I was hoping that people might give me some advice on possible ways to proceed on researching Sarah White.
Sarah married Thomas Cochrane, possibly an irregular border marriage in 1853 or 1854. Thomas was not married at the 1851 census and two certificates record a marriage in 1854 in Scotland or on 14 Dec 1853 at Turbar (sic) in Scotland.. A kind poster checked marriages but no record found at Lamberton Toll (though two others in the Cochrane family married there)
Sarah died in Victoria in Australia in 1891. At the time her age was given as 58 years. Her parents were recorded as John White, farmer, and Sarah Moffat. The funeral service was Presbyterian.
I don't have a subscription to Ancestry so rely on familysearch.
I have found a birth/christening of Sarah White to John White and Sarah Moffit in January 1831 at Branton (Presbyterian).
There is another Sarah White christened at Warenford (Presbyterian) in April 1831, Parents James White and Sarah Bates.
The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses show the family of John and Sarah White. A very large family and I am somewhat confused by duplicated christian names for children. John is recorded as having been born at Norham and Sarah at Lowick.
1841 shows the family at Bamburgh, township of Warenton
1851 at Berwick, but 20 year old Sarah has left home and is probably the Sarah White recorded at Goswick working as a servant. The children in the family of John and Sarah are recorded as having been born in Norham, Belford, Chillingham, Chatton, Holy Island, Kyloe and Holy Island.
Interestingly on the record of the birth of one of her children her place of birth is given as Gusick (Goswick) and maybe she met her husband here.
I am unable to find any of the births (with possible exception of Alexander chr 1829 in Chillingham father John mother Janet White). Nor have I been able to find a marriage of a John White and a Sarah Moffit.
So I have not been able to confirm if this is the correct family for John White/Sarah because I cannot find her maiden surname.
The emphasis on Presbyterian faith and the period which we are considering makes me think the real problem is that none of the relevant records are available on line.
I have tried sending a general query to the Berwick records office but they are apparently too busy to reply giving me some advice.
So do I employ a private researcher (can anyone recommend someone?) or do I try to purchase copies of any relevant parishes and hope to strike it lucky?
Grateful for any ideas as to how to proceed.
Thanks
