Midlothian / MELDRUM, Leith
« on: Tuesday 24 August 21 14:03 BST (UK)  »
Having found a burial for Robert Meldrum in 1795 in Leith South I am wondering what the reference to the “ground” is in each entry?

It gives a very exact position i.e. 2 yards West of the S.W. Corner of McHoven’s (spelling?) ground. Each entry shows the same detail in referring to a “ground”. Is it referring to another persons grave?

Robert died age 75, after marrying Isobel Russel in 1767. Their child John was baptized in 1781, after being born in 1768 - any idea why they would have waited so long to baptize him? There is a note on the entry stating his birth date.

Thanks, Linda

Canada Lookup Request / Prince Albert records
« on: Tuesday 10 August 21 21:12 BST (UK)  »

I’m looking for any reference to Roderick Dean(s), wife Marion and son James who emigrated to Prince Albert, from Scotland in 1911/12. Roderick was a blacksmith, born 1860, Marion born 1866 and James 1887.

At some point James came to Ontario, where he stayed. He was a pharmacist. He married Gertrude Hemsley.

Thank you, Linda

Armed Forces / Identifying a photo

Can anyone help me with the attached - it was in my dads things, but I don’t think he’s on there. One suggestion was the Home Guard.
Dad joined the Durham Light Infantry in 1922, transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers, and eventually ended up at the Small Arms School in Hythe, before leaving the army in the early fifties.

Any idea on the uniform, era?

Thanks, Linda

Armed Forces / Army 1920’s, Ireland and Germany
« on: Friday 05 March 21 23:56 GMT (UK)  »
My dad joined the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1922, age 18, and in 1923 was posted with the 1st Battalion to Cologne, Germany, where he stayed for 15 months. In October 1924 he was then posted to Ballykinlar, Ireland for 4 years.

Questions - what would they have done in Germany at that time, and more importantly to me, Ireland?  I understand Ballykinlar was an internment camp for Irish prisoners, but that only seemed to be until 1921. My dad told my brother he saw things in Ireland he wished he’d never seen?

Anyone with knowledge of that era and the Army’s role in these areas?

Thank you, Linda

I’m looking for a marriage in Petham in the June quarter between George Cheeseman and Lucy Sargeant.  This info taken from Free BMD, but if anyone has access to the original that would be great. Need to determine if Lucy’s second name begins with an O or a C!

Many thanks, Linda
