Nottinghamshire / Why were they not married?!
« on: Monday 06 March 06 19:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My ancestors John Hall and Eliza Hall are on the 1861 census of Worksop, Notts as being married and living with her father John Thorn, with no kids, they were 21 and 20 years old. However on the 1871 census she is listed at the same address with her father as Eliza Thorn with 5 kids all surname Thorn, and no John Hall.

Then John Hall is back on the 1881 census and there are 2 extra kids. I got their marriage cert and found out they married in May 1873, but i cant figure out why they left it so long!

Out of the first five kids, the third and fifth were registered as Thorn's with the middle name Hall, but i cant find the registration details of the first, second and fourth. The sixth and seventh were registered as Hall's.

I know people were sometimes previously married, but they seemed too young to have been so in 1861. Eliza is listed as a domestic servant at that time, so i thought maybe she couldnt marry without losing her job, but then she had all the kids so she would have left anyway.

Anyway, is this making any sense to anyone?! Id appreciate any suggestions. John Hall came from Killamarsh in Derbys, so im looking to see if maybe he married there between the ages of 16 and 21, but im having no luck.

Thanks

Nottinghamshire / Lamb family, Treswell/West Markham
« on: Wednesday 15 February 06 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I noticed that on eBay a seller is selling a family bible, and thought id mention it as it would be great if someone on here has the family interest.

The seller is "papalazarou!" and he has it listed as "Antique family Bible 1810 name Lamb of Nottinghamshire", cost £25.00 with £9.00 postage. He says the name inside is John and Elizabeth Lamb of Truswell (Treswell) Notts. From his own research the seller says these two were married in nearby West Markham in 1810.

I hope someone has Lambs in Notts, i sure would love to find a long lost family bible from my lot!

The Common Room / Factory Inspectorate records, Kew
« on: Thursday 09 February 06 15:53 GMT (UK)  »
I know that one of HM Superintending Inspectors of Factories from Sheffield looked into the circumstances of my g-grandfather's death in Retford, Notts. in 1931.

Has anyone ever looked into the Factory Inspectorate records at Kew? I had a look on the National Archives website and it brought up 12 files in their catalogue, but i'm none the wiser what to look for!

I suspect this train of thought might lead to a visit to Kew, but id like to have an idea of which of these files to look into...  ;D

Thanks,

Mishka

Bedfordshire / John Whitfield
« on: Monday 06 February 06 02:30 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of a John Whitfield, born around 1829 in Norfolk, who became a wheelwright/carpenter and married a Harriet Box in 1850, then a Mary someone after Harriet died, and ended up living in Bedford? The only reason im asking, is because on the 1881 census, his wife Mary is listed as head of household at 24 Muswell Road in Bedford, and her profession as "Supported by husband, now at the Cape", then by 1891 she is a widow. But i cant find anywhere a record of his death, and im beginning to strongly suspect he was awkward and died in Africa! I would be grateful if anyone can offer any advice of areas to check into, or if anyone else has the same family. Cheers!

Nottinghamshire / Worksop Suicide
« on: Monday 06 February 06 02:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have an ancestor from Worksop, Notts, who according to her death certificate, in 1861,  "destroyed herself in a fit of temporary insanity"! Does anyone know if this actually means anything specific? On the parish records she is listed as having commited suicide, but ive had no luck with coroners records or local papers, so have no idea what the means and circumstances were. I would be grateful if anyone could offer any advice for further avenues of investigation...
