Nottinghamshire / D. H. Lawrence and Mr. Akers
« on: Saturday 01 May 21 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Hubby came back with photos this morning after a trip to the cattle market and the crate he paid for is full of family history for the Akers family and his photos over time of D H Lawrence memorabilia. A postcard in there dated 1974 thanks Mr. Akers for the newsletter, so before I dive in to find out more, does anyone here have more knowledge about the group or Mr Akers who lived in Eastwood ?

Have googled but wanted to ask here first while I look.

Some of the photos are stamped with local history library P. L Nottingham so I would love to find out more, the family I can research as they kindly took a photo of the Akers grave which has the maiden name of their mother!

Thanks

United States of America / Arthur John and William James Moore
« on: Thursday 21 November 19 11:54 GMT (UK)  »
Quite a few members of my family went from Leicester To USA because of the shoe trade. I want to look at the my 'elastic web weavers' and the shoe trade but need to double check the boys as these 2 went to Connecticut rather than Brockton like other family.

I have basically tracked them both and can say William went to Connecticut and then Massachusettes, marrying Elizabeth Ann Smith in Manhatten 23 Oct 1882. Elizabeth was also from Leicester and they come home on several visits, William dying 18 Jun 1939 I believe, but I can't access the obit in the Boston newspaper 20 Jun 1939.

Arthur, if I am right, goes to Connecticut and stays there, travelling on the Aurania 25 Oct 1886 and is living in Fairport, 1900 with Lena

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9QF-DM9

I can't find any details for the first marriage but the second one is ref.

ARTHUR   MOORE   FLORENCE   TAYLOR   1904-07-16   BRIDGEPORT

This lady would appear to Florence Brobson who is also from Leicester.

I can find background information for William but not Arthur; the boys parents were James Moore and Lucy Hurst.

Could anyone help with Lena with the hope of finding a marriage and a record of Arthur's parents. I have all the census returns from Leicester and US,

Australia / George Ward burial 1919
« on: Monday 27 May 19 21:12 BST (UK)  »
Am trying to work out the name of the cemetery where George is buried from a letter enclosed in his son's military notes.

George and his wife Gertrude had parted around 1910 and in their son's military notes for George Roy Ward, there are family letters which includes a note of where George snr was buried. It looks like Faulknee/r Cemetery and on gooogling, found the Fawkner Cemetery in Victoria. George lived in Adelaide to May 1917 but had an operation at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne 1919 where he passed away shortly afterwards.

From Trove, his death was 17 Jan 1919 and in the letter Gertrude wrote, Jan 26th.

Have only found this one announcement
The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889 - 1931)
Monday 20 January 1919
WARD.-On the 17th January, at  St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne George Ward, of Charles -street, Adelaide, loving father of Doris and the late Roy Ward, killed in France.

A dedication followed this and was not a family member

Have this ref from a previous query thread

Australia, Death Index, 1787-1985
Name:    Geo Ward
Birth Year:    abt 1866
Age:    53
Death Place:    Fitzroy, Victoria
Father's name:    Ward Geo
Mother's name:    Ward Unknown
Registration Year:    1919
Registration Place:    Victoria
Registration Number:    1694

His business was based in Adelaide as he was a tailor and have no reference of him in Melbourne until reading the letter.

The letter is here page 40

Hoping someone can tell me if I have the right cemetery as I can't see him on the Fawkner burial search website.

Many thanks

Durham Lookup Requests / Stevens Holy, Trinity, East End
« on: Saturday 08 September 18 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Have not researched very much in the Sunderland area and need some help.

Have a baptism of Frances Ann Stevens

Holy Trinity, East End
Born 04/02/1905
Bap 29/03/1905    Frances Ann
Mother Annie    STEPHENS

and a birth certificate 1905 of

Frances Ann Swinney, mother Annie Stevens father William Swinney...married Jun Q 1909.

I have all sorts of info from the paper and burial records for the Stevens/Coggins/Swinney family living or dying around 7 William Street. I am so sure all this ties in as my father in law is with the Coggins family 1939...Hannah Stevens married Thomas Coggins...and Annie's burial is as 6 William Street. Hannah was very good at putting announcements in the paper plus the Stevens and Swinney family live next door to each other 1901.

I can't find Frances 1911 but do have Annie and William. When Frances dies she is Stevens again. School register has a Frances Swinney born April 1904 7 William Street; I really need to know the details on the baptism and wondered if there was anywhere online I could access the information or if on a visit, the best place to view the records.

United States of America / William Tann...death ???
« on: Tuesday 30 January 18 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help or point me in the right direction to try and find when William died.
He is here 1920

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFFM-YV7

Wyandotte, Kansas

and 1925 still there but 88.

He age varies somewhat through census returns but esentially my man was born 15 Nov 1838 England as William Frederick and I am still trying to see if this is the same man who was sent to Gibraltar for his prison term, now that I have seen some more of the prison records online.

Have census returns for this William, children being born New York and New Jersey with his first wife before they settle in Kansas...first marriage for William ??? when to Mary Haitnelt, have details of his second marriage but parents not recorded.

For ref 1875

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QL6F-M5N3

my William was on his way home 1862 from Gibraltar and I am still trying to find out if they are one and the same person or not.

Parents were Frederick Tann and Susannah Bearchall/Burchall

Durham / Frances A. Stevens/Stephens
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 21:22 BST (UK)  »
I have been asked by my brother in law to look into the family and have drawn a blank at his granny. Their father was William Lambton Stephens born 1930 in Sunderland (now deceased), Frances was his mother as she was known to my husband and his brother; William her son was illegitimate.

I think I am on the right lines...

1939 register
Frances A. Stephens 11 Feb 1905

William is in a household with Hannah Coggins (deceased 1941) at 7 William Street, whilst Frances is numbered in the next household. Hannah's maiden name was Stevens/Stephens having married Thomas Coggins.

In the newspapers, I found an obituary for Hannah

Frances is listed as her niece and Billy...as we knew him...as nephew.
Jane...sister....a Jane Stephens was a witness at Hannah's marriage

I can't find a birth for Frances, nor can I find her 1911. I was hoping to have found her 1911 in order to at least establish her birthplace and find her parents as I have been assured she was born in Sunderland.

She had another son in 1943 and would then have a married name of Dunn but I can't find that marriage either.

Would appreciate any help/thoughts with finding Frances, this being the only name they know her as ???

Thank you
