Nottinghamshire / George Everill
« on: Saturday 19 October 19 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Hiya Rootchat! I have a big challenge for you.

So, my 4x Great Grandfather was called George Everill however after 1882, I have seemingly lost track of him. He was born illegitimately as George Everard Bennett as he was born before his parents married. Then his name ended up being George Everard Everill. His dad died soon after and his mother remarried by 1871.

George than for some reason came down to Bingham, Nottinghamshire and met and married who would become my 4 Great Grandmother Rebecca Smalley. They lived in Bingham until roughly 1882 where they moved to Nottingham and then after that he disappeared. He isn't on the census with his family from 1891 onwards. Rebecca still marked her marital status as Married until 1939 until she became Widow.

He was involved in criminal activities being arrested both in 1880 and 1882 and serving a combined sentence of 20 months in Nottingham Prison.

If anyone can find him on 1891, 1901 or 1911 census or when he died I would be most grateful! For easier viewing I shall summarize in bullet points what I know about him below.

Thank you!

  • Born Jan 1853 in Birmingham, Warwickshire to George Everill and Elizabeth Bennett
  • Full name at Birth was George William Everard Bennett.
  • Married Rebecca Smalley at St Mary and All Saints Church in Bingham, Notts in 1878
  • Worked as a Labourer / Gardener until 1881 where he became a Commission Agent
  • During his known criminal years (circa 1880) he went by the alias of George Moscow and George Lancaster
  • Was sentenced for a term of 8 months in Nottingham Prison in 1880 for Larceny and then again for 12 months in 1882.
  • Had four Children, Mary Elizabeth (1880) Harry Bentley Everill (1882) Jessie Isabelle (1884) and Frank Herbert (1886)

« on: Thursday 21 February 19 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hiya Rootchat,

I need some help. I'm looking at a 1939 register and theres a note on the 2nd half of the page. I have no idea what it could possibly be. Then there's another one directly under him for his brother which I have no idea what these mean. Of course I can only see part of what these notes are but I was hoping some of you may be able to give some insight?

I have no idea if the file upload will work so i shall do a bit of scribbling here.

« on: Monday 11 September 17 08:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi, RootsChat.

Today, I'm interested in what online genealogy courses you take to get your Genealogy Qualification(s).

  • Which course did you take?
  • What did you think of your chosen course?
  • Any regrets you have from taking the said course?

Quite intrigued to find out what people have to say!

Thank you

Katie

The Common Room / Working as a Genealogist
« on: Saturday 15 July 17 09:45 BST (UK)  »
Hey RootsChat,

Today I want to ask a quite serious question and please respond back honestly. Since March of this year I have started my own Family Tree Business. This is something I am very passionate in and enjoy and in all honest I'm not good at anything else!

I've put all my effort possible into this, doing what anyone would starting any business. Created a website, social media pages, bought advertising. I have commited to this 100% and before I started doing it (when it was just in the works) I had everyone's support. However, since actually taking it live and spending my own money on it (which honestly I don't have much to my name anyway) people have decided to switch their views on it and told me that it is not worth it. Being a Genealogist is a thing of the past. This has made me semi kick myself because I got motivated to start doing this from the words of the same people that are no demotivating me.

Since May I have had 3 customers so far and since everyone on here has had experience with building their own or other people's family tree's I'd like to know your opinion on this. Have I wasted my time and lost money that I simply can't regain? or do you think this is something that I should stick with.

Thank you.

England / [Request] 1939 Register Look up (Just need to double check)
« on: Wednesday 07 June 17 08:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello RootsChat.

I'd love if someone can look up a specific 1939 Register for me just to double check something.

I'm looking up a couple named Percy M Rice and Elizabeth E Crossland. They are living with their daughter Hilda Annie Rice in 1939. Hilda later becomes a Gibson.

On the Register its been transcribed to say Percy's name is actually Percy E Rice born in 1874 and Elizabeth, although no name errors born in 1892. I understand large age differences happen but I'd like a double check as I can't find an Elizabeth E born in 1892 or any Elizabeth to match mine in the slightly.

Hopefully just a double check doesn't break any rules.

Thanks!

World War Two / Royal Navy Coastal Forces
« on: Thursday 11 May 17 08:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I was hoping someone could land me some tips as I have never searched for Royal Navy records before.

I'm looking for a man named Sidney Davis and all I know about him is that he served in the Coastal Forces during World War 2. He was from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, then would have been West Riding of Yorkshire.

I've done a fair bit of googling, ready up on the Coastal Forces history a bit but apart from that I've made no progress so i'm hoping someone has some tips and tricks somewhere!

Thank you!

Katie

Scotland / Alexander Heron Born 1887 StoneyKirk, Wigtown
« on: Monday 08 May 17 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi RootsChat... again  ;D

I've finally finished Isabella Heron's side with much success but her husband is quite the opposite. I have Isabella and Alexanders marriage certificate. They got married in December and he was age 24. I also have him on the 1911 census (recorded in April) and he is 23.

So it is safe to say that 1887 is an appropiate assumption for his birth year. On the census it also stated his birthplace as StoneyKirk, Wigtown and lastly on his marriage certificate it was listed his mother being Maggie. There was no father listed and his mother was in work as a farm servant but i cant find her on census.

Hope people can help me find him!

Thanks!!

Scotland / Isabella Heron born 1924 in New Cumnock
« on: Friday 05 May 17 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi RootsChat.

I'm pretty new to Scottish Ancestry and so far I've seen quite a fair few differences between searching Scotland Ancestry and England Ancestry so I'm hoping some people can help here.

I'm looking up a woman by the name of Isabella Heron born 1924 in New Cumnock. I don't know what her parents are called so I have no idea how to take a generation back from this and as I'm sure you all know the Birth Registrations on the Scottish gro don't list Mothers Maiden names which... actually surprised me.

I looked up a male Heron marrying before 1924 and 2 have caught my eye. One in Old Cumnock and one in New Cumnock. I don't know anything about Scottish Geography so I don't know where places in Scotland are without using a map.

I was wondering if people knew any pretty good websites to help me or at least their input on this matter.

Thanks a bunch!
