The Common Room / Can my Ancestry account be hacked?
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
In the last week I have had 3 messages on Ancestry that I am concerned about. The messages are not abusive and are not asking for money but they are nothing to do with family history....just things like 'how's it going'.  I wondered if anyone else had anything similar and wondered if an Ancestry account could be hacked

The Common Room / Missing entry on GRO for Grace Bamlett
« on: Thursday 13 July 23 11:26 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandmother died in 1899.  I have found her entry on FreeBMD and I would like to order her death certificate but I can't find her on the GRO website. This is the entry on FreeBMD. Can anyone see her on the GRO website?
Thank you

Northumberland / Margaret Hume and John Carmichael
« on: Sunday 21 May 23 15:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am looking for the marriage of Margaret HUME and John CARMICHAEL.

Margaret Hume was born in 1808 in Wooler, Northumberland.  She was the daughter of John Hume and Jane Hall.  The first three sons of John Carmichael and Margaret Hume were also born in Wooler.  James (1834), Samuel (1835) and Robert (1837).

The family then sailed out to New Brunswick, Canada.  They were part of a group of farm labourers and tradesmen who were recruited by the New Brunswick Land Company and set sail in May 1837 from Berwick on Tweed aboard the ship ‘Cornelius’.  They had more children in Canada and this part of their life is well documented on the internet by a history group interested in the settlement.
Can anyone find their marriage?

Many Thanks
Christine

The Lighter Side / Who do you think you are series 20
« on: Saturday 06 May 23 08:06 BST (UK)  »
I've just read that a new series of Who Do You Think You Are is coming up.  It's  due to be broadcast in early June. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kevin Clifton (from Strictly) are two of the celebrities.

The Common Room / Married by publication
« on: Tuesday 28 March 23 17:07 BST (UK)  »
I have a marriage of George Bowes and Grace Rymer at Great Langton, Yorkshire, in 1740. The Parish Register says ' married by publication'.  Not sure exactly what this means?  Is it something to do with banns being read.

Lanarkshire / 225 Bath Street Glasgow
« on: Friday 13 January 23 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
My great aunt, Annie Bamlett married John Innes Gall in Kirkpatrick-Fleming in 1919.  She originated from Durham.  He was born in Arbroath, Scotland and at the time of their marriage he was an engineer at the HM Greta Ammunitions factory.  Soon after their marriage, they moved to live and work in Spain where John Innes Gall worked for the Rio Tinto Mining Company.

Annie returned to England, presumably for holidays and to see family on a number of occasions. On a couple of these trips in the 1930’s, she gives her address in the UK as 225 Bath Street, Glasgow. (Source:  Ancestry passenger lists)
As far as I know she had no family in Glasgow.  Does anyone know anything about this address in the 1930’s

Many thanks

Technical Help / FTM advice
« on: Tuesday 08 November 22 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently bought Family Tree Maker 2019. It syncs with Ancestry. I have an Ancestry subscription.  My question is...if I delete a tree on Family Tree Maker will that tree also be deleted on Ancestry

Thankyou
Christine

Lincolnshire / Betsy Robinson - Who are your parents?
« on: Wednesday 07 September 22 11:28 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the parents of my 2 x great grandmother, Betsey Robinson.
Betsey Robinson married William Hackin(g) Gray on 27 February 1860 at Witton-Le-Wear, County Durham.  Betsey names her father as Richard Robinson, laborer.  She gives her age as 19.
Bride and Groom both sign with a mark and the witnesses are Henry Jackson and Elizabeth Walker.

On the 1861 census (3072/91 page 9) Betsey and William are at Habergham Eaves in Lancashire with their baby daughter, Alice Hacking Gray (Graf on Ancestry).  Betsey gives her age as 19 and birthplace as Barnetby, Lincolnshire.
I have the family on all the census records until Betsey dies in 1910.  In all the census from 1861 the family are living in Durham and all the children are born in Durham.  Betsey consistently gives her year of birth as 1844 and her place of birth as either Barnetby or Wrawby in Lincolnshire.
On the 1901 census her widowed sister Mary A Jackson (nee Robinson) b. 1833, Wrawby is living with the family.

Most trees on Ancestry give her parents as Richard Robinson and Elizabeth Hall, but I’m sure these are NOT her parents.
Mary (Betsey' sister) appears on previous census returns ‘married’ to Henry Jackson (I’m not certain if this is the same Henry Jackson who is a witness to the marriage of Betsey Robinson and William Hacking Gray), but I can’t find a marriage for them to see who Mary names as her father.

I sent for the birth certificate of Betsy Robinson born 1844 GRO ref 1844 S Quarter Glanford Brigg Union Vol 14 Page 341 MMN Benton (I think this should be Belton) but the father’s name was George Robinson and the birthplace was Ashby

Any help to find her parents would be appreciated.  Many thanks
Chris
