For Sale / Wanted / Events / Professional researcher wanted in France
« on: Tuesday 02 February 16 03:08 GMT (UK)  »
I have a friend who would like to have someone do some research in France. She has some information but there seem to be quite a lot of loose ends with multiple marriages.
Can anyone recommend a professional researcher for her? The area of interest is Criel, in Oise.

Many thanks

Australia / Ellen COCHRANE, teacher, 1909 Bruthen, Victoria
« on: Thursday 22 January 15 04:41 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone who is visiting the Public Record Office would be kind enough to consult the microfilm copies of the Teacher Record Books for Ellen Cochrane, Teacher Record Number 12301 who was appointed to Bruthen in 1909, see
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/91883980?searchTerm=%22cochrane%22&searchLimits=l-state=Victoria
Her date of birth and place of birth if possible would be useful also appointments before/after Bruthen. Trying to eliminate her from another Cochrane family in Bruthen - all the names show up together on the 1909 Census record.

Many thanks in advance if someone has the time and energy to pursue this.

Northumberland / Best strategy for research on Sarah White?
« on: Friday 11 April 14 10:44 BST (UK)  »
I was hoping that people might give me some advice on possible ways to proceed on researching Sarah White.

Sarah married Thomas Cochrane, possibly an irregular border marriage in 1853 or 1854. Thomas was not married at the 1851 census and two certificates record a marriage in 1854 in Scotland or on 14 Dec 1853 at Turbar (sic) in Scotland.. A kind poster checked marriages but no record found at Lamberton Toll (though two others in the Cochrane family married there)

Sarah died in Victoria in Australia in 1891. At the time her age was given as 58 years. Her parents were recorded as John White, farmer, and Sarah Moffat. The funeral service was Presbyterian.

I don't have a subscription to Ancestry so rely on familysearch.

I have found a birth/christening of Sarah White to John White and Sarah Moffit in January 1831 at Branton (Presbyterian).

There is another Sarah White christened at Warenford (Presbyterian) in April 1831, Parents James White and Sarah Bates.

The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses show the family of John and Sarah White. A very large family and I am somewhat confused by duplicated christian names for children. John is recorded as having been born at Norham and Sarah at Lowick.

1841 shows the family at Bamburgh, township of Warenton
1851 at Berwick, but 20 year old Sarah has left home and is probably the Sarah White recorded at Goswick working as a servant. The children in the family of John and Sarah are recorded as having been born in Norham, Belford, Chillingham, Chatton, Holy Island, Kyloe and Holy Island.

Interestingly on the record of the birth of one of her children her place of birth is given as Gusick (Goswick) and maybe she met her husband here.

I am unable to find any of the births (with possible exception of Alexander chr 1829 in Chillingham father John mother Janet White). Nor have I been able to find a marriage of a John White and a Sarah Moffit.

So I have not been able to confirm if this is the correct family for John White/Sarah because I cannot find her maiden surname.

The emphasis on Presbyterian faith and the period which we are considering makes me think the real problem is that none of the relevant records are available on line.

I have tried sending a general query to the Berwick records office but they are apparently too busy to reply giving me some advice.

So do I employ a private researcher (can anyone recommend someone?) or do I try to purchase copies of any relevant parishes and hope to strike it lucky?

Grateful for any ideas as to how to proceed.

Thanks

Northumberland Lookup Requests / North Sunderland Presbyterian Records
« on: Friday 21 March 14 10:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have been hunting for the marriage of Henry James Cochrane to an Elizabeth possibly Watson. At the 1851 Census Henry was living at Embleton with his wife Elizabeth who was aged 29 and was said to have been born at Shank Hall.

At the time they had a two month old son, John, born at Embleton.

I cannot find a marriage in Northumberland for Henry and Elizabeth in Northumberland. Nor is there apparently any record of them marrying at Lamberton Toll.

Neither can I find a baptism for John nor a record in the civil registration records.

A second son, Robert, was baptised at St Paul, North Sunderland in 1853.

There are no more children for this family that I have been able to identify.

One guess is that Elizabeth died soon after the birth of Robert. I cannot find a burial record for her.

I am wondering if anyone would be able to look in the records of the Presbyterian church at North Sunderland to see whether there is a birth for John recorded in 1851, or a burial for Elizabeth sometime in the years 1853 to about 1860. Unfortunately the records do not include marriages for this period.

Any other suggestions as to what might be the correct record for this family would be much appreciated.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Lamberton Toll Marriages
« on: Tuesday 18 February 14 11:54 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anyone with access to the index for Lamberton Toll marriages between 1849 and 1855 who would be willing to look for the marriage of a Thomas Cochrane? The period of interest is between the Census in 1851 and the middle of 1855.

With thanks
