Technical Help / CD-R problem (video vanished)
« on: Friday 10 April 15 21:43 BST (UK)  »
This is so weird that I hardly dare even ask...
I was sent a video recorded on an audio CD-R 700MB disc. It played fine on my computer. Now when I try to play it again the disc seems to read as empty apart from a very small file with a line of text.
Any idea what has happened? All I did was play it, eject the disc and wait a few days. I am mystified. I tried it on a different computer and it was just the same. I can't have deleted it  :(
Thanks.

Hmmm, is it a good idea?

http://beta.discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/tags/index try typing words like "uncle" or "mum" in the search box and see what the dropdown offers you  :)

The Common Room / More detailed parish records - is there a word for them?
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi! I am just translating something into English. It relates to a series of records produced by the local priest once a year. He was supposed to make a parish census and record in it details about behaviour, church attendance and ownership of religious books etc.
Anyone know what that would be in English?  I seem to recall seeing something similar for an English parish but it was not in my "area" and I can't recall the details. Perhaps it was one of the none-C of E groups?

Midlothian / James Wight
« on: Monday 21 October 13 18:21 BST (UK)  »
There is a James Wight b.abt. 1825, in Leith in 1881 census.
Could somebody please tell me what his occupation is then, and in 1871?
Thanks a lot.

Oh oh! There seems to be another born abt 1830! I am looking for a horse/cattle dealer.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Hard to read description of clothes
« on: Thursday 17 October 13 17:46 BST (UK)  »
Can someone make out a couple of words for me?

... a short pair of white flannel running drawers not reaching to the knee, a ? ? football jersey...

The first word looks obvious enough but the second one is less so and I would appreciate extra eyes on this one. It was written around 1872 if that is any help.

Wicklow / Seymour family of Bray
« on: Sunday 24 February 13 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Is anyone able to fill in some blanks for me?
I have a George Seymour of Seapoint, Bray, born abt 1782, married Anne ??, buried 1849
George and Anne had a son Robert Seymour born abt 1804, married Alicia Clarke in 1847, died 1857

I would like to know if George and Anne had any other children? I am hoping for a George (would really like to know his year of birth) and Anne Matilda born abt 1816 (Wicklow according to 1851 census for England)

I know that George jnr was a ship owner but so far I have been unable to find him in the UK census and know little about him. His birth year would be a huge help

Many thanks.

The Common Room / House of Commons Sessional Papers
« on: Thursday 25 October 12 16:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Has anyone experience of House of Commons publications? Can you explain the abbreviation ML used here?

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ry7/

The publication is dated 1900 but the couple concerned both died in 1852 and I have no idea what the reference is  about I (love Google snippets but it can be very frustrating). The columns are headed: Name, place and occupation/Year/Nature of record/Page
But it makes no sense to me  :(

As background info William Reckitt was a doctor in Lincolnshire, belonged to the Reckitt family who made Reckitt Blue, Coleman's mustard etc.
Anne M Seymour was daughter of George Seymour who lived in Bray, Wicklow. I think the family were shipowners and I am most interested in a possible son George who diversified into mining various stuff.

Thanks for any help.

Midlothian / Anyone going to the National Library of Scotland?
« on: Saturday 29 September 12 19:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi
If someone could spare a few minutes to request and look at a diary I would be super grateful.
The diary is from 1930 so shouldn't be too hard to read and I have the date nailed down so it shouldn't take long to do (possibly tempting fate there).
Please let me know if you can help  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Note on baptism record: completed
« on: Saturday 18 August 12 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi. Can anyone tell me what is the word in brackets below the name here?
This baptism is from 1835 but the girl had already been baptised at a different (but still C of E) church in 1820.
