Midlothian / House of Muir, Kirknewton and East Calder, Midlothian
« on: Sunday 07 April 13 20:29 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information and/or images of the House of Muir in Kirknewton.  Walter Graham (1816-1894), his wife Agnes Ormiston Graham (1817-1873), and their youngest son David (1854-1942) lived there at the time of the 1871 census.  Walter is listed as a farmer of "80 acres, all arable."  David Graham was my great-grandfather.  Any information would be appreciated.

Selkirkshire / James Thomas Greenshields and Fountainhall School
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
James Thomas Greenshields (1863-1925) was the schoolmaster at Fountainhall School at his death in 1925.  He may have begun his tenure there soon after his return from South Africa in 1917.  Can anyone point me to records or provide information about him, his career, and his family (wife Janet Fowler) and children Margaret, Gavin, and Janet?  James is apparently buried in the area.

South Africa / Teachers in Union of South Africa 1910-1920
« on: Thursday 21 March 13 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have two family members who spent time in South Africa around 1910 to 1917.  One was definitely a teacher, and I assume the other was as well.  Does anyone know of general historical resources that might discuss the role Scottish teachers might have played in the educational system of the new Union of South Africa formed in 1910?  Are there newspapers recruiting teachers?  Are there lists of teachers who went there to teach?

Peeblesshire / Gavin Greenshields
« on: Monday 18 March 13 20:26 GMT (UK)  »
Gavin Greenshields (1821-1890) was my great-great grandfather.  His daughter Helen Watson Greenshields emigrated to the states (South Dakota)with her husband David Graham (1854-1942) and gave birth to my grandfather, Maynard David Graham.

The linked article from the Journal of Horticulture and Practical Gardener[/i] (21 Jan.1892) makes him sound like quite a character: a former blacksmith turned grocer, horticulturalist, fisherman, and self-educated man.  I know that he built a house called Thornbank and that two of his daughters, Jessie and Jane, ran the grocery after him.  His youngest son John Christie died young at age 26,  and both he and his older brother George Watson Greenshields worked for the railroad.  Another son James Thomas became a schoolteacher, went to South Africa, and became a schoolmaster at Fountainhall, Stow, where he died. His son Gavin was apparently a farmer in the area until the 1940s.

I would love to see a photo of the house, any photos that anyone might have of the family, or any other information about Gavin, his wife, and children would be appreciated.  (An obituary of Gavin Greenshields, for instance, bears references to Robert Browning--but I have not found the exact source of that obit.)

I am also wondering if any Greenshields still reside in the Broughton area.

Thanks for any and all help.
