The Common Room / John Williams Burgess & George Williams Burgess
« on: Monday 18 December 23 08:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find birth details for two people that is causing some difficulties.

I have John Williams Burgess, b.~1862, from census records places of birth include: Ruabon (1901 & 1911), Wolstanton (1921) and Denbighshire (1891).

He lists his father as George Williams Burgess (brickmaker): deceased on his 1890 marriage certificate, he married Mary Dirkin (Ireland) in Chester, Cheshire.

I can't find John Williams Burgess before the 1891 census and I can't find George Williams Burgess at all.

Given the eclectic places of birth listed for John Williams Burgess, I am beginning to think he actually had no idea where he was born or what his father's real name was - with the 'Williams' being added in at some stage in his young adult life.

Hi all,

Looking for a 1911 and possibly 1901 look-up for Alice Walters (unknown DOB), with her daughter Alice Maud Walters (b.1903). In the Reading (Berkshire) area...

Many thanks
Mark

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has some knowledge of DNA cM scores and a deeper understanding of the nuances of a family tree! Which is steadily making me go insane.

Attached is a beautiful diagram that highlights my recent DNA results. Where a match has been found, I have mapped this to the same extended family (from Arkansas in the good old US no less) and attempted to ascertain my possible position in this map.

So, looking at the diagram, are the five gentleman that are labelled '?' possible grandparents to me? Or have I totally lost it?

The Common Room / A right old mystery...
« on: Thursday 27 August 15 08:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm stuck on a person in my tree. Here are the details:

Thomas Seaville Truss

b. 1832
Chester, Cheshire, England

Marriage to Annie Elizabeth Marsh (b. 1835, d. 1908)
1860 Apr Age: 28
Darlington, Durham

Residence (with Annie)
1861 Age: 29
West Ham, Essex, England
Relation to Head of House: Head

Residence (with Annie)
1871 Age: 39
Camberwell, Surrey, England

Death
1895 Age: 63
St Olave Southwark, London (Annie is listed as a widow on the 1901 census)

His occupation was mechanical designer (boilers etc.).

The thing is, I have found an entry for a Thomas Truss b.1831, Chester (which matches), occupation as mechanical designer, details here:

Name:    Thomas Truss
Age:    60
Estimated birth year:    abt 1831
Relation:    Head
Spouse's Name:    Susannah W Truss
Gender:    Male
Where born:    Chester
Civil Parish:    West Ham
Ecclesiastical parish:    St Mark
Town:    Forest Gate
County/Island:    Essex
Country:    England

Registration district:    West Ham
Sub registration district:    West Ham
ED, institution, or vessel:    79
Piece:    1335
Folio:    6
Page Number:    5
Household Members:

Name    Age
Thomas Truss    60
Susannah W Truss    44
Duke F T Truss    10
Wm H Truss    7
Grace S Truss    7
Maud B Truss    3

I also can't locate him on the 1881 census, his wife at the time (Annie) is with her father, two children and is listed as married. So, he could of divorced/separated from Annie (the 10 year old child would back this up) and re-married Susannah any time after 1871, but no record of a marriage between a Thomas Truss and Susannah W. I have a possible death for Susannah at 1893 (Billericay, Essex).

Not sure where else to look for a possible marriage between Thomas and Susannah...(and I can't find a Susannah W (b.1847, Glamorganshire) on any other census....

The Common Room / French Marriage Records 1914-1919
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
My question is this, has anyone ever managed to track down the marriage of a British Serviceman to a French or Belgian civilian in either France or Belgium during this time period?

If so, how on earth did you manage it?  :P

Warwickshire / The mysterious Joly!
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 12:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William Earnest Reading b.1919, Foleshill, Warwickshire.

His birth certificate states his father was John William Reading and his mother Sophy Joly. He had two sisters, there baptisms state the mother as Sophy Jolly and the variant Sophie Jolly, she was born in 1877, and died in 1926 aged 49. Her address at time of death was 41 Meadway, Stoke Heath, Coventry.

So, I have tried locating the marriage of Sophy and John - to no avail.

I have searched for John William Reading marrying any Sophie and then cross referenced - no joy there either.

I am totally out of ideas....any advice would be really appreciated. Given the spelling of the name, I think it's a possibility they were married in France at the end of the war, did this happen often? Their first child was born in 1919.

Thank you  ;D

Q. If someone transferred from the Milita into the Regulars (circa 1895) would they be given a new regimental number?

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Lookup at the Herbert?

Is it free to browse electoral rolls at the Herbert? The website mentions a price, but not sure if these allude to copies of data rather than just access?

Warwickshire / Sophy Joly & John William Reading
« on: Monday 16 September 13 22:16 BST (UK)  »
New to the site, but have noticed already how much knowledge there is on here....so hoping for some pointers please.

I have a William Earnest Reading b.1919, Foleshill, Warwickshire. His birth certificate states his father was John William Reading and his mother Sophy Joly. He had two sisters, there baptisms state the mother as Sophy Jolly and Sophie Jolly.

So, I have tried locating the marriage of Sophy and John - to no avail. I have searched:

LDS Family Search, Ancestry, Parish Records for Warwickshire, Belgian archives and French archives (don't seem to go past 1910 in most cases). I even stumbled on a research paper that highlighted the finding of an archive at the NA that had been filed incorrectly, which contained details of 1000+ marriages by British Serviceman to French and Belgian women, I have emailed the lead researcher but yet to receive a reply. Not sure if  this was (is) RG34.

I have searched for John William Reading marrying any Sophie and then cross referenced - no joy there either.

I am totally out of ideas....any advice would be really appreciated.

Thank you

Mark
