Sussex Lookup Requests / 1901 lookup, please - Richard G COTTINGHAM
« on: Wednesday 30 March 22 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

Can anyone provide me with the details of Richard G COTTINGHAM's household in 1901? Richard's birth was registered in Horsham and he would have been 7 years old at the time of the census. I guess he can be found in Horsham in 1901. I'm particularly interested in his father's given name, age and place of birth.

Many thanks,
Stovepipe

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / 1911 Census lookup, please - MASKELL *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 06 August 19 15:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi Sussex Rootschatters,

I'm trying to identify the Edith MASKELL whose death (aged 28) was registered at Eastbourne in Q3 1905 with the Edith AVERY who married Frank Maskell in Eastbourne district, Q2 1901.

Judging by mother's maiden surname in the births index there were three children born before Edith's death, viz.
Clement Frank (Q4 1901)
Olive Edith (Q1 1903)
Eslie Joel (Q1 1905)
all births registered in Uckfield.

Anything that a kind Rootschatter can tell me about this family in the 1911 census would be very appreciated. I'm especially keen to know the birth locations of the children and to see if Frank is a widower. (Though there's a chance he may have remarried before 1911 - if he's the Frank Maskell whose marriage was registered in Uckfield in Q4 1906.)

Thanks in advance,
Stovepipe

Thomas PARSONS of Heathfield made his will in December 1788 and it was proved in May 1789. He was survived by his wife, Sarah, and three children, namely daughters Sarah GASSON & Hannah HARMER and son Henry PARSONS.

Does the SMI have a marriage for Thomas PARSONS and Sarah, around 1730?

And one for Sarah PARSONS and her husband surnamed GASSON, between say 1750 and 1788? Likewise, one for Hannah PARSONS and a HARMER male?

Back to Thomas's will - he names various grandchildren without identifying their parents (his daughters in most cases since they don't have his surname). I guess they are daughters who predeceased him. One of the daughters may have been named Grace; I've not found baptisms for any others and those I have found are doubtful because of the mother being named Elizabeth, not Sarah as in the will.

The grandchildren are Ann Thompson, Elizabeth Potten, John Thompson, Abraham Thompson, Mary Thompson, Hester Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Elizabeth Eastwood and Jane Read. Thomas doesn't give any other identifying information.

I'd like to identify the PARSONS women (and their spouses) who are the parents of these children. Can the SMI help? This may be too much to ask - it's quite possible some of the daughters may have married twice and their second marriages won't be found in the SMI under the PARSONS name.

Thanks for any help.

Sussex / Whatever happened to baby Alfred FIELD of Patching?
« on: Thursday 22 February 18 17:04 GMT (UK)  »
Alfred Charles FIELD was baptised at the church of St John the Divine, Patching, on 1 May 1887. At the time his mother, Alice FIELD, was an unmarried servant aged 17 years.

This baptism entry is the only record I have of Alfred's existence. I have failed to find him in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses, in the civil registration births and deaths indices, and I cannot find a burial for him in the church records of Patching and nearby parishes.

Please, can anyone out there find any other record of him?

There is a birth registration index entry for an Alfred Charles HAYNES at East Preston in the March quarter of 1887. Could he be identified as the child baptised at Patching? Is there any other record of Alfred HAYNES that could answer that question one way or the other?

Thanks for any help.

Sussex / Heathfield Friendly Society, Crown Hotel
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 20:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Sussex Rootschatters,

One of my ancestors, a Heathfield resident, died in 1913 and in his obituary it's stated that "He was one of the earliest members of the old Heathfield Friendly Society in connection with the Crown Hotel."

There's nothing more on this aspect of his life, so I wonder if some of you can provide me with any general background information about the society and its connection to the Crown Hotel. Google has rather let me down, I'm afraid.

Thanks in anticipation,
Stovepipe

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Inventory 1820
« on: Friday 06 January 17 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

Attached is an image of the back of John Avery's Inventory of 1820, a list of people including John's widow. None of those listed is the appraiser (who's named on the front side of the page). Nothing else is written on the back.

What is the character to the right of the bracket? And in the above context what does it signify?

Thanks for any help,
Stovepipe

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1765 will - names of witnesses, please
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I'd gratefully receive confirmation of the following three names, witnesses to a will made in 1765 in Sussex (if the region makes any difference to likely hands used at the time).

Thanks in advance,
Stovepipe

Sussex Lookup Requests / John Bray, Molly Brown SMI lookup, please * COMPLETED *
« on: Wednesday 07 December 16 17:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Sussex Rootschatters,

According to FamilySearch.org, on 17 January 1780 in Chichester John Bray married Molly Brown. No further details.

I'm slightly red-faced to ask this because I own a copy of the SMI - just can't find it. Would SKS please lookup the marriage and provide all other details from both bride and groom records in the SMI? In particular I'm interested in the groom's status - I suspect he may be a widower and if so I can possibly identify him as the husband in a marriage in Wiltshire 18 years before.

Thanks in advance,
Stovepipe

Hi Rootschatters,

I'm trying to identify the Robert AVERY whose death, aged 82 years, was registered at Uckfield RD in the December quarter of 1850.

Information about him from the 1841 census would be very appreciated. Can anyone find him there? I suspect he may have lived in Mayfield.

Thanks in advance,
Stovepipe
