Graveyards and Gravestones / Craigton Cemetery - Glasgow
« on: Thursday 26 October 23 00:24 BST (UK)  »
I've found some relatives buried in Craigton Cemetery - judging by the burial records, I'm sure it says section U. I don't have the original lair record because I don't know when it was purchased, but the deaths I know of begin around 1891.
Looking at the map/layout for Craigton there doesn't seem to be a section U.
Has anyone else came across this? Is U a newer section, not noted on the layouts? Or could I be reading wrong?
Attached a snippet of the Lair/Section.
Thanks.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Can't make out name.

Looking at the death certificate for a Margaret Ross in 1880 in Banffshire, I just can't seem to make out the name of her son in law who signed it.
Any ideas?

Scotland / Ballingall/Gall surname
« on: Friday 27 April 18 14:56 BST (UK)  »
I've been working on the Ballingall part of my tree and there are certain census/certs I can't find, but there are ones that could fit the gaps, except for the name - Gall.

Has anyone came across these names in their tree, or know if Gall could be a shortened version of Ballingall?

Ireland / Mother of David Arnott (born 1826)
« on: Wednesday 29 November 17 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have Arnott descendants - mostly in Scotland - but I'm having some problems with David Arnott (born around 1826 in Ireland - unsure which part).
He was living in Scotland by at least 1849 until he died in 1900.

He had married his second wife in 1870 and on that cert his father is listed as Alexander Arnott and his mother is listed as Elizabeth Shannon.
On his death cert, his parents are Alexander Arnott and Helen Costerley. Why the different mothers?

I've found some records for an Alexander Arnott (son to an Alexander Arnott and Elizabeth Shannon born around 1833) which say he was born in Downpatrick.

Not really sure what to do next. Would this fit in with anyone on here?

Census and Resource Discussion / Can't find Ballingall family in 1871 scotland.
« on: Wednesday 10 February 16 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x great grandparents John Ballingall and Helen Taylor married in 1864 in Anderston, Glasgow. They had they had 3 living children (that I know of) by the 1871 census.

Margaret (b. 1865)
Mary Ann (b. 1868)
William (b. November 1870)

In the 1871 census John is living himself (well, a boarder is staying with him) in Teviot Street, Anderston - which is where Mary Ann & William were born.

I can't find Helen and the 3 children, and I don't know much about her or her family other than she would be roughly 26 in 1871 - and (from other census) she was born in Perth.

After that they have more children born in Teviot Street and are living together onwards - just no sign of Helen/children in 1871.

If anyone has time it'd be great to get some help - finding them might even help me find out more about her family depending on where they are.

Family History Beginners Board / Date on OPR records.
« on: Tuesday 02 February 16 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
On a few of the OPR records (birth/marriage) that I've came across, I'm not sure which date is for which entry - the date written before or after the names.

I've attached a snippet of one.

The Common Room / Forename - Bernard
« on: Monday 16 November 15 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
Is Bernard a variant of Barnabas?

From my 4th great granddads death cert his father is listed as Bernard, but everything else that looks related to his family has his father listed as Barnabas.

United States of America / 1930 Census Question
« on: Wednesday 07 October 15 20:53 BST (UK)  »
My great aunt and her family moved from Glasgow to Illinois in the 1920's.

I've found them in the 1930 census (minus two of their sons - Robert and Donald) living at 1909 Cass Street, Joliet.

I then looked for Robert/Donald and found them both in 1930 on a separate page, living with (or at least written underneath) another family - listed as 'sons'.

Though they are both listed as also staying at 1909 Cass Street, the family they're with are living at 2108.

They are all back living together again in 1940.

Would Robert/Donald actually be living with their real family and it had just been written on a different page? Or could they just be visiting this other family in 1930? Though why be listed as sons?

I've attached snippets of both 1930 census - thanks for any help, I'm pretty new to the US records.
