Wiltshire / William WILTSHIRE 1798 Seend Wiltshire
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 22:31 BST (UK)  »
I have a William Wiltshire born abut 1798 in my tree. A later census shows him as born near Devizes, he is living in Birmingham at the time of the census with his wife Charlotte. I have visited the Wiltshire records office some time ago and the most likely William Wiltshire I found was in Seend, Wiltshire baptised 1797 with parents William and Rebecca. Does anyone else have this family in their tree - if they do and they know what happened to that William Wiltshire I can rule him out of my search.
Any clues would be gratefully received.

Montgomeryshire / Elizabeth REES - Llangurig
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
My gt gt grandmother was Elizabeth Rees born about 1835 in Llangurig Montgomeryshire in North Wales. I only have this detail from later census records. She married William Thomas Cornford in 1862 in Islington London and had her family in London.

Her marriage record shows her father's name as Richard Rees and his occupation as farmer.

Does anyone else have any connections that might extend this information. Or know if Llangurig parish records are available on line or to purchase.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / London Inquests
« on: Thursday 19 March 09 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
Is it possible to obtain details of coroner's inquests in London? I have a death certificate for George William Lakeman who died at The Albion, 211 High Street, Shadwell on 27th April 1912. The death certificate was issued after an inquest on the 30 April 1912.

I would be interested to know if it is possible to obtain details of coroner's inquests. The name of the coroner was Wynne E Baxter - the Coroner for the County of London.

Any advice would be welcome.

Europe / GERMANY Grimme - would this be a German immigrant?
« on: Sunday 14 October 07 13:38 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors include the name Grimme living in the Bethnall Green, Spitalfields, St Marylebone areas of London.

The earliest occupation records I have show Charles Grimme born about 1817 in Westminster London to have been a tailor. I believe his father John was also a tailor. I do not know if John was an immigrant or if he was born in London.

Has anyone else come across this name in the early cloth trade records in London - and do you think it likely that they may have been immigrants from Germany?

Dublin / William Wiltshire born 1859 Birmingham
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 14:44 BST (UK)  »
I am keen to know if anyone else is researching the family of William Henry Wiltshire who was born in Balsall Heath Birmingham in 1859. He married Emma Kerr and at some time in the late 1800's or early 1900's emigrated to Dublin. in 1909 they lived in St David's Terrace Dublin.

We believe he worked for Avery Scales and that his work took him to Dublin. They had a son William Henry also born in Birmingham in 1884. He died in WW1 fighting for the Canadian Expenditionary Force. He had other brothers - possibly born in Dublin but we have no record of them.

Wiltshire / Wiltshire family in Devizes or Bishops Canning
« on: Wednesday 11 April 07 09:54 BST (UK)  »
I have a William Wiltshire shown in the 1851 census living in Birmingham as born in Devizes abt 1798.

I have looked at the parish records at the records office and can find no Wiltshires in St John's parish and a few in St Mary's but not in the right date. There are also a few in Southbrook but again cannot see the right name and close date.

However there are many Wiltshires in Bishops Canning but I could not see a William Wiltshire in the book around the right sort of years. William was already in Birmingham in the early 1820's as this is when his children were born and he married a Birmingham girl - so I presume they married in Birmingham although have not yet found record of that marriage.

When looking through the parish records I was also looking for names that appeared amongst his children to see if I could spot any family links but could not see anything obvious.

Does any one have any suggestions as I appear to have found a brick wall.

Armed Forces / Eric Bryning - Loyal North Lancashire Fusiliers
« on: Thursday 29 December 05 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have the obtained a copy of the medal card for Eric Bryning from the National Archives.

This shows he received the Victory and the British Medals. It does not show any 'Theatre of War' or any dates. Does this mean he did not serve overseas. He did survive the war. It also gave me his regimental number.

Is the National Archives the only place I can get more information on this gentleman?

Thank you for reading my post.

Armed Forces / Orson Rose - Royal Navy
« on: Thursday 29 December 05 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
Someone from another board has suggested I post on this board as there are many knowledgable people who may be able to help me. I have two persons to ask about and will keep them in two different posts.

I have got from the National Archives site some records relating to Orson Rose who served in the Royal Navy from (I think) February 1877 until he was 'discharged with disgrace' in April 1879.

He served aboard HMS Impregnable 21 Feb 1877 to 3 March 1877, HMS Implacable 4 March 1777 to 20 Dec 1878. From 21 Dec 1878 he was on a boat the name of which I cannot read but it looks like it ends with 'taur' or 'tain' the beginning looks like 'Min' - could it be 'Minotaur'.

It was from this boat in April 1979 that he was discharged to Malta prison. He was moved a short time later to what looks like Winchester Gaol. We already knew that in 1881 he was in Devizes Prison in Wiltshire - but we had not known what for.

What is the easiest way of me finding out more detail - will I need to visit the National Archives.

Thank you for reading my post.
