Europe / Swedish help please
« on: Friday 13 March 20 06:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
i have been trying to solve a brick wall. I have got a DNA match that may be helpful as they seem to be an illegitimate descendant of my great-grandfather. Great-grandfather's maternal grandfather is a mystery 'George Wilson'. His daughter, my great-great grandmother was born in the countryside of Victoria, Australia, in the mid 1850s. There is no birth record, and no marriage record of her parents. Her mother's history is known to our family, but not her father's.
Using mutual matches between the DNA match and my aunt, I eliminated those from my great-grandfather's paternal side and from his mother's maternal side. The few remaining matches, ergo, must be from his mother's paternal side. They seem to lead to a Hogan family who emigrated to the US from Sweden.
John Hogan seems to have been born in December 1854 in Varberg, Hallands, Sweden. His wife was Josefina Augusta Stevenson, October 1858, Hallands. If my great-great-great grandfather is from this family, it would be from at least 2 or 3 generations further back, so I am trying to take these lines further back and then try and go forwards in time to see if anyone ended up in Australia.
I am wondering how can I access Swedish Church records for Varberg, or if anyone is able to help in any other way.
Of course my ancestor might also be descended from the family that the Hogans' son Harry married into as well, which is James J Reilly 1860 Dublin, who married Jane Frances Summers, of Lanarkshire Scotland, born 1868.
Any help that anyone can offer will be gratefully accepted!

Hello, I have a photo of a bad photocopy of a photograph of my 2xgreat grandmother Catherine New, nee Harrison. I used an enhancing app to try and get a better idea of what she looked at, but the shadows on the original blotchy photocopy have made it look like she has a beard! Is anyone able to restore her face, so that it doesn't have those beard-moustache-like shadows? Any help gratefully accepted!

Hello, I wonder if anyone is able to restore this very faded photo? (Maybe even add a spot of colour?)
Many thanks in advance.

London and Middlesex / Searching for Jane Mary Bendall
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 07:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am wondering if someone is able to help me track down the parents of Jane Mary Bendall who married Thomas Waldrom on 11 April 1847 at St Luke, Chelsea. Her father's name was James. Going by the 1851 census, she was born 1811; the 1861 census 1815. Going by her death (in NZ) in 1925, she was born in 1834 - which would make for a very young marriage indeed! Perhaps she was born by around 1830. Any help would be much appreciated.

Australia / Smoothy family - Tasmania to Victoria
« on: Saturday 09 December 17 08:36 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone is able to help me. I have an interesting close (approximately 3-4th cousin) DNA match on myheritage who has a 'match in common' with my grandmother's cousin. This person is not a match on ancestry.com. The last name of the match is Matson. A couple of days ago I got a DNA match with a person on ancestry who also had a common match with the Matson line.
My grandmother and her cousin's maternal grandmother is a big mystery as she was fostered in Geelong and there are no records. She was born around 1870.
Looking at the Matson trees, there appears to be only one link to Australia, through the 'Smoothy' line. My match's ancestor was Edward W Smoothy, born 1840, in Hobart. Parents were John Smoothy and Ann Miskelly.
Edward Smoothy and his wife left Victoria for the South Island around 1866 and is unlikely to be a parent of my great-great grandmother. I found on familysearch a few more Smoothys leaving Victoria for NZ in the late 1860s early 1870s.
According to a shipping record from 1852 when the Smoothy family in question left Tasmania for Melbourne, they had several children - John jnr, Edward William, Mary, Walter and Andrew.
I may be completely wrong, but I suspect one of the children to be a parent of my great-great grandmother as they are the right age and in more-or-less the right place. I am having a really hard time finding any trace of them after they moved to Victoria, and would really appreciate any help you could give in tracking them down.

Gloucestershire / Norah Hawkins and James Mackenzie
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 11:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am trying to find information about Norah Hawkins who married James Mackenzie. I am not sure of the best board to post in, but as she died in Gloucestershire I thought perhaps here.
Norah was born in Belfast, 1876, daughter of Henry Hawkins and Margaret Ruxton. Her father died in 1884.
In 1891, she is living in Aberdeen with her mother, likewise in the 1901 census.
There is a record of her having arrived in Liverpool from America in 1892, so presumably had gone on a holiday there. Another passenger record is from 1912 when she left London for India. She was married sometime between 1901 and 1912 as the passenger list has her as Mrs Norah Mackenzie.
She died in Cheltenham on 24 Feb 1947, where newspaper reports confirmed who she was (her sister was Mrs O St John Skeen (maiden name Mabel Hawkins).
I can not find any trace of Norah's marriage or if she had any children, and I was wondering if someone might be able to help.
