The Common Room / Birth and Parents of Enoch (1849 - 1880)
« on: Monday 28 August 17 00:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi  :)

I wondered if anyone could help me find a birth date and the parents of an Enoch Morecroft.

Enoch was married in 1875 in Dinapore, India to a Caroline Kelly. The record states he was born in 1849.

Enoch served in the 109th Regiment of the Bombay Infantry and later the 66th Berkshire Regiment. He was killed in action in 1880 - I don't know if these facts will be at all helpful to anyone.

His marriage record states his father was 'G Morecroft', which hasn't proved to be helpful so far. I've found a potential birth in 1847 for Enoch in Staffordshire, but I cannot find the family on any Census Records.

Thanks in advance for any advice, help and tips!

Europe / Zanotti - Italy
« on: Friday 26 August 16 12:48 BST (UK)  »
I'm currently searching for a birth record of Urbano Zanotti born 31 October 1920 and died 26 Nov 1998. I know he was born in Italy and died in the UK, but unfortunately I don't have access to any Italian birth records.

Could anyone be of help?

Thanks in advance!  :)

Nottinghamshire / Sneinton Lunatic Asylum Death Records
« on: Friday 12 August 16 17:45 BST (UK)  »
I've found a possible link to my family tree; Hannah Wheatley was born in 1792 in Beeston, and in the 1841 Census, a Hannah Wheatley is a patient at the Lunatic Asylum in Sneinton. Same age and date of birth.

I can't find any date for a death or burial, or any records following this one. Does anyone know where I may find one? Nothing on the Parish records, but then again, I heard if you were in an asylum you weren't buried in church graveyards.

Thanks in advance. :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Census Record - Name of Road
« on: Friday 12 August 16 14:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm struggling to figure out what the name of the road is. To me, it looks like 'Celery Lane', which is odd, but anyway, I search and searched but found nothing. Can anyone else see a possible alternative?

Many thanks! :)

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Risley Lane, Breaston in Censuses?
« on: Friday 12 August 16 09:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm currently researching Risley Lane in Breaston. Unfortunately, I don't have access to old maps of the lane, so I am unable to find out the name of it in the Census Records, if they even have the address listed.

Of particular interest, is the Rectory still situated on the lane. I'm trying to find out who lived there and when it was built. "As there was no parsonage house in Breaston, a Vestry Meeting, early 1864, proposed petitions be sent to both Ecclesiastical Commissioners and the Bishop of Lichfield requesting the same. Breaston had to wait over forty years for its own rectory when one was built in Risley Lane." - this assumes it was not built until the early 1900's.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I've really struggled to figure out what the following two documents are saying, regarding by GG Grandfather's admission to hospital/sick bay during World War One.

I can see he had scabies, but the family story goes he was mustard gassed. I doubt it will say anything regarding this, but if anyone is able to help decipher what is written, I'd be so thankful!

Thank you

World War One / William Henry Spurr - No service records?
« on: Monday 08 August 16 23:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My Great Grandad was William Henry Spurr, born in 1901 in Nottinghamshire.

The family are aware that he fought in World War 1, and was mustard gassed.

I have found his WW1 Pension Records on Ancestry, which are from 1919, stating he was fit to fight in 'a matter of national emergency'.

However, I can't find any WW1 Service Records. Does anyone know an alternative place to find these? I just feel as thought they must be somewhere, as he served in the war.

Many thanks

Hello all,

My 3rd Great Grandfather William Thums was born in 1855 and died in 1938. He lived in Beeston and was a well-known butcher, working on High Road. He had a number of group memberships which I will list below as this may help in the search:
  • Beeston Ratepayer's Association (abt. 1887)
  • Subscriber/Friend of Nottingham Day Nursery and Orphanage (abt. 1990
  • Member of Beeston Urban District Council (Chairman in 1907 and 1921) (abt. 1900 - abt. 1930)
  • Beeston Choral Society (abt. 1910)
  • Nottinghamshire County Council (abt. 1907)
  • Basford Board of Guardians (Beeston Representative (abt. 1917 - abt. 1923
  • Representative and Trustee for Rushcliffe Hospital Committee (abt. 1921)
  • Chairman of Children's Committee (abt. 1925)
  • Treasurer of Beeston and District Conservative Association (abt. 1929)
I have searched through numerous records in newspapers and what I'd really like are some pictures of my grandfather as a member of these groups. I'm unsure as to where to look, so I'm wondering whether anyone has any pointers or has any pictures which William may be on?

I find it really strange that he was such a prevalent person in Beeston yet this information was so hard to find, and there are no pictures of him?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks,
