World War Two / WW2 Casualty List - numeric code query
« on: Monday 24 June 19 15:43 BST (UK)  »
Using the Army Casualty lists on FindMyPast I have found two records for one man. The numeric code on one (L1215/..) clearly links that record to an updated list. However on the updated list there is a code 582 which does not link back to the original list and it does not appear to link to a third list as list 582 is dated more than a year before the death in question. What else could it be? I've noticed a number of other entries with 581, 580 codes.

I've also seen the discussion at https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=780309.msg6345495#msg6345495

Europe / Switzerland - Familienschein - pdf or certified copy?
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently obtained two Familienschein from Zurich. One, early 20th century, came as a pdf of the original document, free. The other, 1880s, came as a certified copy, transcribed, and cost a fair amount. This document has less information - there is nothing on occupations, for example.

As I need to order some more Familienschein, I'm trying to figure why I've got documents in the two formats but can't see an explanation on the Zurich Zivilstandsamt website (I can read German to some extent). Can anyone enlighten me?  Also, am I right in thinking that the situation would be the same elsewhere in the canton of Zurich?

Stirlingshire / Stirlingshire Resources: new link - Poor Relief Indexes
« on: Friday 22 July 16 15:35 BST (UK)  »
A team of volunteeers at Stirling Archives have indexed Poor Relief records for 14 Stirlingshire parishes: Aberfoyle, Balfron, Balquidder, Buchanan, Callander, Drymen, Fintry, Gargunnock, Killearn, Kippen, Logie, St Ninians, Stirling, Strathblane. Records include General Register of Poor, Applications for Relief and Parish minutes, for the period 1814-1934. The actual records indexed and the period they cover varies by parish. There is a pdf index for each type of record in each of the 14 parishes.

Orkney / Walls Kirk Session records, 1837-1865 - index
« on: Monday 09 February 15 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
I've indexed the Walls Kirk Session records 1837-65 and added to my website. There are a very few mentions of people from Flotta too. Main content is misdeeds of various sorts, new communicants and a very small number of baptisms.

Occupation Interests / Merchant Navy - CR1 card - Rating query
« on: Thursday 11 December 14 10:27 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to make out what is written opposite Rating on this CR1 card. Is it MS (Merchant Seaman?)  or M3 (3rd mate)?

Also, the reverse of the card states "previously apprentice" and it is stamped 1935. As the person in question was 21 then, would that be relatively old to have moved on from apprentice status?

London and Middlesex / Hammersmith Parish Infirmary Death Register query
« on: Thursday 03 April 14 10:17 BST (UK)  »
First time I've used this source and I'm puzzling over what seem to be initials after the cause of death in several cases.  Could they have been the initials of the doctors who certified the deaths as they seem to be repeated?  The 'Pyloric stricture' is the person I'm particularly interested in.
