London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Housing in Stepney's Limehouse Fields in 1935
« on: Saturday 15 February 14 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
Found this (see link) when searching 'net for something else (why is it that you stumble across little gems like this, but if you look for them you can never find them lol). The one thing that comes across in this is the need for better housing at the time and although people sometimes have a moan about their standard of living conditions these days they should look back and see just what some of their forebears had to put up with.

Armed Forces / Australian escapees from the Japanese honoured.
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 12:49 BST (UK)  »
The link below may be of interest to those who had relations held captive by the Japanese. Very few managed to escape and for those that did and who were recaptured there was only one end to their fate.

Australia Lookups completed / tracing ten pound poms
« on: Tuesday 22 September 09 10:44 BST (UK)  »
Can any one help  in directing me in my quest to find out what happened to some rellies who took up the offer of the assisted passage migration scheme during the 50's and early 60's at all? I have the names and dates for their departure in the UK and for their arrival in Australia and have seen the entries for them on the National Archives of Australia site for their entry into Australia but that is as far as I can get.

Is there anyway that I can further my reseach at all, remembering that I have no idea where one party settled (or returned) and the other person that I am looking for was last heard of in the 1980's working somewhere (possibly a place called Punchbowl near Sydney) in NSW.

A big ask (as my teenager would say) I know, but any help would be appreciated.......thanks

Essex Resources & Offers / Offer: Noak Hill near Romford resource
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 07:43 BST (UK)  »
I deal with the history of Noak Hill near Romford and have a data base of those that lived and worked in the area.

Date periods vary as per family, some go back to 1800, but in general I cover;

Burials at St Thomas' Chapel of Ease at Noak Hill from 1844 to 1920.

Marriages at St Thomas' Chapel of Ease at Noak Hill from 1898 when the church was first granted a license for performing marriage ceremonies which prior to this date were held at St Edward's Romford, St John's Havering atte Bower or at St Peter's South Weald.

Other records that I have and can use are poor rate entries for the Noak Hill area from 1840, School records for the village school from 1878 and certain farm records for the area dating from 1795.

Some of the families on the data base have been researched and have details that cover birth/ education/ marriage/ employment/ military service/ and death and burial details whilst some have only a small amount of detail and have yet to be researched. I can also, at times and where possible, provide a photograph of the burial plot/headstone for those that are buried in the local churchyard.

My own data base that I have compiled is not to be found on any internet site so if anyone is researching rellies that came from the Noak Hill area let me know and I will look to see if I have the name covered.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / How to date fashions with Doris
« on: Tuesday 07 October 08 07:53 BST (UK)  »
For those that are interested in dating photographs by fashion trends have a look at the BBC Archive section on the BBC site. They are currently running a program that was first shown in  1957 with regards to fashion through the ages which was presented by Doris Langley Moore. Well worth a visit just to hear Doris speak of "Hats on Heds".
http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/whatwewore/5607.shtml?all=1&id=5607

if the link does not work ( as is the norm with the links that I try to post) go to the BBC site and put in BBC Archives in the search box which should bring the page up that you are looking for.

Scotland / Jacobite prisoners from 1745
« on: Monday 28 January 08 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
Don't know if this will help anyone but I have just picked up a list of the 303 prisoners who were held in the powder magazines at Tilbury Fort in Essex between 1746 and 1750 after being taken prisoner following the uprising in '45. The prisoners were held at Inverness prior to being taken, by seven ships, to London and then onwards to Tilbury.
The list contains the prisoners name and what happened to them. The following is an example of how the information (albeit sparse) is laid out, the number at the front of the name is the prisoners number.
881 David Fettes  Transported 31-3-1747
very few details are given for most of those listed although the entry for James Davidson (prisoners number 652) has ...."Released aged 14 reported to be a very wicked boy.."....... nothing is given in the way of where these people came from in Scotland.
As there are over 300 names listed it would difficult to list them all here but set out below is the surnames that are contained in the list.
