Dublin / South Dublin Workhouse - Admissions form 6 - Disability Codes
« on: Friday 27 December 19 00:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the DOWLING family who entered the South Dublin Workhouse on 19-APR-1847 - the attached is an excerpt from "Form 6":
- 2134 - father RICHARD 50 widower,
- 2135 - daughter MARY 13,
- 2136 - son MICHAEL 10

Column 8 is headed "If disabled, the description of disability" and down the list are various entries for others stating "No 1", "No 5", "No 6", "No 7", etc.
The Dowlings are all 3 shown as "No 7".

The list of columns is as follows:
1   Number
2   Names and Surnames of Paupers
3   Sex
4   Age
5   If Adult, whether Single, Married, Widower, Widow; if Child, whether Orphan, Deserted or Bastard
6   Employment or Calling
7   Religious Denominations
8   If disabled, the description of disability
9   Name of Wife or Husband
10   Number of Children
11   Observations on Condition of Pauper when admitted
12   Electoral Division and Townland in which resident
13   Date when admitted or when Born in the Workhouse
14   Date when died, or left the Workhouse

Does anyone have any explanation for these "DISABILITY CODES", please?
Bearing in mind this is for SOUTH DUBLIN, the Workhouse.org site does not assist in this case!!!

Armed Forces Resources / Norman Cross POW Depot, Yaxley, Huntingdonshire 1796-1815
« on: Sunday 28 October 18 01:37 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone found any information regarding the Norman Cross POW Depot, near Yaxley, Huntingdonshire during 1796-1815?

I have found:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Cross
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/43487/43487-0.txt
https://archive.org/details/depotforprisoner00walkuoft/page/n9

but little else (as yet) on the Internet.

Norman Cross was built in late 1796 and was managed by the "Royal Navy Transport Board".

I am specifically trying to determine a possible "VICTUALLER" to the Depot and I am starting to think that this research will come to nought.

My ancestor was John TOWNSEND, thought to have been connected with the Royal Navy and was reported in Census and other sources as a Victualler. He married in Yaxley in 1804.

I've just discovered that it is possible that one of my ancestors:
 1. Could have been in the British Army and
 2. Could have been stationed in Huntingdonshire in/around Yaxley during the period 1800-1810

Is there any way to determine which Regiments were located in that area during that period of time?

Living in Australia, it is a bit hard to pop into Kew to browse the WOs!!!!

Thanks!

Armed Forces / At what age did the British Army accept enlistees in 1800-1840?
« on: Friday 08 September 17 07:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Everyone!

One of my 2GGrandfathers died as Edward COMBER in Armidale, NSW on 31 July 1900.

Anecdotal evidence shows him born 1820 in Spitalfields, and alternatively, 1816 in either Ireland or Dorset!

Other anecdotal evidence reports him as being enlisted in the British Army, and thought to have been in the 50th Regiment of Foot (then the "Queen's Own" and subsequently the "Royal West Kent" Regiment).

My main question for this forum is - "how young would the British Army accept as enlistees?".

In order to fit Army enlistment into the data I currently have, Edward would have had to have been, at the youngest, 10 years old. It would be more appropriate for him to have been 18 years old or so. The 50th was in Australia in 1837 to 1841 (so if he was born 1820, he would have been 17) and no doubt he would have been one of those soldiers shipped to NSW as Convict Guards.

However, if Edward enlisted in Britain or Ireland, how young would he have been allowed to be in order to enlist?

Thanks, in advance!!!

Of course, if anyone in this forum has an Edward Comber (or Coomber) in their tree who married in Sydney in 1851 an Elizabeth Mackey b1831, I'd love to connect!!!

Thanks, in advance!!!

Hi Folks!

I am hoping someone may be able to push my research back another few generations!

I am looking for any information about an ELIZABETH GOWER, who was born around 1801 in Swansea, Glamorganshire. She married JOHN THOMAS in Swansea about 1824.

I have a copy of the 1861 Welsh Census which shows both John & Elizabeth living in LLANGYNWY, he a Labourer, she a Wife, with son William (bc 1840 - a Mason).

However, I have no confirmation of a Birth, Baptism, Death or Burial, or details of their parents, for either Elizabeth or John, and I am hoping that someone can assist with those details to help me!

The Common Room / One Family - Baptisms in multiple Parishes
« on: Sunday 25 November 12 04:55 GMT (UK)  »
My particular ancestry is in Leicestershire, and I am tracing one family - William Tilly (also Tilley, Tillie, etc.) who married in 1790 Elisabeth (also Elizabeth, etc.) Bates in Burton Overy.

I have already found 2 children baptised in Burton Overy

When I search William in the FamilySearch.org database, with wife Elisabeth, the search pulls up a number of children for Burton Overy, Leicestershire, and some for the Langtons (Church Langton, Tur Langton, etc. - referred to as East and West, Langton).

My question is - is there any reason that a family located in one town (Burton Overy) would get their children baptised in two (or more) Parishes (Church Langton)?

Thank you!

England / Ferrers and Turville families in England c1400s
« on: Sunday 19 August 12 04:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a link between the Ferrers family - specifically Helen/Ellen FERRERS bc1473-1484 (b Tamworth, Staffordshire) dc1508 - and the Turville/Turvile family - specifically William TURVILE bc1472 (b Newhall, Leicestershire) dc1549-1552 (d Aston Flamville).

My question is against any possible descendants!

I believe Helen and William had 2 sons, John and Michael.

I believe John m Mary FINDERN and they had 16 children, one of whom is Geoffrey TURVILE bc1524.

Geoffrey is thought to have had a daughter Maria bc1540 in Thurlaston, Leicestershire.

Maria is thought to have married, in 1561, a John MARSTON bc1535.

If anyone has any information on these people, I would appreciate hearing from you!!!

Thanks in advance,
