Ellen Jane Sturt.
In 1841 Ellen was living with her parents William and Ann Sturt in Shoreditch
I can't find Ellen Jane in 1851 or 1861. In 1871 she is at 25 Enfield Rd, Hackney, living with her daughters Alice and Ellen and her widowed mother Ann Sturt. She described herself as a widow but son Herbert John Howard was born in 1874
In 1881 Ellen Jane, pensioner, was living in 15 Darville Rd, Stoke Newington with children Alice and Herbert and widowed mother Ann Sturt. We think Ellen Jane received financial support from her parents.
Where was John? Please can anyone help?
