My mother has told me that as a child she was told by her maternal grandmother about a nun in the family, but it isn't one that I have as yet been able to find. An Irish Catholic with the surname McGarry.  I contacted the Catholic FHS and there does seem to be several likely candidates, but need more information first.

My mother has a photograph of the nun, passed down to my mothers Aunt, and after her death given to my mother when her uncle was sorting out his wife's belongings. So I am hoping  for your helping in trying to extract information from the photo that might help me narrow my search. Is it possible to tell what order she belonged to, or maybe an approximate date?

thanks

The Common Room / Composing a letter to contact a newly found distant relative
« on: Friday 26 December 14 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
Having gone back a few hundred years I am going forward to flesh out my tree, as you can imagine some of the branches fizzle out. It would be nice to make contact with some distant relatives to share stories

I believe that I have found my mother's 2nd cousin, who will be 90 next year, and is the last in her grandfather's line (she'd unmarried childless and outlived her siblings). I am contemplating writing a letter to make contact, partly so she knows she has distant family but also to exchange stories - it would be nice to have what she knows recorded for prosperity but I can tell her about the fascinating life of our common ancestor as I've got a lot of information from papers and directories.

The question, really, is what to put, to not overwhelm or scare her by an unknown stranger suddenly contacting declaring themselves a relative. I have an address and phone number but want to put a short letter in with a SAE to introduce myself.

Dublin / Co(o)gan, help required finding birth
« on: Sunday 21 December 14 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing back the Cogan branch of my family and so far have it back to James Cogan b. about 1826. He is down on various census  as born in Dublin. I have just recently confirmed his marriage in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England and purchased a copy the 1848 Marriage certificate (married St Albans Catholic Chapel), though surnames are spelt Coogan. His father is Thomas Coogan a Yeoman.

There are a few James Cogan's born around then, but can't see one with Father named Thomas. If his father was a Yeoman, maybe there's a tenancy agreement (not looked into that yet)

« on: Saturday 20 December 14 14:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I'm looking for a MICHAEL NOLAN in the Macclesfield Electoral rolls prior to 1861.

I have Michael in the 1861 census living at 11 Townley Street, but not before.

My interest is Ann Nolan on her marriage license in 1848 she puts residence as Townley Street, Macclesfield and fathers name Michael Nolan occupation a Weaver. There was a mill on Townley Street.

Cheshire / Finding a Marriage in Macclesfield circa 1850
« on: Sunday 16 November 14 21:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the marriage of James Cogan and his wife Anne that most likely takes place around 1850 in Macclesfield. James ogan was born abt 1826 in Dublin, Ireland but his wife Anne was born in Macclesfield abt 1828.

Their first son, John Cogan, was born in Macclesfield in 1852, and so I am surmising that its likely they married in Macclesfield, but so far have been unable to find it.

I have most of their lives after this time which may give a better picture. James Cogan was a Cabinet Maker and James and Anne moved to Staffordshire (their 3rd and 4th children baptised in Hanley in 1856 and 1858) and he was listed as Furniture Dealer in the 1860 Post Office Directory, though Cabinet Maker in 1861 Census. He moved to Leeds by the time of his 6th child where he lived for the rest of his life, living in Merrion Street and having actors and actresses board with them. Sadly after he died in 1898 his wife Anne ends up in Leeds Union workhouse.

I haven't found them in 1851 census, but that might be if their records haven't survived. so wondering where to look for marriages (nothing on BMD/ancestry/FindMyPast that seems right) or where to go for electoral registers.

Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / Wellington 1821 Census look-up
« on: Thursday 28 August 14 16:00 BST (UK)  »
I have a Peter Chilton & wife Ann (nee Pritchards) who lived in Wellington and moved to Dawley at some point. I'm not sure what districts the Wellington census covers but I would appreciate a look up.

So Peter  Chilton (b 1777) and wife Ann (b 1778)
Their children
Mary (b. 1800), Peter (b. 1807), Fanny (b 1814), Henry (b 1817) and Eliza (b 1820).

I have Ann as a widow in 1851, and two possible Ann Chilton's in 1841 (still to clarify which is correct)

Thanks.

Nic

Shropshire / Where is Spout near Little Wenlock?
« on: Tuesday 26 August 14 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Currently looking at 17C/18C Shropshire registers. There seems to be more than one family of "Chilton's" based in around then. In the combined parish register of Little Wenlock some of the entries describe the person as coming from the Spout. Would this be somewhere that is now Spout Lane, or is there another meaning of "of the Spout"

e.g.
1742 - Rowland Chilton of the Spout was buried
1747 - John son of John and Mary Chilton of y Spout was bapt {privately march 16 publicly April 11}
1749 - Mary daughter of John and Mary Chilton (of y Spout) was bapt

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Witness name on marriage licence
« on: Friday 08 August 14 10:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking to identify the first witness name on a marriage between Peter Chilton and Ann Pritchards in 1796.

Its John (something?) and its the surname I would like suggestions for.  Possibly Hewlitt, but not sure

The second witness, Richard Brazier, gets married on the same day to Mary Garbett (Peter's grandmothers maiden name is Garbett, so could be likely Peter & Mary are cousins (still to confirm)).

Just wondering if I can get any connection for the first witness  :)

Shropshire / 18thC sources to supplement Registers
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering what other sources, apart from BMD & Registers can be used for people from 18thC Shropshire? (My query is at the end, but first some background)

I have subs to ancestry & FindMyPast so things like page scans of shropshire registers are great source.

I have got my tree to Peter Chilton & Mary Cadman marrying in 1772 in Little Wenlock, and surmising that the correct Peter Chilton is the one born in 1749 in Little Wenlock (still to find the correct Mary of proper age yet :) ), whose parents are John & Mary.

I believe this is John Chilton and Mary Garbet, because the witnesses at Peter & Mary's wedding were Richard Chilton & Thomas Garbet. The problem has been in looking for the siblings of Peter (1749). Peter was baptised Aug 1749, however on the same page there is a "Mary daughter of John Chilton and his wife Mary" baptised December 1749. So its probably safe to say that in Little Wenlock at that time there were two John & Mary Chilton.

So what other sources do people use to try and confirm who belongs to whom in such cases?
