Gt Gt gfathther Edwin, was born 1827 NY State USA. Arrived in Melbourne c 1853 . Married a lass from Aberdeen. They had a son in 1855  and moved north to Ballarat  before Aug 1856. Had 2 daughters and then moved way north up to Rockhampton  early 1861
In 1863 gg Gfather Edwin bought 500 pounds worth of land within Rockhampton    .  Ive searched the Star newspaper ( Ballarat  paper) 1855-61 . Could only find a brief political ref Dec 1856 and he got into trouble for not registering his sons birth 22 Jan 1860 was find 5 shillings  But no bank heists ??  No Lotto back then   Dont have any ref to him being  a miner Does anyone know if any major  Ballarat gold discoveries were recorded ?   Only one I recall is Holtermans Nugget  but was much later and in NSW anyway. 500 pounds was a great deal of money back then  ?

Elijah WRIGHT , 19yo is recorded in Ancestrys England & Wales Criminal Register on 16 Mar 1847 with malicious stabbing and wounding to cause disfigurement in company of Thomas MOORE 19, & George COOK 24. Elijah got 10 years. Cant find records here of Thomas & George making the long journey

Staffordshire Archives list an on line Staffordshire Qrt Session index, but no Elijah WRIGHT. I tackled FindMyPast newspaper date base  to see if I could find more info on who was attacked .... That was wishful thinking ::)
Elijah was b 1828 Stoke of Trent son of Elijah and Sarah WRIGHT nee SHERRATT

Some local help would be great

Many thanks

c1779,  unknown maiden name early 1800's . Their first child, John bapt 1809 Gt Gaddesden. Rest of children also b Gt Gaddesden  Mary died there 1849 and Thomas 1855.

« on: Thursday 06 July 17 05:45 BST (UK)  »
Have been doing some research for a friend.  He is insistent that his father was in the UK Merchant Marine in WW2. Done a search into such info and cant find any ref to a  David Walter NEWSOM/E, born 6 May  1916
I know there was Small Ships Fleet ( or Little Ships ) that plied out of Australian ports during WW2
and about the evacuation of Dunkirk.  Was there a general fleet during all of WW2 of misc  ships ?

David Walter NEWSOM m Betty RYMES in 1939 . Had a son in 1942 and migrated to Australia in 1953.

World War Two / My fathers WW2 Army file ?
« on: Thursday 22 September 16 11:50 BST (UK)  »
Advice please on best way to get copy of my Dads UK Army service file ?

Google found  www.gov.uk/get copy of military service  files   Would appear to be a form to download & print, fill out and airmail post with a  30 pounds Sterling cheque .  Tis a long time since I had to get a  GBS cheque from an Australian bank . I remember the  cost was quite  prohibitive

I know Dad enlisted  shortly after war  was declared . He married in Nov 1939 and wore his Army uniform but didn't serve overseas

He died here back in 1996

Many thanks

Hertfordshire / How did Violet leave such a large estate ?
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 14:25 BST (UK)  »
Very recently I discovered spinster Violet REDDING,  my 1st cousin , 1 gen removed, left over 100,000 pounds when she d 23 August 1990.  As far as I know she lived all her life in Berkhamstead. In the 1939 Register she's listed as a domestic, living with her mother.  Am really curious as to how she acquired so much money ? . She left it all to one unrelated person who in turn died in 2000

Any ideas ???
