Was trying to fill in a few details on a person appearing in my tree (in laws of in laws so not a true relation!) when I noticed something that make me take more interest.

Gertrude Mary Bastin was born in 1962 in Staffordshire.
Staffordshirebmd has a birth with a mothers maiden name of Cornish (in 1862) and 2 possible siblings
- Charles Edward Bastin born 1861
- Frederick John Bastin born 1864
The next time I can find her is 1881 census in Staffordshire with her parents John and Mary and siblings
Catherine
Hannah
John
Emma
Ethel
The youngest Ethel being born in Stoke Newington, Middlesex and the other 4 in Adelaide, Australia.

Ancestry has birth records for the 4 children in Adelaide, Australia, the children of John Bastin and Mary Cornish.
There are also 2 others (with deaths as infants)
John Francis Bastin b. 1870
Agnes Ellen Bastin b. 1871
But I cant find any record of the family travelling to or from Australia

They must have left the UK between 1864 and 1869 (Between Frederick birth in UK and Catherine in Australia in 1869) and returned between 1875 and 1879 (Emma born in Australia and Ethel in UK)

In addition to Australia, the mother Mary and daughters Hannah, Ethel and Emma are in Staffordshire in 1891 (no sign of John but see is still listed as married), but the next possible record is in Canada in 1901 for Mary, Emma and Ethel. Again cant see any travelling records.

Summary
Looking for
- Travel to Australia between 1864-1869
- Travel from Australia between 1875-1879
- Travel to Canada between 1891-1901

Hope someone can help
Thanks in advance

Donegal / Ireland births - possible sources for confirmation of mothers maiden name
« on: Tuesday 20 October 15 13:49 BST (UK)  »
I am new to Irish records so please bear with me.

I have a family member who marries in Staffordshire in 1895
Her name was Elizabeth Loffill b 1866
She married James Enoch Bentley. b. 1868
Banns were also read in Cornwall for the marriage as he is stationed on HMS Cambridge at the time.
I cannot locate the family in Staffordshire or Cornwall (or mainland UK) in 1901 or 1911.

His service record suggests that he was in Ireland at the time of 1901 and 1911 census in England and Wales.
James Enoch Bentley died in 1959 (Derbyshire) and probate was granted to Harry Bentley

I located an entry in 1911 Ireland Census in Down/Mullartown/Moneydorragh More which showed a family
James Bentley 42
Elizabeth 40
James 12
Ada 9
Harry 8
with all children born Donegal

I did a websearch and found a site showing Coastguard births and baptisms for Donegal which gave the following

James Enoch Bentley born 3 Oct 1898, Kinnegar
Ida Elizabeth Bentley born 27 May 1901, Teelin
Harry Bentley born 10 Jul 1903, Teelin
Father is given as James Enoch Bentley. Mother is Elizabeth.
But maiden name is given as Gray (as is another Elizabeth on the page).

I was wondering where I could look to find records of birth which could help confirm that these are the individuals I am looking for (MMN Loffill).

Thank you in advance

I have found 2 marriage entries for James Enoch Bentley in 1895.
One on 29 April 1895 in Dresden, Staffordshire to Elizabeth Loffill daughter of John. His father is Samuel. Both fathers are deceased and were potters.
The other is 31 Mar 1895 in Torpoint, Cornwall with a spouse listed as Elizabeth Loffell but doesn't list a father in the transcription record.
I was wondering if someone with access to the records could check to see if the marriages are for the same people (marrying twice in 2 different counties within a month).
Thanks in advance.

Canada / Charles Reuben Keen
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Noticed the following information when searching online
Keen, Charles Reuben cremated 20 Oct 1961 - Alberta Crematorium

I was wondering if an obituary or any other information would be available anywhere for this individual.
I have "lost" a Charles Reuben Keen who was born in Staffordshire around 1886 and was wondering if he had emigrated, so looking for any records about the individual in Calgary which would help determine if he was my relative or not.

Thank you in advance

Glamorganshire / Needle in a haystack - Help requested - Llangynwyd/Maesteg
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 13:44 BST (UK)  »
I am struggling to trace my ancestors prior to their marriage in 1867, can any one help - do you have them in your tree?

My ancestors were married in Llangynwyd on 26 Oct 1867 (by banns)
David Williams (full), collier of Alma Road, Maesteg, son of David Williams (shopkeeper)
married
Jane Evans (minor) of Commercial Street, Maesteg, dtr of John Evans (collier)
Witnessed by Cecilia Evans & Thomas Evans (parish clerk)

1871 census shows the following at 6 Cross Street, Maesteg
David Williams 24? born Pontardulais
Jane Williams 20 born Llangynwyd
plus 2 children

1881 shows 6 Cross Street, Maesteg
David Williams 39? born Pontardulais
Jane Williams 30 born Llangynwyd
plus 4 children

1891 15 Station Street, Maesteg
David Williams 40? born Pontardulais
Jane Williams 40 born Maesteg
plus 4 children

1901 12 Princess Street
David Williams 59? born Swansea
Jane Williams 51 born Maesteg

1911 1 Llwydarth Road
David Williams 67? born Pontardulais
Jane Williams 61 born Maesteg

I believe that Jane's mother is Ann, as one of the children (Mary Ann Williams) is living with Ann Evans (widow) as a granddaughter in 1891 in Rock Street, Maesteg
Ann is a shopkeeper.

Hope someone can help, or even just a fresh pair of eyes

Hopefully yours and thanks in advance

Lancashire / Thomas Moore b. unknown d unknown
« on: Tuesday 12 May 15 13:01 BST (UK)  »
I am not sure if I am posting this in the correct county but think the answer may lie somewhere in the Salford area.

I have an individual that I am trying to find out about (trying to link two families together).
Kate Pyatt was born in Cheadle, Staffordshire in 1887, the daughter of John and Kate Pyatt.
There is a marriage in Cheadle in 1912 to John McCann.
This marriage occured on 13 Apr 1912 in St Giles, Cheadle and gives her fathers name as Joannis Pyatt (John Pyatt) and spouse as Joannes McCann (John McCann).

However the 1911 census has John and Kate Pyatt living in 94 High Street, Cheadle with their daughter Kate Moore. Kate Moore being married for 2 years with no children.

A search of Freebmd and Lancashirebmd has identified a marriage in Salford in 1908 between Kate Pyatt and Thomas Moore.

So if Kate marries John McCann in 1912, Thomas must have "died" between 1908 and 1912.
I cannot locate a death of a Thomas Moore in that time period that would be an appropriate age to be Kate's husband.

Does anyone have any suggestions or access to any records that may assist?

Staffordshire / Simon Pyatt and family
« on: Wednesday 22 April 15 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Simon Pyatt (son of James Pyatt) married Harriet Rowley (dtr of Thomas Rowley) on 11 July 1850 in St Margaret, Wolstanton.

The 1851 census shows
Bow Street, Northwood, Hanley
Simon Pyatt 33 born Cheadle
Hannah Pyatt 33 born Trentham
James Pyatt 2m born Hanley

Staffordshirebmd has the following births with MMN Rowley
James Pyatt 1851
Thomas Pyatt 1852
Arthur Pyatt 1854
Francis Pyatt 1856

I cant locate the family on any census other than 1851.
Was wondering if SKS could help please.

Thank you in advance

Derbyshire / Louisa Brown baptism and parents and their marriage
« on: Monday 14 July 14 21:19 BST (UK)  »
Trying to track down the parents and their marriage of Louisa Brown along with her baptism.
The information I have is as follows.
Louisa Brown age 27 married Walter Blurton on 17 Dec 1857 at All Saints Church, Derby, Derbyshire. Father named as William Brown.
Census info
1861 born approx 1831 in Doveridge, Derbyshire, living in Caverswall, Staffs with husband & child
1871 born approx 1834 Aston, Derbyshire living in Llanfair, Montgomeryshire with husband & family
1881 born approx 1831 Sutton, Derbyshire living in St Werburgh, Derbyshire with husband & family
1891 born approx 1831 Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire, widow , in St Werburgh
1841 and 1851 show her living with Maria and Clara Harrison (sisters) and listed in 1851 as niece
Probate calendar shows death of Maria Harrison 26 June 1869 with Walter Blurton of Llanfair, Montgomeryshire as an executor.

There is a baptism for a Louisa Brown on 20 mar 1831 in Sutton on the Hill, dtr of William &Mary
Therefore given the above it is possible that mother could be Mary Harrison but I can't see an appropriate marriage to confirm names or that this is the correct baptism.

Hope someone can help
Thanks in advance.
