Scotland / 1841 census my only hope
« on: Saturday 05 November 05 22:52 GMT (UK)  »
This is driving me balmy.  I'm trying to find the recorded births of a whole family.
Their name is Lochart (Lockhart), James and Christina nee McKelvie(Christian)born 1791 Kilmory Isle of Araan.  They were married in Ayr Ayrshire on 29 Nov 1811.
Children:
Alexander
James
Leslie may have lived Isle of Mann
Catherine married James Neilson 1845 Gorbals Lanark
Agnes married John Stevenson Gorbals Lanark
Mary born c1823 came to NZ with mother by then a widow.
Janet born c1825 came to NZ with mother
Isabella Ferrier born c1832 came to NZ with mother
I think I need a miracle or the 1841 census as they arrived in NZ Nov 1851.
Much thanks for any help with this. I've searched physically the IGI and OPR and on the internet and on Scotlands people site.

« on: Wednesday 05 October 05 08:07 BST (UK)  »
Could any let me know who Leslie Lockart was.  I spotted him on an Isle of Mann page about 1865 and now can't find the page again.
The family I'm interested in and which he may be part of is
Father James Lockart married Ayr Aryshire to
Mother Christina (Christian) nee McKelvie born 1796 Kilmory Isle of Aran
Alexander
James
Agnes married Stevenson
Leslie
Katherine married James Neilson
Mary
Janet
Isabel Ferrier

I can't find them anywhere until 1851 then find Christian, Mary, Janet and Isabel en route to New Zealand on the 'Simlah'.
Thank you (It's a cold night in NZ)

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Laxton pre 1840 marriage lookup HOLMES
« on: Monday 26 September 05 10:16 BST (UK)  »
Samuel Holmes and Sarah from Nottinghamshire.  Sarah may be a widow with son George.
Samuel and Sarah plus George and William immigrated to Australia as bounty immigrants on the 'Champion' 5th of Oct 1840. William was six, George was nine. The shipping information suggests they were from Layton which I've interpreted as Laxton because I found a William born to a Samuel and Sarah on the IGI for 7 April 1834 at Laxton. A Hannah was born to them as well, though she didn't make the ship.
Would love to know more although I will be going to order the parish films from the LDS

Ayrshire / Robert Hannah 1851 census lookup please
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 10:24 BST (UK)  »
Robert Hannah christened 1815 Liverpool married Elizabeth Barton born 1819 from Lancashire, marriage not found yet.  They both died in Glasgow.  I have found a reference to a Robert and Elizabeth on the South Scottish 1851 census.  Robert aged 37, Elizabeth 33 and Margaret 13. Since I know they had two boys, Robert Stuart Hannah age 11 and Stitt Chrichton Hannah age 8 who should be with them but are not, could someone tell me an address since there was very little information on the Cd.  The reference is 596/34/15/10/255926 for Robert.

Armed Forces / Regimental records help needed
« on: Monday 29 August 05 10:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I had a wonderful find a few years ago when I was searching an LDS film - Brampton Cumberland for news of my Campbell family and here it is,  I hope someone could deciper it and help me choose where to look for more facts. I can't get any further back for this Robert Campbell and I am hoping regimental records might be the best place to start.  Robert was born in 1728 and I found his marriage in 1791, so I take it he retired from the army before marriage at the age of 63, he then had five children and outlived his young wife.  He may also have left a family overseas I guess.

From the Carlisle Patriot 10 May 1878 of a lecture in Brampton by the Vicar about Bonnie Prince Charlie (1745).
"Another interesting link with that period was old Robert Campbell, the locksmith, still living in Brampton whose father, to use Robert's own words, ""came here with Charlie, and after various other adventures, such as serving under General Wolfe, at Quebec, returned to settle at Brampton, where he died in 1838, aged 109Yrs."

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Old Harbour Lane Brixton
« on: Monday 29 August 05 09:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I received a certificate today dated Sept 1876.  A child was born at this address when the parents were living at 10 Cambria? Rd, East Brixton.  Might this be a lying in hospital?  The parents were on holiday from Australia visiting relatives but I didn't know any lived in this area. The parents names were Joseph Dear and Martha Dear nee Blackley.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / DEAR family in Hornchurch
« on: Monday 29 August 05 09:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm new to this forum.  I would love to know what Hornchurch looks like.  The 'Dears' lived in High St for generations and children from all generations look like they went to London for work.  However, they wanted to be buried in Hornchurch and they also sent the odd child back to be looked after 'at home' since someone always stayed there.

I was surprised to find that only some of the Hornchurch records are on the IGI, so I've ordered in some LDS films since I live in NZ.

If anyone could answer this query.  William Dear christened 1771 in Hornchurch was an agricultural labourer, however, he managed to get his children into apprenticeships so that eventually they became journeymen.  How might he have been able to do this with his resources?
