Anglesey / THOMAS 1885 from Llangefni, Anglesey - No trace of birth or parents
« on: Sunday 15 January 23 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello  :) If anyone can please give me any pointers with this, I'd be so grateful! I've gone round in circles again and again.

My great-grandfather was Owen Hugh THOMAS from Llangefni.

I've found a potential birth record for 1885 but it doesn't give me any other info and I can't find a baptism record for him. https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8912&h=54900919&tid=&pid=&queryId=aafa8a3cf4242b53130eb36a6e4124d4&usePUB=true&_phsrc=9f51796628&_phstart=successSource&_gl=1*imzkjm*_ga*NDU1NDE5NDQ4LjE2NjY3MjM3NDU.*_ga_4QT8FMEX30*MTY3Mzc4NTk5OC4xNS4xLjE2NzM4MTY5OTQuMS4wLjA.

The next record I can find for him is the 1891 census. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/988863:6897?ssrc=pt&tid=177541096&pid=422307935895 Not sure if the links will work?

Details below:

Ellen Thomas (Head) 59 Widow. b. Pwllheli
John H Thomas (Son) 28 Widower. Postman/Letter carrier. b. Llangefni
==> Owen Hugh Thomas (Nephew) 6 b. Llangefni

Confusingly though, Owen's marriage certificate in 1910 lists his father as being John Thomas, a postman.

By the 1901 census, Owen (aged 16) is living with Richard Thomas in West Derby (Liverpool) who is listed as being his brother. Richard appears to be one of Ellen's sons.

From looking at other census records, it looks like there were a great many branches of the Thomas family, with many of them all living around Church Street in Llangefni. The fact that Ellen was born in Pwllheli is helpful in pinpointing her in census records. However, I just can't tie Owen to a definite father or find any trace of his mother. I've looked for marriage records for John Thomas but drawn blanks.

I asked a relative who was Owen's granddaughter and she said he told her that his mother died when he was young, and his father remarried. He didn't get on with his stepmother so lived away from them. I'd assumed it referred to him living with his aunt aged 6 but I'm wondering if Owen was actually the grandson (not nephew) of Ellen and if he was referring instead to moving to Liverpool with his "brother".

I wondered if Owen is either John's son and Ellen's grandson, or if he's an illegitimate child of one of Ellen's daughters. I haven't looked at their ages/circumstances around the time of his birth yet.

My hunch is John as his father but I just can't any trace of baptisms, marriages (1st to Owen's mother, or 2nd to the step mother) or any death record for Owen's unknown mother.

Any help would be gratefully received  ??? :)

Occupation Interests / What is a foreign warden?
« on: Monday 05 September 16 23:22 BST (UK)  »
Two of my ancestors were Foreign Wardens in the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers. Does anyone know please - what is/was a foreign warden? Does it imply that they were themselves foreign? I'm trying to find my Huguenot links so I'm hoping it might be helpful :) Thanks.

London and Middlesex / Looking for map with house numbers, Lambeth
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 13:02 BST (UK)  »
It's a long shot I know but i'm hoping to find a street map of Lambeth showing the house numbers. I've looked at dozens but none show them. I'm looking specifically for the location of 51/50 Fore Street (also listed as Upper Fore Street) which was demolished in the early 1860s to make way for the Albert Embankment.

Any ideas welcome :)

"Containing over 64,000 names of people known to have migrated to England during the period of the Hundred Years’ War and the Black Death, the Wars of the Roses and the Reformation."

It's a really interesting searchable database. I don't know how complete it is but may be of use to someone out there :-)

London and Middlesex / Completely stumped after 14 years of searching!
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 23:32 BST (UK)  »
Well, I hate to say it but I almost feel like admitting defeat on one branch of my family tree! I've been searching for some info about the same man for 14 years now with no luck! As a last ditch attempt, please could someone help me if you can?

My ancestor seemingly popped out of thin air at his wedding in 1740 and no amount of searching seems to churn anything up about his parents or siblings, or even his death. What can I do? I've tried every approach I can think of.

Here's what I know about him:

Name: James DALTREY

Birth: Circa 1715/1716 (A distant relative located a request for marriage licence which I haven't seen. It gave his age as 25 on 31.12.1741 which gives a birth year of 1715/1716)

Occupation: Listed on a record as being a tobacconist

He married Lydia King Jan 1st 1742 (it's listed as being 1741 but that seems to be wrong as the dates on the original page are jumbled) and he is listed as being a widower. I found an earlier record which looks like it matches with him and it shows a marriage to Mary Lewis Jan 22nd 1740. This is the first mention I can find of James anywhere! Birth records for him simply don't seem to exist!

He seems to move around London a bit in the 15 years I can trace of his life. Here are the details:

Jan 22 1740 - St Bartholomew the Great Marriage to Mary Lewis (This is the first trace of him)
Oct 7 1741 - St Saviour, Southwark - Mary's burial and their son's burial is around the same time so presumably they died together in childbirth?

Jan 1 1742 - St Martin, Ludgate - Marriage to Lydia King

Jan 13 1744 St Bartholomew the Great - Birth of Mary Hannah
Feb 14 1747 St Botolph Bishopsgate - Birth of James (this is who my line descends from)
Jun 08 1750 St Sepulchre - Birth of Lydia (Written on the record as living at Old Bailey?)
Dec 15 1755 St Sepulchre - Birth of Ann

Any help anyone could give me would be very gratefully received and might even help me to stop tearing my hair out!  :D

London and Middlesex / Brick wall - Daltrey in London
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 22:39 BST (UK)  »
I've been researching my family tree and have been at a brick wall for years now. If anyone could please give me any info, pointers or leads, I'd be very thankful.

The surname I'm looking for is DALTREY and they are a line of ivory/bone carvers and fan makers from around Bow/Shoreditch area of London.

I've got back to James Daltrey who was christened in 1747 in Bishopsgate, London. His father is listed as James Daltrey and his mother as Lydia King. It's there that I get completely stuck as I can't find any birth record for the older James Daltrey. I have James down as being born in 1700 but don't know where that date actually came from.

I've found James' and Lydia's marriage record which says:

"James Daltry Widower and Lydia King Spinster, both of the parish of St. Saviour, Southwark, were married by license" On the record, it looks like it's listed as 1741 but I believe it may be 1742 instead. Also, although the record itself says "St. Saviour, the text lists it as being St. Martin, Ludgate.

I've found a possible match for James' first wife: Mary Lewis who he (presumably) married on 22nd January 1740 in the parish og St Bartholomew the Great. By October 1741, Mary has died in childbirth and also, their baby, William. This would then fit in with James marrying Lydia in 1742.

This is the earliest trace of James I can find and I'm stumped. I've found a family he would fit well with but can't link him to it. William and Jane who lived around the St Martin Vintry area for many years and had several children born a few years either side of 1700. I just can't find that link though!

One other possibility I've seen on other peoples' linked trees is James' father being listed as John Daltrey/Daultree b 14 May 1665 Dunnington Near York, Yorkshire and a few generations back from him. I've also seen James listed as having died 1755 Pontefract, St. Giles, Yorkshire. Is there any way I can find out if this is likely to be true? At the moment, I've seen no concrete evidence of him having lived anywhere outside of London :-/

My grandad always said we were Huguenots who came over from France and I think that, ultimately, we go back to the D'Hauterive (also called De Alta Ripa) family but I just can't find links to them, or even to the Huguenots.

Any help, advice or leads would be very welcome .. thank you :-)
