The Common Room / Missing Father!
« on: Monday 22 August 16 14:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I have a real poser here about my real father. I'm 71 now and found out 50+ years ago that the man on my birth certificate was not my biological father. I met my wife 50 years ago, we married and have 3 daughters, and they were and are my priority so did not bother looking. A few months ago my youngest daughter who is now 43 said you should look, so that my daughters and grandchildren knew who they were related to. I have an older sister who lives by me and I've never wanted to bother her or upset her, but plucked up courage and had a long talk with her.
She told me knew my father and his name, but at 11 years old at the time she didn't take any notice. As far as we can make out he was at a USA Military Hospital in Wiltshire, but we don't know if he was an American as he was called Jock, so maybe Scottish. Also he had red hair (Ginger) and a beard.
I was also shocked finding out that my mother's sister who was married had a son by another person and was put up for adoption. I know this is correct as my aunt was ill in hospital and had a letter and got her daughter my cousin to read it; it was from the child who she had adopted. She got very upset and begged my cousin not to tell anyone which she didn't until she told me a couple of months ago. My aunt died in the late 80s, but she can't remember the address on the letter as it was destroyed.
Back to my sister, she told me that my aunt had a daughter by an American, who was at the same location as Jock. Sadly my cousin died when she was 38, but her sister found her birth certificate a few months ago with no father entered. Whether her sister knew about her father we don't know, she was married and had two daughters. My aunt had 2 children who died at birth in the 1940s.
My mother died in the 80s and would have been 108 this year, so I would think Jock would have died also. But maybe he was a soldier and died in WW2. I don't know.
I've been researching my tree since the 1980s and have 5000+ in it, so I have a bit of experience at researching.
Anyone got any idea how I would get info on Jock?

The Lighter Side / Keep Searching!
« on: Friday 05 August 16 13:21 BST (UK)  »
I had been searching for my cousin for years, without success. All I knew was her parents had died and she had lost her husband, he died in France. So I thought she may be living there.I had not seen or spoken to her since the early 1950s. But being a male I messed about with my mobile phone and lost most things, so I found an old archive on my computer and cleaned it up before putting on my mobile. While looking through it I found my cousins name and address, plus phone number!.I think I got it when 192.com gave a free week and I searched for relatives then, but did not contact any of them.I thought will I ring the number or not, but after a couple of hours I rang it. Low and behold my cousin answered, I told her who I was etc and she remembered me and had loads of info. We talked for an hour. I had mistakes in her mothers side of the tree, I had her mother dying in 1996 but she died in 1990. Why couldn't I get it right her mother my aunt had married again, so I put all that right. The sad thing is she is wheelchair bound and is registered blind, I wanted to send her a copy of our tree but at the moment I don't know if someone cares for her who could share it with her. She was excited I rang and she enjoyed the info we exchanged. I told her that her niece and nephew in Australia wanted me to find you, she said her mother had gone to Australia in 1990 and spend some time with my cousins brother(He died 1999). Another terrible thing is my aunt died in 1990 a few weeks after she returned from Australia. I received photos and info from her niece and nephew yesterday, so I've go another 30 people to put in the tree.
So keep going, the brickwall will fall one day, with luck.

Morning,
I'm looking for any info on my Uncle George Oliver Middleton 1901-1961 and his wife Alice Violet Victoria Fidler 1906-1996. They lived in Newbury, I think he was a postman when he died. They had two children, their son went to Australia where he died. I'm in contact with their grandchildren in Australia, but they have no info as they were born in Australia. I've been doing my tree since the 1980s but George etc are still a mystery.

The Common Room / Birth/Death certificate
« on: Wednesday 15 April 15 23:00 BST (UK)  »
Been into my tree for years but I've come up on a problem. A relation had 3 children die in the 1940s,I would think they all died at birth. But I have one of them has birth details but with no death details. I thought I would get a birth certificate to make sure he was born to the right family. I filled in the form but when I put in the page number it wouldn't except it as the number was more than 6 numbers. The number is 135/6473/s. I now think this may be a still born baby and the Birth & Death are linked. There is know one from the family alive so know one to ask. Anybody come across this.

Australia / Anthony I B MIDDLETON
« on: Monday 25 March 13 11:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
For a long time I have been searching for the death & grave of my cousin Anthony I B Middleton born 1929 Swindon Wiltshire UK. He came to Australia in 1952 on the ship passenger list he gave his status as 'Army Recruit'. He was heading for Melbourne. Doubt if he was in the British Army so maybe a recruit in the Australian Army. I've been told by his younger brother that he thinks he died aged 31, so around about 1960. His brother is the only family member left and that is all he knows, as he was living with my grandmother at the time as their mother died when they were very young. I've been searching through all the online cemeteries but found nothing. He may have still been in the army at the time of his death, if so he may have died overseas. I've traced all the members of his family except him. If anyone could help I would be grateful.

Hi,
I'm trying to help a friend in Australia find her grandparents who lived at one time in Billesdon. This is what I have been told so far. Her grandparents were James Arthur Smith & Sarah Smith nee White they were married 1907 in Melton Mowbray their ages were recorded as James 24 & Sarah 23. James's father was John Smith  deceased, Sarah's Father was James White (Showman). James & Sarah had the following children

James Arthur born 1905 married Molly Short- 1 son  (2nd marriage Olive May Wathan)
William Henry born 1907 married Francis Williamson- 1 son 1 daughter
Violet born ?
Edith born ? married Idris Short- 2 daughters
Norah Margaret born 1922  married John Wathan Davies 1939- 1 daughter(me) 4 sons my friends mother was Nora
James Smith died in Billesdon in 1922 aged 43 his occupation was Travelling Showman, abode Temporary Yard Queens Head.
My friend says she thinks James Smith was born in Newcastle.
Once again (we all get this) the ages don't tally. 1907 he was 24 so c1883, when he died in 1922 he was 43 so c1879. If my maths are right.
I'll post this in the travellers section as well.
