Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Matilda Perkins nee Wakeham
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Matilda married Thomas Perkins on 13 July 1845 at Clifton Bristol.  Her father's name was William Wakeham.  By Q2 1846 when their daughter Leah was born they were living in Heaton Norris, Stockport, Cheshire.  By 1851 Thomas was a widower.  My problem is where was Matilda born and where did she die.  In fact other than the marriage I have no information about the Wakehams.

In 1841 Thomas was living in the Castle Precincts area of Bristol and there was a Mary Wakeham age 20 living in Prince Street in the same area who was born in the county.

Reference Library / SIT few new users?
« on: Saturday 22 January 11 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
Why are fewer new users posting their surnames?

The statistics for the last year seem to indicate that proportionally fewer users are adding their surnames to the SIT.   Is there some reason why new users don't add their details?

The number of surnames always used to be greater than the number of rootschat members.

Canada / Godliman- Munro - Novia Scotia
« on: Friday 10 December 10 15:47 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone any thoughts on the following?

James Godliman born 1812 in Ickenham England married Catherine Munro who was born in Nova Scotia c1818, probably in Nova Scotia.  Their first child Elizabeth was born in Ickenham in 1838.  His brother John Godliman born 1808 in Ickenham was a soldier who died in Nova Scotia in 1832.

I have details of them and their parents in England but nothing about the Canadian end nor how they travelled there and back.

The Common Room / Errors in the 1858-1941 Will Calendars
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 09:54 BST (UK)  »
As a result of these coming available on Ancestry I have commenced a more general surname search than was possible using the calendars in record offices.

As a result I have examined a few dozen entries and I have already found two where people were shown as bachelor or spinster where I know that they were not.

One was a divorcee.  The others estate was administered by his niece who actually was also his step daughter.  Presumably due to irregularity of the marriage she was shown as niece.

However it does seem that the marital statements in the calendar are guessed by the person drawing up the calendar particularly in the case of administrations where there was no will to provide correct information.

One Name Studies: A to G / Edlin in Leics and Lincs and NZ
« on: Monday 05 July 10 22:50 BST (UK)  »
As the original one name thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,129116.0.html

has been locked for sometime I have decided to open a new one.

Can I suggest that those who are interested identify their link into this family and how far back they have managed to get.

I have no specific link with this branch of Edlins but do have large tree back to 1580 in Denton and I am aware of the collection of information from wills which show possible links back to William Edlyn born 1490.

My own interest is a one name study of the Edlin family worldwide.

Australia / Arthur ROUTLEDGE to NSW
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 23:02 GMT (UK)  »
In 1901 Arthur Routledge, born 1873 West Derby Liverpool, was a shipping clerk living wiith his wife Alice (born 1877 Shrewsbury) at 42 Windsor Street Toxteth Park.

I can't find him in the 1911 UK census

In 1915 he joined the army at Woolwich.  His papers show that he was a shipping clerk living at 18 Alphonse Road Kirkdale with a wife Winifred Ann Kelly who he had married in NSW in June 1911.  His papers also show that half his pay should go to his wife now living in Australia.

He was invalided out of the army in March 1917 suffering from bronchitis.

My problem is whether I am dealing with the same person?  When and where did his first wife die?  Who travelled to Australia and back to the UK and when?

Any help would be appreciated

WINIFRED'S name corrected

Australia Lookups completed / Ballarat - Ann JOHNSON - James HOUSTON
« on: Thursday 11 March 10 14:54 GMT (UK)  »
Ann Johnson married James Houston in Ballarat in 1860.  His first wife Ann nee Henderson died in November 1859, leaving at least three children.  James was an engineer but also a comedian who later made this his career in Glasgow.

Ann Johnson was born in Eton England in 1839 and was still there in 1851.  Her parents died in Eton in 1855 and 1859.

They had a daughter Ann Johnson Houston in 1860 in Ballarat but were back in the UK certainly by 1863 when their second daughter was born in Glasgow and probably by 1862 when James is said to have performed in a music hall in London.  They possibly married in Ballarat in 1860.

Ann Johnson possibly travelled to Australia on the Herald in June 1859 but that was an unassisted passage and she came from a labouring family.

My problem is can anyone give me any real facts about Ann Johnson, her journeys to and from Australia and her marriage and the birth of her child in Ballarat.

Lanarkshire / Ann Johnson in Glasgow?
« on: Wednesday 10 March 10 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
Ann Johnson was born in Eton Wick in Buckinghamshire in 1839.

According to an ancestry public tree:

She married James Houston who was born 13 Dec 1828 Glasgow son of James Houston and Margaret McTurk.  James died 22 Jan 1892 and Ann died 14 Apr 1912 in Glasgow.

From what I can see of census records his wife Ann was certainly born in England.

I am a complete novice with regard to Scottish Records.  Can anyone please help me to prove whether James married my Ann Johnson.

Buckinghamshire Completed Look ups / Love BATCHELOR - COMPLETE
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 22:40 GMT (UK)  »
This seemed a suitable subject for 14th Feb.

The marriage of William Child and Ann Batchelor was covered in:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,119070.0.html

In 1841 William (38) and Ann Child (36) are living in High Street Uxbridge and with them is Love Batchelor age 75.  Love died 16 Dec 1849 age 79 and was buried at St Martin's Ruislip presumably dying at their bakers business which by then had moved to Ruisiip High Street.

My valentine problem is finding Love.  Was she Ann's mother or another relation presumably from Chesham, Amersham or Missenden?
