Hi all, Happy year everyone - I hope 2024 is a fantastic year for you all!

A quick (I think) question... I want to identify who was living on a specific street in PETONE Wgton in the 1950's.  Is it possible to access that?

Thanks in advance as always.

Hi there, could anyone assist me with a "persistently naughty" relative plse.  Timothy Patrick Murphy born in Wellington 1883 to Daniel and Johanna Murphy - was an AUSTRALIAN soldier in WW1 (I say that with tongue in cheek to some degree because it looks like he spent as much time in prison and/or waiting for court martials as he did in battles!).

It appears he returned from war and also returned to Wellington NZ sometime thereafter.

Then, naturally, he pops up in Wellington Prison in April 1932 writing to the military requesting they send him his war medals. I have no idea how long he was in prior to this or why, or for how long.

I have tried to locate him on the Police Gazettes and, oddly, PapersPast, but was unsuccessful for either which I don't understand.

I wonder if someone could assist in locating him in the Kiwi penal system for me plse.

Thanks, as always,
Carol

Australia / He lived! He Died! Lionel "Leo" Augustus Mercer
« on: Tuesday 16 June 20 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Lionel "Leo" Augustus Mercer was born illegitimate on the 26 April 1905 in NZ (His mother was using the pesudonym of Mercer has her surname at the time).

Leo was placed into state care/orphanages and, as far as I know, he never knew who his parents were.  The family history in NZ is long and convoluted but I have pretty much all of that information.

There are a couple of school records for him in NZ but nothing else.

At the age of 22 on the 9 Sept 1927 he boards a boat for NSW Australia... AND COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS UNTIL HIS death on 23 Nov 1994 in Sunbury, Victoria, Australia.

I have a copy of a cemetery plaque and his probate which identifies no living relatives and that's it:(

Surely, there would be census docs or some kind of record of the man in Australia?  I've spent countless hours trawling through Trove and the Australian National Archives to no avail.

If anyone with superior research skills could take a look at this for me to see if I can break through the brick wall... I would be MOST GRATEFUL.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Hi, I wonder if someone could figure out the first portion of this pub's name listed with Apollonia Morris on the attached portion of the 1851 census Kirkdale, Liverpool :

??? Arms, 15 Derby Street, Kirkdale, Liverpool
Apollonia Morris Barhouse Keeper.

Also, if anyone could figure out the marital status that would be wonderful!!  Her husband seems to have disappeared off all records from abut 1840.

Also, would that still be the street name now?

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.  I've checked defunct pubs lists, maps and historical listings with no success:(

Hi there, I am wondering if someone is available to assist who has a more in-depth knowledge of the above subject and location?

I have tracked down a Marriage by Licence for Robert Morris and Apollonia Pritchard 6 Jul 1824 at St Andrew's Anglican Church in Holborn Middlesex. (I have seen the copy of the register showing it was a Licence marriage.)

I understand that licence marriages are registered in separate registers (from marriages by banns) - but am now unsure of how much more I could discover about them, other than what I already have??

I am trying to confirm the parentage for both individuals (She is apparently from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, and he is from Halton, Cheshire... which may be why they were married by licence (i.e. out of area).

So--- my question is: would there be any more information available in the St Andrew's parish marriage records on those two people than what I already have?

As always -GREATLY APPRECIATE any assistance, guidance etc!!

New Zealand Completed Requests / No record of death in NZBDM
« on: Sunday 02 June 19 17:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi there - I wonder if someone with a much better developed skill set than mine obviously is could possibly assist???  I mean, seriously, it should be a simple thing that I apparently haven't managed to master:(

I know Edmund Herne Cording born in England 1789 died in New Zealand (Wellington area) on 31st Oct 1842~!  But I have been unable to find a record of his death in NZBDM despite trying a few name variations.

Aside from the obits in the paper I have this nugget of info... although I am not sure it would affect the actual recording of the death would it?

Anglican ChurchBirth    1789
Death    1842 (aged 52–53)
Wellington, New Zealand
Burial    Body lost or destroyed, Specifically: Burial Location Unknown
Memorial ID    184323034 · View Source

I can't find a specific birth record for him to confirm the info I have for his parents in the UK; so wanted to verify the facts against his death cert.

As always, any assistance greatly appreciated:)

New Zealand Completed Requests / The birth with no name!
« on: Wednesday 22 May 19 12:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, so I am driving myself a little crazy with this and decided it needed finer minds than my own!

1) Is it possible to identify a person born in NZ by their dob alone?
2) I know there is a genealogical society which produces various disks but I am not sure if the birth one would allow a search just by dob?

I have the date of birth and likely the area - but have been unable to find a birth record for him under any of the likely surnames in NZ BDM.

He died not knowing who his father was.  The mother was a VERY sad story and I have put in a fair bit of work and effort trying to identify a likely father for this person.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks, as always,
Carol

« on: Wednesday 28 November 18 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to find out where a young unmarried woman would have had a child in the Nelson area in 1886?  Was there some kind of hospital/home for that purpose?  The birth cert specifies "Washington Valley, Nelson"

Thanks as always!! :) :) :)

New Zealand Completed Requests / Tracking down a "WRITER" in the Oamaru area
« on: Thursday 19 July 18 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi there - as part of my research on the extended members of one of my ancestral lines - today, I located a couple of obits for one of my 3rd gr uncles (who is from one of the earliest settler families in the Tokomairiro district)

The obits both mention Thomas moved to Oamaru 70 years before his death where he was a founding member of the volunteer fire brigade.

But one obit also mentioned that he "wrote a number of interesting articles on life in Oamaru in the early 'seventies', 'eighties" and nineties"I would love to track down some of those "interesting articles"!!!

His details are:
Thomas Brookes  born 1855 Tokomairio, Otago (to Thomas Brookes Snr and Isabella Johnstone)
Thomas died 14 Nov 1939, Dunedin, NZ

I have quite a bit of info on the family (including his parents and several siblings), so at this point I am specifically trying to track down any of these articles he may have written---I would assume for a local publication?

ANY HELP at all, as always, would be gratefully received:)
Thanks!!!
Regards, Carol
