World War Two / Australian WW2 Patches and Ribbons
« on: Sunday 14 April 24 01:03 BST (UK)  »
This just appeared on my Facebook feed and I feel is too good not to share.

Are you familiar with the patches and ribbons used during World War II?

In ‘Australian Army Colour Patches & Ribbons of the Second World War’ you can learn about the meaning and significance of these items.

The Common Room / U3A family history course .
« on: Monday 06 December 21 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
I have been volunteered to run a genealogy/family history course next year for my local U3A.
I am aware that those attending will have different abilities and interests.  My general plan is to introduce them to places that they can get information for free.  I have already contacted the library to arrange for them to go there at times.
I am currently compiling a list of online sites they can access and am hoping that you would be kind enough to add your favourites.

Being Australian based I have found many different online sites they can access here but would love  some overseas sites that I can direct them to also.

I would also appreciate comments on any free or low cost family history programs you have come across.

Of course Rootschat is top of the list.

The Lighter Side / Queen Victoria’s funeral.
« on: Friday 26 April 19 12:49 BST (UK)  »
I have just made contact with a cousin through DNA who said that family legend says his great grandfather was a pall bearer at Queen Victoria funeral.
I know that at that stage, from his service records, that he was a sergeant and based in London.
Does anyone know if there were records kept of those who were involved in the parade?

Australia / Gladys May Wasley, Born 1914, South Australia
« on: Tuesday 29 January 19 06:04 GMT (UK)  »
I have found the birth of Gladys May Wasley, born to Emma Wasley, no father listed in Norwood district (South Australia) (951/67) in 1914 I cannot find anything else for her.

Can anyone work out what may have happened to her or suggest where to look for her?  I am wondering if she may have been adopted or fostered out and had her name changed.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / A DNA hypothetical
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 11:38 BST (UK)  »
According to Gedmatch G and R have a common ancestor 2.8 generations away.  They have 289.5cm DNA match.

My question is how close a match are they?
Given that there are different mothers could the father of R be the grandfather of G, ie could he be the biological father of G's father or would the link be further away?

A known example shows that E whose grandparents are G's great grandparents shares 239 cm across 14 segments (according to Ancestry, he is not on Gedmatch).

Are the measurements on Gedmatch different to those on Ancestry?

What are people's thoughts on this?

Australia / Cork family in South Australia, around Swan Reach
« on: Saturday 09 June 18 08:06 BST (UK)  »
Leonard Morris Cork is the son of Jeffrey Cork (1854-1892) and Janet Emily Young (1863-1943).
He married Amelia Potts nee Taylor in 1916. I have found these children: Albert Jeffrey Morris (1915), Ethel Victoria Daisy (1917), Amelia Janet (1919), Leonard Maurice (Morris) (1922) and William James Morris (1924).   There is also a Ruth or Dorothy born around 1929.  All registered as children of Leonard Cork and Amelia Taylor.

A news article in November 1941 following the death of William James Morris on HMAS Sydney states that he had three brothers.  Two in the RAAF (Leonard and Albert) and one serving in the Imperial Army in England.  I cannot find a fourth son.  Can anyone see a fourth son or could it be a husband of Amelia or Ethel.  Ethel had a child (Benny) in a memorial notice in 1942 and a possible husband called Fred.

Thanks for your time.

Canada / Emery Young born 1832
« on: Wednesday 30 May 18 12:44 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about Emery Young, believed born 29 Apr 1832 • Montague Lanark, Ontario, Canada.  His parents were Isaac Young (1809 - 1877).  Mother possibly Charlotte Unknown, believed to have died in mid 1830's when Isaac married an Elizabeth (Betsy) Dilabaugh (1811 - 1888).
In February 1856 he married Mary Anne Castle in South Australia.
I am hoping to find Emerys mother and when he arrived in Australia.  Someone thought he may have jumped ship.

Thanks for your help.  I have information on his children and life in Australia.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / 218-220 Woodcock St Kingston Upon Hull.
« on: Thursday 12 April 18 05:28 BST (UK)  »
I have my cousins, Horace Thomas Mabley Vincent, will which says that he had a house and shop at 218-220 Woodcock St Kingston Upon Hull when he died Jan. 1 1951, which he left to his wife, Maria Bertha Vincent.

Can anyone tell me what kind of shop it may have been.
Is there somewhere to look for further information?
He left the merchant navy in June 1949 so am presuming he bought it around that time.
Is it possible to find out what happened to the shop and Maria Bertha after his death?

Thank you for your help.
