Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Birth: HOWARD Jesse About 1833 Glossop
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
 :) Hi,

I'm looking for a trace of the birth of Jesse Howard in Glossop Derbyshire in about 1833, which for some reason seems to be missing from the Free BMD and LDS sites.  I wonder if anyone can help with advice on why it might be missing or indeed may be able to fill in this blank for me.

Jesse Howard is the first child of the family of which Joe Howard is our ancestor.  Joe Howard emigrated to Castlemaine in Victoria Australia and married Rachel Maxwell.  Together they moved from the gold rush in Australia to the one in New Zealand in the late 1860s and despite never having children, left quite a legacy with traces of Joe standing up for the rights of the Chinese gold prospectors and running a large Hotel/gold assaying and stables.

Here are the details for Jesse, that I am aware of:

Durham Lookup Requests / All Census Lookup please Jago and Preston
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
 :)

Hi,

it has been a few years since I last went wandering down this line of investigation when I came across a double marriage entry, which I have now clarified for our Peel line:

Robert Hudson Jago b: 1880 South Shields, Durham d: 1954 South Shields
m: 29 September 1906
Sarah Jane Younger Preston
Children:  Robert 1906, Helen Preston 1907, Mary Elizabeth 1908, Jenny Kelly Preston 1910 and Robert Hudson 1915.

Robert H Jago's parents:
Robert Richardson Jago b: 1844 South Shields d: 1905 South Shields
m: 27 August 1870
Elizabeth Fry Hudson b: 1851 South Shields d: 1927 South Shields
(parents: possibly Robert Hudson and Ann Fry)
Children:  Robert Hudson 1880, Joseph 1881, Ann Hudson 1883 and Mary 1885.

Sarah Jane Younger Preston's past is a mystery.  But I can confirm that of the two marriage entries for Robert Hudson Jago that this is the correct wife from the memory of living grand nephew and niece.

I would like to know:

a)  Where Robert Snr and Jnr were 1901 and prior; and
b)  If we can find any trace of who Sarah Jane Younger Preston and Elizabeth Fry Hudson were.

Many thanks in advance,

Kirsten

Cumberland / Reay - John and William (Wrea/Rea)
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 23:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am looking to establish the origins of my William Rea below and have recently found a photo from what I think is the early 1880's of John Rea.  Although the photograph was taken in Scotland the back of the photo says Penrith and Uncle John.  It would have come down through the family through Christopher George Rea (my maternal great grandfather, who would have been the nephew).

I would like to know where John and William Rea were in 1841 please.  the following I know for sure that my William Rea (Reay/Wrea):

Married: William Wrea and Ellenor Waller 15 AUG 1819   Shap, Westmorland,
(This parish church is St. Michael and Shap is now now in "Penrith, cumbria".)

Died: REAY William  Aged 75  Sep 1866 Carlisle. Cumberland
Died: REAY Eleanor Aged 68 Dec 1870 Wigton, Cumberland

1851 Census Return for Carlisle (Crown Copyright Reserved)

Wilsons Court, Castle St, Cumberland (Carlisle)
William Rea    Head    53    b Scotland               Butcher
Eleanor Rea    Wife    53    b Orton, Westmoreland
HO107/2430 Folio 90

Children of William and Eleanor Rea:

1.   MAY REA  I could find no other listings of any sort for May.
Christening:  01 APR 1821   Saint Andrew, Penrith,
2.   GEORGE REAY  (DIED AGED 2)
Christening:  20 DEC 1824   Saint Andrew, Penrith, Cumberland,
                Death:  16 OCT 1826
3.   CHRISTOPHER GEORGE REAY  (this is my mat. g/g grandfather)
Christening:  25 APR 1824   Saint Andrew, Penrith, Cumberland,
4.   JOHN WALLER REAY
Christening:  25 FEB 1827   Saint Andrew, Penrith,
Marriages: JANE HOPE  17 APR 1849   Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle,
5.            WILLIAM REA
Christening:  18 JAN 1833   Saint Andrew, Penrith, Cumberland,
Marriages: Margaret Scott 19 MAY 1856  Raughton Head, Cumb
6.   MARGARET REAY
Christening:  04 JAN 1835   Saint Andrew, Penrith, Cumberland,      Marriages: John Hutton 29 JUL 1856   Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle,
(*** I have also fantastic photographs of this line)
7.   ELIZABETH REA
Christening:  07 JAN 1837   Saint Andrew, Penrith, Cumberland,
8.   JAMES REAY  (JIM)
Christening:  16 MAR 1838   Saint Andrew, Penrith, Cumberland,

If I am off on the dating of this photograph, then John Waller Reay above could be the Uncle John.

I really want to find out:

a)  Where William was in 1841;
b)  Who John Reay in the photograph really is; and
c)  If there is any link through these 8 children to the names Howard and Hutton in the other photographs I have. I have established the Hutton, Nicholson and Hogg connections but not the Howard line.

Many thanks in advance,

Kirsten

Lancashire Lookup Requests / All Census returns please: Julius Lowenthal
« on: Saturday 06 September 08 18:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

It is amazing what becomes available online if you leave it a couple of years.

I have been on the search for the elusive Siegmund Oppenheim and have found that he was linked to a Julius Lowenthal in business in Manchester.

In 1848 Julius is in Huddersfield York:

Gazette Issue 20824 published on the 11 February 1848. Page 27 of 48

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us the undersigned,
Heymann Engel and Louis Lowenthal, both of Hamburg, and Julius Lowenthal, of Huddersfield, in ihe county of York, as Woolstaplers, under the firm of H. Engel and Co., has been this day dissolved, so far a* regards the said Julius
Lowenthal, who retires therefrom.
Dated this 27th day of January 1848. Heymann Engel.
Louis Lowenthal.
Julius Lowenthal.

He then shows up having disolved another business:

THE LONDON GAZETTE, JANUARY 13, I860

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership lately subsisting between us the undersigned, as African Merchants, carrying on business in the city of Manchester, under the firm of Julius Lowenthal and Company, was dissolved on the 1st day of November last, by mutual consent.  All debts due to and owing by the said late firm will be received and paid by the undersigned Hermann Seligmann, and Meir Jacob Haarbleicher.- Witness our hands the 10th day of January, 1860.
Hermann Seligmann.
M. J. Haarbleicher.
Julius Lowenthal.

This trade of African Merchant is the same as my Siegmund Oppenheim at the same time.

He then turns up in the National Archives records have been naturalised and denizised (term?):

Naturalisation Papers: Lowenthal, Julius, from Hanover. Certificate 3138 issued 23 January 1860.

*** there is also aDenization and naturalisation record for a Julius Lowenthal from Mecklenberg Schewin (same birthplace as Siegmund's wife Adele - coincidence? in 1858 and I wonder if this could be the same person listing his birthplace as different places?

Naturalisation Papers: Lowenthal, Julius, from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Certificate 2600 issued 12 February 1858

He then turns up on the census in the same street that Siegmund Oppenheim lived and was in business under the same trade of Shipping Merchant:

1861
Chorlton Medlock
Ecclesiastical Parish: Christ Church
Folio: 53 Page: 9 Schedule: 44
Address: 264 Oxford St
LOWENTHAL   Julius   Lodger   U   M   29   Shipping Merchant    Overseas - Foreign - Germany Hanover
LOWENTHAL E Lodger U M 26 General Agent Overseas - Foreign - Hanover

He is also on the Manchester Exchange at the same time as Siegmund:

Slater's Directory of Manchester and Salford, 1863
Members of the exchange
Lowenthal, Julius, Cross Street

We then have the dissolution of their business:

THE LONDON GAZETTE, SEPTEMBER 9, 1864

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between the undersigned, carrying
on business at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, as Commission Merchants, under the firm of Oppenheim and Lowenthal, was this day dissolved by mutual consent.-
Dated this 23rd day of May, 1864.
Siegmund Oppenheim.
Julius Lowenthal.

At this time Siegmund does the denization and naturalisation process and in 1881, he is on the census for Lancashire living with his wife and four children. His wife is listed as Adele (born about 1851 Schwerin Mecklenburg).

I am trying to establish the following:

a) Where Julius Lowenthal was prior to 1861 on the census returns;
b)  Who E Lowenthal is that was living with him in 1861;
c)  Whether there is a chance that Adele who married Siegmund Oppenheim, could have been Adele Lowenthal.  I have no record of the marriage of Siegmund to Adele but their first child was born in Chorlton Medlock in 1872 and the couple remained in Manchester the rest of their natural lives; and
d) What became of Julius, ie. who he married, who his children were etc.

Many thanks in advance,

Kirsten Beach

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Help wanted confirming Newquay Photo
« on: Saturday 30 September 06 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I believe I may have tracked down a possible location for my mystery photo, which I had previously believed was in Manchester.

Our ancesters were textile merchants and it is possible that they visited Newquay on holiday or for business, which would explain the reason for this photograph.

the sign in the middle of the street scene shows a sign which says:

"Williams & Cox"

While researching all the possibilities, I came up with only two likely explanations.  The first was a firm of architects in London and this is clearly not a London street scene.  The second is a drapers in Newquay and I'm hoping someone recognises the street and can confirm it for me.

Torbay Household & Business Directory

WILLIAMS AND COX; 5 6 and Strand.

I'd also love to know if anyone can estimate a date for this photograph.

Thanks in advance for your time and effort with this.

Kind regards

Armed Forces / Help wanted identifying WWI uniform
« on: Wednesday 27 September 06 23:15 BST (UK)  »
 :)

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give me a clue as to what rank and regiment our great grandfather may have been in.  The photo dates from WWI and we are guessing it is infantry and British although we cannot find any trace of service records for him from www.pro.gov.uk.

Any help to solve the mystery of his uniform would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hertfordshire / ALLEN-JONES Family
« on: Saturday 23 September 06 19:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm searching for any information about the Allen-Jones family who lived somewhere called Little Bursteads, Little Hallingbury, Bishops Stortford.

If anyone can help me with any knowledge of this family or of the location I would be eternally grateful.

The story begins with our Mathilde (Milly) Oppenheim marrying the Rev. J Allen Jones in 1908.

They had a son (JE) who married at St. Mary's Sawbridgeworth in 1937.  JE and Margaret Allen-Jones had one son and two daughters.

J E Allen-Jones was in the RAF and earnt the titles Vice Air Marshall and a CBE.

Kind regards
Kirsten
