Family History Beginners Board / Alfred James William Pocock.
« on: Friday 11 August 23 04:44 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching Alfred James William Pocock. b abt Oct 1899 and baptized on 13 Jan 1901 at Long Ditton, surrey U.K.
I have him on a passenger list for SS Paparoa departing England on 15 Oct 1912 and arriving in Melbourne 2 Dec 1912.
With him is his mother Ada.
He is listed as being 12 years of age.
I can't find an entry for his father Alfred Pocock 1864-1924.
I am only presuming this is the correct information for him as I haven't found him on any other passenger lists.
I know he also came to Australia.
They lived in Melbourne until the son Alfred joined the Australian Army in Feb 1917.
I would like to find out how and when the father arrived in Australia and any other information about Alfred J W Pocock.
Thankyou for any information.

Australia / Charles henry briggs.
« on: Saturday 11 September 21 10:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping to find out if I can confirm if Charles Henry Briggs was admitted to the Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children in Sydney Australia on 6 Aug 1866.
Charles b 16 Jun 1858 Towrang, New South Wales.
Married Louisa M Kennewell 5 Oct 1876.
Died 13 Jun 1929 North Sydney.
His father was William Briggs 1806-1858.
Mother Ann Smith 1829-1900.
William Briggs died when Charles was just 6 months old.
Charles was the seventh child, not all still living.
Ann next married George Brown in 1862 and their two children were born in 1865 and 1869.
The Asylum register states that Charles father was dead and his mother could not support him.  He was admitted at 8 and a half years old and apprenticed when 13 years. I can't decipher the actual date.
Is there a way to confirm that this is my ancestor?
Thank you for any help.

Devon / William Morrell. Devon.
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 01:40 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping for clarification on the marriage of William Morrell. He was born in Tiverton, Devon abt 1803.
Parents William Morrell 1780-  and Sarah Doble. They married 25 Dec 1800.
William Jnr either married Mary Pring in Silverton, Devon 18 Feb 1822 where he was listed as a labourer or Mary Pope on 15 Jun 1826 in Tiverton Devon where he was listed as a tailor.
In all census entries his occupation is Tailor.
I believe he died in 1892.
On the 1881 census he is a widower and I have a death entry for Mary Morrell for 1881.
I have marriage entries for both Mary Pope and Mary Pring.
Hoping someone can finally clear up the mystery.
Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / John Bate.
« on: Friday 09 February 18 03:30 GMT (UK)  »
Dorothy Bate born 1 Dec 1799 in Egloshayle Cornwell.  Died 23 Feb 1853 Egloshayle.
Married  Thomas R Curgenven in 1823. He was born 23 Oct 1789 St Kew, Cornwell. Died 1840 St Kew, Cornwell.
Son John born 1824 in Cornwell? and died in Melbourne Victoria in 1902.

How likely would it be that the son John would be called John Bate and not John Curgenven?

Thank-you for any help.

Family History Beginners Board / Thomas Forrester White.
« on: Monday 29 January 18 04:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have an entry for the birth of Thomas Forrester White from Scotlands People that says Posthumous son of Thomas White and Margaret Cockburn. Born May 20th and baptized June 2nd 1805.
Does this mean that he only lived a short while?
I can't find a death for him so far.
I would think that posthumous means still-born.
Thanks,  Sandie.

Scotland / Garwelfoot, Scotland.
« on: Monday 29 January 18 04:18 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping to find out some information about a place called Garwelfoot in Scotland. I have it listed as the birth place for at least two ancestors. The first in 1794 and the other a couple of years later.
I can't find it on a map and there's very little information about it online.
Many others in the same family were born and lived in West Linton so I presume it's somewhere close.

Peeblesshire / Margaret Cockburn
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 23:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping for any help with my ancestor Margaret Cockburn. She and Thomas White had the following children....
Agnes b 24 Apr 1794.
Elizabeth b 13 May 1796.
Margaret b 20 Sep 1798.
Christian b 13 May 1802-1843.
Thomas Forrester b 20 May 1805.
I have entries for all those births from Scotland, Select Births & Baptisms 1564-1950.
All births were at West Linton, Peebleshire.
Thomas White was born in 1779 and died abt 1805.
I have no birth, marriage or death certificates for Margaret and presume she would have been quite young when her first child was born as Thomas was only 15/16. Is that even likely?
Their child Christian was my g,g,grandmother and her son Alexander Cockburn Robertson was my great-grandfather.
I can find several births for Margaret but don't know which one if any, would be the correct one.
I found one for Archibald Cockburn and Christen Forrest having a Margaret Cockburn on 22 Oct 1780 and baptised in Athelstaneford, East Lothian. Perhaps "my" Christian was named for her grandmother.
How do I find BDM's for her?  Any suggestions will be very welcome.
Vicki.
