World War Two / ARP 'R' London (Camberwell?) photo
« on: Wednesday 05 July 17 12:09 BST (UK)  »
Is anybody able to describe for me what is in this photograph?

They all have 'R London' badges and ARP badges on their uniforms, and I assume 'rwell' on one of the vehicles is Camberwell. So my assumption is that the 'R' region of London designated the borough of Camberwell and that all these men were in the ARP for that region. Perhaps Light 59/60, Light 61/62 etc are the vehicles?. If anyone is able to clarify I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Is anybody able to decide if these photos are of the same man or not?

Both are photographed with my Great Grandad F.G.M. Scales in 1937, but I'm not sure if they are the same person since one photo is in profile... all opinions welcome!

Thanks

Dublin / Leinster House - 1890s staff records
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 08:13 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody know if any records survive that would list the staff of Leinster House in the 1890s?

My ancestor Edward Malone may have worked there as a Groom from around 1890-1895, but I haven't found a way to verify this. By that point the building was owned by the Royal Dublin Society, and had wings for the National Library of Ireland, National Museum of Ireland, and Natural History Museum so I guess records might also be with them (or even potentially with the records of the Oireachtas though their records would presumably be post-1922).

Any help or advice appreciated.

Many thanks
Chris

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Charabanc to date
« on: Sunday 05 June 16 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Is anybody able to give a rough estimate for this photo based on fashions?

It is of a charabanc owned by a firm based in Peckham, so my initial guess says 1910s/1920s based on the vehicle (although I know the firm still had charabancs in the late 20s, possibly early 30s), and the fashions look mid 20s ish to me, but I'd be interested to get a more informed opinion.

Thanks

I am trying to date the attached photo postcard. It is supposedly of my grandad's uncle John Branagan (1875-1940) who was a Farrier and lived in Dublin, Ireland but it seems it can't be him - see the following post for more info on that: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=730785.new#new

The stamp indicates it was taken at the Hole In The Wall studio near the Cameronia Cinema in Fayed, Egypt, and it is a Gevaert postcard photo. Shaun J has said he thinks it is 1920s or 30s, and Ken has said c1930s, and Joe has said the clothing is identical to some he had in 1947.

Any other dating opinions based on style of postcard or clothing etc would be really helpful, I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board to try and figure out who he is given that he isn't the John my family thought he was...

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Fayed (Egypt?) British army? c1899
« on: Monday 14 September 15 22:24 BST (UK)  »
The attached postcard is the only photo we have of my grandad's uncle John Branagan. He was born in 1875 in Dublin, Ireland and as far as we know he worked all his life as a Farrier like his father before him. I assume the photo was taken in the 1890s as it is addressed to his mother who died in December 1899, and he looks in his mid-twenties to me so I would guess late 1890s.

It is a generic Gevaert postcard but the studio has stamped its location on the back. It is a little hard to pick out every letter, but I think it says: 'STUDIO / HOLE IN THE WALL / Near Cameronie / Cinéma    Fayed'.

The only guess I've come up with so far is the town Fayed or Fayid, in Egypt. On the 1901 census John was living at home working as a Farrier, and the same in 1911, and he was still one when he died in 1940. I have found no record of him on the findmypast army / Boer war records for that time, but I am wondering - is it possible he was in Fayed, Egypt with the British Army or similar for some reason? I can't think of any other explanation for him apparently being there. But neither have I been able to find any links for the army being in Egypt at that time, despite references to the British Army being elsewhere in Africa during the Boer war. Also the note to his mother is very short and un-illuminating, which I would think accords with it being sent in an army context.

But I may be totally wrong with my interpretation of the studio stamp - so all suggestions would be most welcome.

Many thanks
Chris

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Postcard back castle logo
« on: Saturday 18 July 15 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi, has anyone seen this logo on a real photo postcard reverse before? It appears to be a castle or similar, I'm intrigued to know if it might help me narrow down a date for a postcard I have.

The postcard I have was probably made in Yarmouth, Norfolk area and was sent c1942-1946.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place name Ireland
« on: Tuesday 02 June 15 10:45 BST (UK)  »
Is anybody able to read the place name here? It is from the Drumcondra petty sessions and says Edward Malone of Ballymore was charged with "His ass wandering on the public road at ? on 22nd October 1878".

Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo to date, Edward Wright
« on: Saturday 02 May 15 12:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi, is anybody able to give me a ballpark date for this photo - it's an unusual type I haven't come across before, perhaps some kind of small contact print? The paper it's printed on is very thin card and pliable. Any photographic-history buffs out there...

I can guess from his appearance roughly when it would be age-wise, but interested to know if the type of print says something about the date. And also an idea of what sort of camera/film it might have been taken on would be useful.

Many thanks
Chris
