The Common Room / Help needed with ancestor called John Elphick
« on: Friday 06 October 23 17:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I hope I have posted this in the right place!    I am looking for information on one of my ancestors.  I am trying to find out who his wife was.   His name was John Elphick and he was born in 1510 in Eastbourne, Sussex and died in August 1572 apparently in Chiddingly, Sussex.  Their son relevant to me was Edmund Elphick, born 1545 in Sussex.   I have seen many different versions of his wife for example, Elizabeth/Eleanor Sidney, Eleanor Taylor, but I cannot make any sense of it, various birthdates are given as 1510-1523 and born in Seaford Sussex or Penshurst, Kent!

Many thanks :-)

Norfolk / Bacon family of Thurgarton
« on: Sunday 05 July 15 14:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

I am looking for information on the Bacon family of Thurgarton.  My ancestor was Margaret Bacon who married a William Spurreln back in early 1600s.  Does anyone know anything about a link between the Bacons of Thurgarton and the Bacons of Baconsthorpe - are they related in anyway?

Hi everyone

I am trying to trace the birthplace of my above ancestor.   He was born in about 1735 and died in Berwick St John, Wiltshire, UK on 6 August 1786.   I cannot find any trace of where he was born.   I have tried Ancestry, but cannot find anything on him.   Where can I go next?   I am wondering if he could have been born in Ireland?    His wife's name was Mary James (who was probably born, definitely married and died in Berwick St John) and they were married in Berwick St John on 11 May 1758.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Norfolk / Bacon and Spurrell family of Thurgarton, Norfolk
« on: Wednesday 15 October 14 13:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I am trying to find out about 2 of my ancestors of the 2 Norfolk families that were joined in marriage with the marriage of William Spurrell (born 7 December 1595) and Margaret Bacon (born 10 February 1594) (both of Thurgarton) in the 1600s.  I understand that they were some kind of gentleman farmers and they have some kind of pedigree.

Does anyone know anything about these pedigrees or about them.

Thank you and kind regards  :)

Hi

This is my great grandfather somewhere in France during WWI.   As you can see the picture is quite moth-eared and not that clear, but any help would be great - especially colour!   Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / John Goldsmith and Hannah Thorpe of Sussex/Kent
« on: Tuesday 29 April 14 20:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I am new here.    I hope someone can help me.

I am a member of Ancestry.co.uk and I have come to a grinding halt regards to my great, great, great grandfather John Goldsmith, born 1797.   His wife was Hannah Rose born 1803 in Lichfield, Staffordshire where they married on 12 March 1820.

On census for him from 1851 he has his birthplace down as Penshurst, Sussex, UK - but on the 1861 he has it down as Catsfield, Sussex, UK.    Penshurst is actually in Kent but quite close to the border with Sussex.    During these census John and Hannah where living in Ashford, Kent.

What I am trying to find out is who John's mother and father are.   It confuses matters by there being another John Goldsmith who was married to a Philadelphia Relf or Stone.   On the census he is also down as being born in Penshurst in 1798 but also in Chiddingstone.   There is a birth record for a John Goldsmith for 1798 in Penhurst, father being John Goldsmith and mother Ann, but is this for my John or the other one?

I have looked at the Public member trees (which I know can be unreliable) and most people have put down my John as having parents called Hannah Thorpe (born 1777) and John Goldsmith (born 1769).

The confusing thing is that a smaller number of people have mentioned Hannah Thorpe as being the mother of John (married to Philadelphia).

It seems the 2 John's have been muddled up both because of their same names, near birthdates and birth place of sometimes being Penshurst!

I hope this is not too confusing.

Any help much appreciated!!
