Tipperary / O'MEARA, Michael & DANE/DEAN, Margaret - missing marriage
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 01:43 BST (UK)  »
Good morning

I have a missing marriage for a couple of my forebears from Tipperary, and having received lots of great help from this forum previously, I thought I would try my luck.

My great-great-grandfather's New Zealand death certificate gives the following information regarding his parents:

Michael O'MEARA
Margaret O'MEARA (nee DEAN)

He was also married in NZ but at that time marriage certs did not record parents.
My Dad's cousin did some research into church records some years back and found these baptism records for the Roman Catholic church in Toomevara, Tipperary:

Daniel 08.07.1850 (my g-g)
Parents: Michael O'Meara, Margaret Dane
Residence: Ollatrim
Sponsors: Patt Meara, Anne Dane

Patt 16.04.1852
Parents: Michael O'Meara, Margaret (surname not recorded)
Residence: Not recorded
Sponsors: Daniel Tierney, May (surname not recorded)

Margaret 07.07.1854
Parents: Michael O'Meara, Margaret (surname illegible)
Residence: Ollatrim
Sponsors: Patt Cleary, Honora Nolan

Daniel & Margaret are both confirmed as siblings since they both migrated to NZ and married here and their descendants are known to each other.

Does anyone have access to these records that could source a marriage for Michael & Margaret O'Meara please?

Many thanks
Nick

Donegal / ORR family of Raphoe, Co. Donegal
« on: Tuesday 04 August 15 23:33 BST (UK)  »
Greetings from New Zealand

I am trying to find more information regarding my great-great-grandmother, and wondered if anyone has the ability to search Presbyterian baptism records for Donegal. She is:

Sarah Maria ORR b. c.1844-1848
Married William HOLMES, 24 Dec 1868, Raphoe.
Emigrated to New Zealand in 1873, husband died accidentally 11 Mar 1885.
Married Robert WATSON, 19 Oct 1886, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Death registered under Sarah Maria WATSON, 24 Jul 1922, Christchurch, New Zealand.

First marriage cert names her father as James ORR.
Second marriage cert names her father as Joseph ORR.
Death cert names her father as James ORR, mother Elizabeth ORR formerly HARPER.

I would very much like to know any information regarding siblings and event dates.

Many thanks
Nick

Hi all

It's been suggested to me to request a lookup for an Intention to Marry notice for my forbears, as I have been having difficulty tracing the parents of one of my forbears who came to NZ from Melbourne.

(As per my post here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=667327.msg5124570#msg5124570)

Details of marriage:

Groom: William Harry SIMPSON
Bride: Harriett Ann TALLOTT
Date of marriage: 6 Jul 1874

At this point, NZ marriage certificates did not record names of parents. A relative of mine did find a newspaper notice that named the groom as son of W.A. Simpson of Melbourne, but that's all I have. Trying to search Australian records has proven difficult, and so it was suggested that the ITM may have some information.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards
Nik

Europe / Germany : SCHAFFHAUSEN, possible government official
« on: Friday 08 November 13 09:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Bit of a long shot here. I am wondering if anyone has access to records for German people working in Western Samoa between 1899 - 1914, or if anyone knows where I can locate such records.

The surname of the man I wish to locate is SCHAFFHAUSEN. I do not know his first name, although I can guess. In Samoa, surnames did not pass on as per Western Culture, but a child would usually take his father's first name as his surname (this meant the surname changed each generation).

Mr Schaffhausen fathered a child named Aupauu SIONE (I have no idea whether there was a marriage or not). It is important to note that in several Polynesian cultures, Sione is a transliteration of the christian name John. So it is within the realms of possibility that Mr Schaffhausen's first name was Johann.

I do not have any other information about this man other than his surname and the name of his son, hence my question about records of Germans in Samoa. Not sure where else to start!

Thanks

Australia / ORIGINS: William Harry (Billy) SIMPSON, c.1848-1902
« on: Friday 08 November 13 00:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I have traced my family tree back to the SIMPSON family in Melbourne, Australia, but I would like to know where they came from before that. This gentleman is my great-great grandfather:

William Harry SIMPSON
Born: About 1848, Melbourne, VIC
Married: 6 Jul 1874, Christchurch, New Zealand to Harriett Ann TALLOTT
Died: 26 Oct 1902, View Hill, Oxford, Canterbury, New Zealand

He was a jockey and rode in the first ever Melbourne Cup in 1861, coming second on a horse called Mormon. He was known as Billy or Bill Simpson in the articles I read, none of which referred to his family, frustratingly.

The only other information I have is from his engagement notice in a Christchurch newspaper, which referred to him as the son of W.A. Simpson, Melbourne.

His children, all born in NZ:

Walter Herbert
Miriam Louisa
Annie Harriet
Lydia Alice
Eliza Jane
Harry Andrew
Ada Ellen (my great-grandmother)
Olive Edith Mary
Gertrude Eva Emily
Charles Edward
Effie Mary

I found a Baptism in Melbourne from Jan 1849, for William SIMPSON (no Harry), but the parents were John and Jane, which doesn't correspond to the newspaper article re his engagement.

Any assistance appreciated.

Galway / BURKE, Thomas & FRANCIS, Sabina - missing marriage
« on: Tuesday 05 November 13 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning

I am searching for a marriage record for my great-great grandparents which has proved elusive for some years now. Perhaps someone here can assist. Details I have:

Groom:
Thomas BURKE
Born: 26 Apr 1841, Kirbrown (Carabrown?), Galway, Ireland
Died: 20 May 1906, Milton, Otago, New Zealand
Son of John BURKE and Mary, nee CONNOR

Bride:
Sabina FRANCIS
Born: about 1849, Barrandooley, Galway, Ireland
Died: 20 Jan 1882, Helensbrook, Tokomairiro, Otago, New Zealand
Daughter of Michael FRANCIS and Bridget, nee WELSH

Their children, all born in NZ:
Michael
John
Thomas
William
Bridget (twin)
Tobias (twin)
Patrick

Bridget's birth certificate (10/10/1877) shows Thomas and Sabina as married at Castlegar on 24/11/1869.
Patrick's birth certificate (30/10/1879) shows Thomas and Sabina as married at Castlegar on 28/10/1869.

I wrote to the registrar general in Dublin in 1997 and paid the requisite fee for a search. They searched under BURKE and BOURKE and found nothing for 1868 to 1870 inclusive.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Northumberland / Thomas ARMSTRONG & Mary/Ann HUDSON, Newcastle
« on: Friday 01 November 13 03:14 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings

I am trying to trace further ancestors and/or family members for my great-grandfather, Nicholas Hudson ARMSTRONG.

Nicholas' birth certificate gives these details, (it is hard to read so I may be in error):

Date of birth: 22 Feb 1873
Place: Heaton, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
Father: Thomas ARMSTRONG
Mother: Mary ARMSTRONG formerly HUDSON

However, when searching for his parents' marriage I find these details:

Thomas ARMSTRONG
Ann HUDSON
GRO Vol 10b, Page 38, Dec 1865, Newcastle T.

The 1881 Census also refers to Ann, widowed by this time, plus further info:

Ann ARMSTRONG, Head, W, 46, F, Laundress (Ws)
John ARMSTRONG, Son, 10, M, Scholar
Nicholas ARMSTRONG, Son, 7, M, Scholar
John HUDSON, Head, W, 53, M, Clerk Iron Wo+

It appears Ann had her widowed brother living near or next to them.

I would like to know more about Thomas and Mary/Ann, but not sure where to go from here.

Many thanks

Donegal / Holmes Family of County Donegal, Ireland
« on: Tuesday 22 October 13 03:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Having had some wonderful assistance from this forum in solving a 15-year mystery in my mother's family tree, perhaps someone may be able to assist with my father's side of the family. I have traced my ancestry back to my great-great grandparents who migrated from Ireland to New Zealand in 1873:

William HOLMES, born 24 April 1843, Raphoe, County Donegal
Sarah Maria ORR, born c. 1847, County Donegal
They were married on 24 Dec 1868 in Taughboyne, County Donegal.

William had a sister named Catherine, born 4 Sep 1845, Raphoe. Their father's name was Andrew.

William and Sarah had 5 children, two of whom were born in Ireland:

Andrew b. 1870
Mary Jane b. 1872

I would be very grateful to know if anyone has any connection to this family.

Many thanks
Nik

Family History Beginners Board / PLANT: dead end/brick wall
« on: Friday 11 October 13 02:21 BST (UK)  »
Greetings all

After 15+ years of research, I am no nearer to tracking down parents for my great-grandfather,  Arthur PLANT, who reportedly was an orphan. So I'm putting this out there to anyone who may know of a connection. I have lots of related information, but I cannot establish who his parents were.

The reports are that he was an orphan, one of 6 boys, raised by Dr Barnardos home in London.
The brothers were all encouraged to learn trades. One brother, Walter, became a tailor, and another whose name I don't know was in the Navy. However, I wrote to Barnardo's in 1997 and they could find no records. I also utilised Barnardos' online Family History service this year (2013) and again they could not find any records.

Arthur PLANT was born c. 1880 (in Warwick, according to the 1901 Census). He died in Kent, on 22 Jan 1967. He married Jane BEACH on 28 Aug 1904. According to his marriage certificate, his father's name was Edwin PLANT (occupation: Deceased!)

Arthur and Jane's children:

Arthur Edwin (b. 1908)
Albert F (b. 1911)
Elsie G (b. 1912)
Doris K
Frank Walter (b. 25 May 1917, d. 1 Feb 2004 in New Zealand)
Constance F (b. 1920)
Winifred M (twin, b. 2 Jun 1924, d. 26 Feb 2011 in Australia)
Hilda K (twin, b. 2 Jun 1924)

As Arthur PLANT is a fairly common name, I have not had success yet in ordering a correct birth certificate. In checking the census records I find families that *could* be Arthur's, but cannot make a solid connection with the information thus far.

If you think you can help and/or have any questions for me, please post a reply.

Kind regards
Nick
