I am trying to trace Elizabeth Turner’s parents and birth details to expand this interesting branch of the family. Any help or pointers would be great.
Allegedly: Elizabeth, aged 16, the daughter of a ‘respectable Devon Clergyman’ eloped with Hugh Junor Broune (Browne) and fled to Victoria Australia where they married in 1858 And founded a bit of a dynasty with 6 sons and 5 daughters.  Hugh J Browne was the son of a Presbyterian minister (b 1829 Edinburgh) and 23 years Elizabeth’s senior. Having farmed cattle in Natal and prospected for gold in Australia, Browne returned to Britain and seduced young Elizabeth And whisked her off to Oz.

In 1891 Hugh and Elizabeth Browne, along with several daughters are found lodging in St Pancras, London, and during their trip they manage to marry off 2 daughters (success!). In the 1891 census, Elizabeth is recorded as having been born in Dieppe France in 1942. This is the only clue I have of her origins.
Ancestry offers a hint here from the 1851 census:  Elizabeth Brisla, b 1841 Diappre France, parents John and Ann Brisla, residence Exeter St Paul’s, Devon.  This seemed like a link, but I cannot cross reference this Census record anywhere. I suspect the name is a transcription error as ‘Brisla’ does not appear as a surname anywhere.
Whites directory of Devon and Exeter (1850?) does have a reverend John Fisher Turner in Exeter as a potential Father, but he is well documented and had no child called Elizabeth. I’ve had to rule him out.

Fascinating Family the Browne’s, including spiritualism, death by sharks, and the first elected Australian prime minister. But so little info on Elizabeth Turner (Brisla?) and her forebears.

Can anyone help?

Hello Lincolnshire,

In tracing my mother’s paternal lineage, I have arrived in Belton in Axholme (nearEpworth) in the mid 1600s. Several generations of Platts were christened in Belton, though it seems they preferred to get married in Amcotts. I have posted an enquiry on the Lincolnshire general board but have had no leads. I believe that a couple of specific look-up requests might help me sort out the Platts from the earlier part of the 1600s into family groups. Here goes:

From FamilySearch
Robert Platts marries Anne Heines in Amcotts 17Nov 1606
Is there any indication in the marriage record of Robert’s age, residence, status or fathers name?

Robert Platts marries Elizabeth Woorrall in Amcotts 29 Aug 1627
Again, age, residence, status (bachelor or widower) and fathers name could help establish whether this is the same Robert who remarries or 2 different Roberts!

Possible children from marriage 1 could be; Robert b 23 Sep 1614 and George b12Nov 1615 dies 1618. Their fathers are given as Robert but no mother/wife recorded.

Possible children from marriage 2 could be: George b13 Jul 1628; Edmond b20 Feb 1630; Charles b30 Mar 1634; John b21 May 1637 and Elizabeth b13Sep 1640. All have the Father as Robert, while John and Elizabeth have the mothers named as Elizabeth.

I’ll be really grateful for any help with the marriage details and invite anyone to speculate on how many Robert Platts there might be in Belton during the period 1600-1650!
Many thanks

Lincolnshire / Platts family from Belton in the missing generation?
« on: Saturday 23 March 19 22:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Linconshire Chatters,
My mothers pedigree leads me back to the Platts family from Belton (in Axholme/near Epworth) Lincs.
I am fairly confident that my Platts line is OK back to a Robert Platts who married Sarah Akes in 1678 in Amcotts, Lincs. Their children were christened in Belton.  I can find no birth details for this Robert although there are several previous generations of Platts living in Belton.
Since Robert Platts is likely to have been born about 1654-59, the candidates for his father would seem to be:
George (b1628 m Helin ?date and maiden name?)
Edmond (b 1630)
Charles (b 1634 m 1654 to Kathrin Ellis in Amcotts)
John (b 1637 m Rebecca ? Date and maiden name?)

All the above were fathered by one or more Robert Plattses In Belton. The free search sites show a Robert  born 23/9/1614  father Robert and another Robert born 8/5/1560 ( father Johannis).

Can anyone shed any light on the relationship between these early members of the Platts family.

Many thanks for any leads you can suggest

Hello Expert Rooters,
I've traced my husband's mother's family back to a bunch of Smiths, based around Lynn (Kings, South etc). The furthest I have reached are George and Wright as per the title. Married in 1774, I expect both were born between 1745 and 1755. While I realise it's almost impossible to find out which George this is from the many George Smiths born in this period, I would have though an unusual first name like Wright should be traceable, but I cannot progress. It is not a transcription error on the marriage record, as she is named as Wright as mother on earch of the records for 4 little Wright Smiths born in the 1780s.
Details from Ancestry free: George Smith = Wright Eldridge
Banns 28/8/1774
Marriage 31/8/1774
Lynn, Norfolk
Children: George, James, Benjamin and Ann
If anyone can suggest births and parentage for either, I'd be very grateful.
Cheers

Shropshire / Jones-Williams marriage in Buildwas 1820?
« on: Tuesday 13 March 18 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,
I have tracked my husband's family back to this marriage in Shropshire. But finding their antecedents is a problem, not surprising looking for Joneses and Williamses when that close to Wales!
I am hopeful that someone, with more resources than me, might be able to take a closer look at the marriage details and perhaps find further details - such as the names of the couples parents or where they came from. I would be most grateful for any pointers. The details I have are:

Marriage of John Jones to Frances Williams; Buildwas Shropshire; 29 May 1820
Approximate dates of birth from 1841/51 census. John Jones 1790-91; Frances Williams 1792-96
John Jones may have been born in Whitehaven Herefordshire (1851 census).
Many thanks for any clues you can offer.
Cheers

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Drinkwater/Florey marriage -Standlake? Oxon 1846
« on: Sunday 05 January 14 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,
I am a rootschat virgin, so please be gentle if my etiquette is faulty.
Born a Drinkwater, I have traced my paternal line from Yorkshire to a George D (b 1849) in Standlake Oxon.
From the Floreys of Standlake genealogy document I have the following

45. MARY8 FLOREY (JOSEPH7, RICHARD6, ROBERT5, ROBERT4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, ROBERT1) was born February 17, 1828 in Standlake. She married JULES DRINKWATER April 11, 1846, son of JOHN DRINKWATER.

Child of MARY FLOREY and JULES DRINKWATER is: George born about 1849 in standlake.

By 1851, the census records a widowed Mary and child as living back with her mother Hannah Florey in Standlake.

Can anyone offer a lead on the origins or fate of Jules DRINKWATER or his father John? I'm guessing they were from Oxfordshire, that the marriage was in Standlake, Witney or nearby, but can find no trace online.
Any help gratefully received before I treck to the Oxford History Centre.
Thanks
