Australia / McLeod/MacLeod - 1856/7 ship from Liverpool to Melbourne
« on: Monday 11 June 18 04:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm looking for information on passengers on a ship named 'McLeod' or 'MacLeod' that arrived in Australia (Melbourne) in 1856 or 1857.

I haven't been able to find the arrival of one of my ancestors, but I do have this lead on a possible travel companion. Benedetto CRAMERI was listed with my ancestor, Pietro VASSELLA, in a publication in Switzerland (Poschiavo) in October 1856. In essence, it was a notice that said they were emigrating and all were invited to settle debts. Poschiavo is a very small town, so it's possible they travelled together.

Pietro was naturalised in Sydney and the document states he arrived there 'via Melbourne in 1856' - no details of the ship unfortunately. I believe I found Benedetto's naturalisation in Victoria and it states he was from Poschiavo and arrived in Australia in 1856 on the 'MacLeod' from Liverpool. My assumption is that they may have travelled to Australia together, so I'm trying to find information on the 'MacLeod'.

I can't find any records for this ship on PROV or Ancestry, but have found a reference in the Age newspaper on Trove. It shows the 'McLeod', a ship from Liverpool (14 Dec), arriving in Melbourne (Hobson's Bay) on 10 Mar 1857, with 137 passengers in steerage. Given the October 1856 notice, I believe they must have left in 1856 and arrived in 1857, so this could be their arrival.

Does anybody know of any resources (online or otherwise) that might give me some information about the 'MacLeod' and it's passengers? Or somewhere else I should ask this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ross

Hello, All,

I've previously posted about ancestors from Losone, Ticino that I'd like to get more information about (see post called "Losone, Ticino, Switzerland - ZANOLA Family puzzle" - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=744604.0 ).

This is them from the 1817 Church Census from Losone:
Antonus ZANOLA.....50
Maria........................35
Joanna Maria............8
Maria Jacoba............5
Joannes....................1

I'm waiting for some more Church records to arrive, but I've also found another source that may be my best bet for the information I want. The State Archives of Ticino in Bellinzona list the following resource is available (see http://www4.ti.ch/fileadmin/DECS/DCSU/AC/AS/Documenti/ricerche_genealogiche.pdf):
Census of 1824 - recorded, both for men and for women, the name, surname, date of birth and the name of both parents.

Can anyone suggest how to obtain the 1824 Census information to further my research? Unfortunately, travel to Switzerland isn't an option and I don't believe the Archives undertake research for this sort of thing.

Thanks,
Ross

Europe / Losone, Ticino, Switzerland - ZANOLA Family puzzle
« on: Wednesday 23 March 16 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am researching an ancestor family from Losone, Ticino, Switzerland and I'm having trouble reconciling what I've found in Church records.

The father is recorded as Joanne Antonius ZANOLA or similar, but the mother's name seems to be recorded in the Church records differently at various times (see marriage, children's baptisms and death record summaries below):

Year     Record      Name of Mother/Wife and her father
1807     Marriage    Joanna, daughter of Stephani MAGISTRI [of Solduno]
1809     Baptism     Joanna, daughter of Stephani MAGISTRI [of Solduno]
1812     Baptism     Joanna Maria, daughter of Stephani ZERRI (maybe CERRI like below if badly written)
1816     Baptism     Maria Joanna, daughter of Joannis CERRI [of Solduno]
1820     Baptism     Maria Joanna, daughter of Stephani MAGISTRI [of Solduno]
1852     Death       Joanna, daughter of Joannis CERRI [of Solduno]; widow of Joannis Ant. ZANOLA

There is only one ZANOLA family that I've been able to find in Losone and list below seems to link the family and births. The 1817 Church Census lists:
Antonus ZANOLA   50
Maria            35
Joanna Maria      8
Maria Jacoba      5
Joannes           1

A cousin of mine suggested Joanne Antonius ZANOLA may have married 3 times to a MAGISTRI, then a CERRI, then another MAGISTRI. However, that doesn't explain the Joanna ZANOLA nee CERRI death record.

Can anyone see a pattern or possibility that explains the situation? Is there some link/translation/relationship between the CERRI and MAGISTRI surnames that means they could actually be the same person?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Regards,
Ross

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Some Latin words in Baptism record
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have the attached Swiss baptism entry in Latin that I'm trying to translate/confirm my interpretation.

My current attempt (uncertainties are numbered and highlighted in the attachment):

In the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirtieth, day tenth of February, <1> Dominicus COFTA of <2 - place name?> baptised baby was born (male) yesterday of Joanne Baptista <3 - of?> Jo: Baptista VASELLA and Dominica <4 - of?> Jo: Baptista RADA, legitimate partners of this <5 - guessing Parish??>, whose name is given Petrus Franciscus. Sponsors (godparents) were Benedictus RADA, mother's brother, and Dominica <6 - of?> Dominici GODENZI.

I have a number of questions that I'm hoping someone might be able to answer. Using the numbers in the highlighted sections of the attachment:

<1> - Just not sure what this means - maybe a title?
<2> - a place name?
<3, 4 and 6> - The next names are their father's names, but I wondered if the symbols are short for 'of' or do they also indicate 'son of' and 'daughter of'. Are they a shorthand for something?
<5> - just guessing this means Parish. Can someone say what the 4th and 7th letters that look something like an 'e' really are? That might also modify how I've spelt some of the Baptista names above as they also seem to have that letter.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Kent / William BEECH born in Kent, England
« on: Tuesday 24 June 14 04:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I’m trying to find details for William BEECH and/or his parents in England. He was born in Kent according to the records I have and his parents were George BEECH and Annie SIMMONS according to his death record.

I started this topic: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=688772.0 on the Australia forum, trying to find details at that end that might help identify them in England. So far, they have been very elusive.

I have the following details from records I’ve obtained:

Source: Birth Record, Eliza BEECH (daughter), 24 Aug 1871
William BEECH, Labourer, 37 years old, born in Kent, England
Married 25 Sep 1856 in Port Stephens, NSW to:
Margaret CASSIDY, 34 years old, born in Sligo, Ireland

Source: Birth Record, Mary Ann BEECH (daughter), 17 Aug 1859
William BEECH, Bullock driver, 27 years old, born in Kent, England
Married 1855 in Stroud, Port Stephens to:
Margaret CASSIDY, 23 years old, born in Sligo, Ireland

Source: Death Record, William BEECH, 16 Apr 1901
William BEECH, Farmer – died at Ma Ma Creek, QLD
Age: 47 – this is definitely an error on the record; newspaper notices say 67, and his children are on this record with the eldest being 44
Born in Kent, England - 45 years in Australian Colonies
Married at age 22 in Port Stevens to Margaret CASSIDY
Parents: George BEECH, Laborer, and Annie SIMMONS

Source: Marriage Record, William BEECH and Margarett CASSIDY, 25 Sep 1856
Date Married: 25 Sep 1856
Place Married: Church of Saint Johns, STROUD
Religion: Church of England
Name: William BEECH
Conjugal Status: Bachelor
Occupation: Bullock Driver
Name: Margarett CASSIDY
Conjugal Status: Spinster

For both:
Birthplace: NOT LISTED
Age: NOT LISTED
PARENTS NOT LISTED

Any suggestions/assistance to find details for them in England would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ross

Australia / Arrival in Australia – William BEECH
« on: Tuesday 03 June 14 13:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I’m trying to find details to help track William BEECH (one of my 2nd great grandfathers) back to England. I thought his arrival information might provide a clue if I could find it (no luck so far).

I have the following details:

Source: Birth Record, Eliza BEECH (daughter), Aug 1871
William BEECH, Labourer, 37 years old, born in Kent, England
Married 25 Sep 1856 in Port Stephens, NSW to:
Margaret CASSIDY, 34 years old, born in Sligo, Ireland

Source: Death Record, William BEECH, Apr 1901
William BEECH, Farmer – died at Ma Ma Creek, QLD
Born in Kent, England - 45 years in Australian Colonies
Parents: George BEECH, Laborer, and Annie SIMMONS

I’ve found birth indexes on NSW BDM for 2 children born there (1857 in Wide Bay registration district, and 1859 in Dalby registration district). As an aside, does anybody know where those districts are? They seem to have moved to QLD around 1860 with the rest of their children born there.

I’ve assumed that William arrived in NSW around 1855-1856 by himself, but haven’t been able to find arrival records or details from UK Census records to link back to England.

Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ross
