The Common Room / Land Tenure in Elizabethan times
« on: Saturday 29 August 15 15:39 BST (UK)  »
I have seen a transcription of a manor survey of Halesworth in Suffolk for the year 1577.  Most people hold their land by "bond tenure" with some holding by copyhold, some "in villeinage" and one property held "by charter".

I understand copyhold, but wonder if anyone knows what the other tenures involve, especially in light of the time period; they sound medieval but we are well beyond that period.

Any light anyone can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

The Common Room / National Archives Catalogue

I'm having trouble getting into the National Archives' online catalogue - I repeatedly get error messages.  Is it just me or are other people having this problem too?

The Common Room / Birth Order
« on: Monday 29 September 14 13:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Does anybody know how to get children into the right birth order on Ancestry if you don't know their dates of birth?  I have a family of children born in the 1520s and early 1530s.  I know their birth order but not their dates of birth.  I would like to get them on the tree in the right order but I'm reluctant to put in estimated dates of birth that are misleading and may be a few years out.  Does anybody have any ideas?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Words from Will of 1558 COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 06 September 14 20:37 BST (UK)  »
I'd be grateful if someone could please let me know what the words underlined in green are?  The Will is of Agnes Prime.  This is a complicated clause that I have had to crop down quite a bit for size.  She seems to be saying that her son John should enter into a bond of thirty pounds with her executor against her oldest son Thomas of the payment of twenty pounds that she did borrow?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Will from 1610 please
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 22:00 BST (UK)  »
I have had a struggle to read the Will of John Prime of Halesworth in Suffolk from 1610. In this passage between the pink highlights he is describing his farm which he is leaving to his eldest brother but I can only discern, I think, the words "messuage" "tenement" "meadows" and "pastures".  If anyone can transcribe the whole thing I'd be very grateful.  Thank you in advance.

I am thinking of purchasing Family Tree Maker.  I would like to know if it is completely tied in to Ancestry.  I know you can sync your Ancestry trees with FTM but at some future date could I use FTM completely independently of Ancestry?

I apologise if this has been asked before, I did a search but couldn't come up with an answer.

Thanks in anticipation.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / John Prime - Wortwell
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 21:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

According to the 1851 Census John Prime was born in Wortwell in about 1780.  At the time of the census he was living in nearby Redenhall.  I have not been able to find a baptism for him in the Archdeacon's Transcripts of Redenhall/Harleston/Wortwell.  I'd be obliged if someone could check for me in the registers for the Wortwell Congregational Chapel for his possible baptism there.

Thank you in anticipation.  :)
