The Common Room / Is moving all over the UK common in the early 1800s?
« on: Friday 11 January 19 00:53 GMT (UK)  »
I am curious as to how likely it would be for one of my ancestors (Margaret Cochrane b. 1786) who was born in Dunbar, East Lothian to move to Portsea, Hampshire in the early 1800s?  It seems like a very far distance to travel when most of my ancestors around that time pretty much stayed where there were or didn't move too far away.  I do know that Margaret Cochrane married John Riddel in 1816, and the only instance of a Cochrane marrying a Riddel occured in Portsea in 1816.  This is the only way I can potentially place Margaret Cochrane in Portsea. By 1819 they were in Aberdeenshire.  How common at this time was it to move around the UK as much as they seem to have?

Thanks,

United States of America / James McMartin and Sophia Horton - help needed
« on: Monday 03 December 18 01:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on my 3xg-grandparents James McMartin and Sophia Horton. He was born about 1799 (I think in Ireland), was living in King (York County, Ontario, Canada) in 1852, and I think died before 1861. Sophia was born around 1810 in Ontario (according to the census).  The children that I know of are Elijah (married Matilda Wood), Denis, Isaac, Loretta, William, Sarah, Daniel and James (jr). It appears that several of his children moved to the USA (mainly to Michigan). I have not been able to find a death record for either James or his wife Sophia either in Canada or the US. This is all the information I have on him. Any information that can be provided (such as parents, marriage date, death date, immigration...) would be great.

I have also posted this in the Canada forum.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Thomas BULMER - Hatfield, W. Yorkshire
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on Thomas Bulmer.  According to his gravestone he was born on 10 Sep 1793 but I have not been able to find a record of his birth/baptism (I don't know where in England he was born or who his parents are).  Thomas just appeared in Hatfield sometime before his marriage.  He married Mary Bowling in 1816.  They had 6 children (Thomas, William, Henry, Ann, John and Elizabeth) born in Hatfield before they immigrated to Canada (where they had 2 more children: Mary and John).  Thomas Bulmer died in 1881 in Montreal, Quebec.

Any information on Thomas Bulmer (most interested in prior to his marriage) is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thank you,

Has anyone made a connection between James Pitt, a shopkeeper in Hereford (Bye-town street and High-town) from 1830-1851 and James Pitt baptized on 23 Mar 1807 in Canon Frome.  James Pitt the shopkeeper is my ancestor but I don't know if he is the same James Pitt baptized in Canon Frome.  If yes, then I am able to trace this line further back.  If no, then I have a bit of a brick wall.

Hi,

Does anyone live in or around Hereford who would be willing to go to the the All Saints Churchyard in Clehonger?  I would like a photo and the inscription (if not legible) of the gravestone for Charles (Rufford) Bennett (b. 1787, d. 1841) and his wife Lydia Bennett (d. 1868).  Are there any Bennetts close by to that of Charles and Lydia?

Many thanks!
