Australia / Using "Digger" discs
« on: Monday 11 August 14 03:29 BST (UK)  »
I am considering purchasing a new computer which will be a 64bit. I have a set of "Digger" Index cd's and know that they will not work in 64bit.

I have found a website selling software called BDM Revival which will read all the discs on a 64bit computer and was wondering if any of you are already using this ???

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Help please with researching in Gibraltar
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 02:22 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering where I could look to find a birth for the daughter of a soldier in Gibraltar in about 1830?

He is Edward O'Garr who was a corporal in the 47th infantry of foot. Date of death was 21st July,1838

Daughter is Mary O'Garr and I found her in the 1841 Census aged 10 and living in the Royal Military Asylum Chelsea (research on this institution shows it was more like a school rather than what we might think for an asylum). Presumably living there because of the death of her father.

Mary's marriage certificate here in Oz shows the name and date of death of her father, but she stated mother's name unknown. She also states she was born in Gibraltar.

I can't find her birth in England so any suggestions about Gibraltar would be appreciated.

Europe / Help please searching for Russian ancestors
« on: Monday 28 April 14 05:32 BST (UK)  »

I am trying to help my friend with researching her Russian ancestors. She has details only as far back as her grandfather who was born in Kharkov,Ukraine in 1873. He with his wife and family came to Oz from Harbin about 1928 and remained here, so we have their details after arriving in Oz.

I have exhausted all the usual avenues for research and can't find any Russian records. I found some for Russian/Jewish people, but they were not Jewish.

This is my last hope before admitting defeat. ::)

Wiltshire / Does anyone live near Dinton,Salisbury?
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 06:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I live in Oz and am helping a friend who is researching his Pomeroy family in England.
His father came to Oz in 1926 and his address on the Passenger List was Pound Cottage,Dinton,Salisbury

His father was then 16 years of age and came here unaccompanied. He never spoke of his family in England, so it is a mystery to us as to why he would come here.

We would really like to know whether Pound Cottage was then a farm or perhaps school? Also is it still there?

Any help appreciated

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Wedding Certificate help please
« on: Wednesday 19 February 14 00:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Have been trying to decipher the maiden surname of the mother of the groom on this certificate.
The family thought it might be Bowden.  However, where the Priest has written "Rites of the Roman Catholic Church" it looks like it might begin with an R. -  Rowden.

then again the word Bachelor seems to begin with something similar.

We would like to try to clarify it for searching in Ireland. Look forward to your thoughts on this one

Limerick / Help with researching in Limerick please
« on: Tuesday 19 November 13 03:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

My friend and I are beginner to try to trace her Irish ancestors and would like some help with understanding the Townlands etc.

She has all the records in Oz so no help needed there. We are looking for a Catherine Hayes born about 1800 with parents Patrick Hayes and Mary Hayes. Death certificate here in Oz in 1857 states Catherine was born in Parish of Ballyhahill, County of Limerick married to a James Connor at age 21 and 3 years in colony of Victoria prior to her death. Information on certificate supplied by her Irish born daughters in Oz.

I want to look on Griffiths and the Tithe applotments etc, but am getting totally confused as to which Parish etc.

I went online and found the following for Ballyhahill

Ballyhahill
Civil Parish:   Kilmoylan
Diocese:   Limerick
Barony:   Shanid
Poor Law Union:   Glin
Catholic Parish:   Shanagolden & Foynes

then on another site I found something totally different. I seem to be going around in circles.

Any advice appreciated ;D

Australia / Latter Day Saints images online
« on: Sunday 22 September 13 03:49 BST (UK)  »
I might be a bit behind the times with this and someone might have already posted on this.

Last week I discovered this on the LDS website. Nearly all of these have been put on the site this year.

www.familysearch.org

Select Australia and New Zealand then have a look at what is in the Historical Records Collection.
Most of the entries with a camera icon will take you to the actual image of the record. No payment required.

The Tasmanian Civil Registrations 1803 – 1933 are fantastic because you get the image of the actual wedding certificate etc, which you can save or print.
Over 73,000 images here, so ideally you need know the Registration number and year of the event and there is no Search for names facility.

Australia Lookups completed / *COMPLETED* Help with Tasmanian wedding certificate
« on: Monday 16 September 13 02:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I hope someone might know what this means. The marriage took place in 1895 in the Parish Church - St Pauls Church Launceston, Church of England. The groom was 30 and the bride was 27. So both of "full" age. Groom was a bachelor, bride was a Spinster. Minister was The Rev. Hampton Christie, Senior Curator St. Johns Launceston. Marriage in the Parish Church according to the Rites and ceremonies of the Church of England by Licence of Surrogate Hales.

Hopefully someone will know what " Licence of Surrogate Hales" means.

There is a possibility that the bride was Catholic but I can't find any records to prove that.

Devon / Pomeroy Reunion ?
« on: Friday 30 August 13 05:19 BST (UK)  »
A friend of mine here in Oz is intending to visit the UK next year (2014) and we have found on the internet that there have previously been Pomeroy reunions held in Totnes, at the Berry Pomeroy Castle.

Would anyone know where we can find out if another reunion is planned next year?

We have searched on google, but haven't come up with anything so far

thanks
