Westmeath / Another child, but what became of her?
« on: Thursday 08 February 24 07:36 GMT (UK)  »
I’ve periodically been working on my husbands tree. He’s of Irish ancestry.

Great grandfather was Michael Maher, who married Mary Gray (she occasionally uses the maiden name O’Hara in her children’s birth registrations. I’ve had several posts on Rootschat about their family. Here are a couple of them.

Since that first original post, I’ve confirmed the following children for Michael and Mary.

Mary (Molly) b1909 Mullingar, died 1980
Rose b1911 Mullingar, died 1989
John Joseph b1914 Mullingar, died 1915
Teresa b1916 Mullingar, died 1962
Michael (Mick) b1918, died 1999
Catherine/Kathleen, b1920 died 2008
Bridget b1923  died 2003
Christopher b1926, died 2004
Annie b1930, died 2022

All apart from John Joseph died in England.

A couple of days ago, on irishgenealogy.ie I found another child - Mary, born 1922 in the County Hospital, Mullingar.

My husband grew up knowing his great gran and reckons she had about 10 children, and “one or two” died young.

I cannot find a death for a young Mary, or if she didn’t die as a child, any marriage I’m happy that is her,

Can anyone find her? I’m about to go to work, but will pop in, so to speak, periodically.

United States of America / Minnie Woodman nee Kackley death or divorce
« on: Tuesday 23 January 24 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
Would SKS be able to find a death or divorce for Minnie Woodman, nee Kackley.

Minnie was born 1881 in Ohio, the daughter of Joseph Kackley and Laura Starr. Minnie marries George Henry Woodman in December 1900.

George seems to go on to marry a Mamie Ferrell in 1918 in Arkansas. I have found the deaths of both George and Mamie, but cannot find out what became of Minnie.

If anyone could help, I would much appreciate it.

Armed Forces / HMHS Maine - how did she get to Korea?
« on: Friday 21 July 23 20:58 BST (UK)  »
This is not, strictly speaking, a genealogy question, but as there are some knowledgeable people on here I thought I would give it a try.

I’ve recently obtained my fathers Royal Navy records - they took about three weeks to come through.

Most of the time he did not seem to be at sea - the majority of his career seems to have been spent in shore establishments or naval hospitals.

However, he did serve on HMHS Maine during the Korean War. I have a few photos taken during this period. He went to Rome, Malta, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Sasebo in Japan along the way (or way back).

Is there any way of finding out the route the ship took, either there or on the way back?

He also seemed to have obtained discharge by purchase. I assume he bought himself out. It seems rather sad, his wife had disappeared to America with anither man at the time, maybe buying himself out of a promising Navy career (he’d reached the rank of Sick Berth Petty Officer by then) was a last ditch attempt to save his marriage.

Armed Forces / DM/X as part of service number
« on: Sunday 11 June 23 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone enlighten me as to what D/MX means in front of or as part of a service number?

I was thinking of applying for my fathers records - he was in the Royal Navy, and on some documents I have, this is written. I also have a photo of him with what looks like a kit bag, and the same letters and numbers are on the bag.

Just wondering if I needed to quote these letters as well as the numbers on the application.

United States of America / Maurice Hyland
« on: Sunday 04 June 23 11:19 BST (UK)  »
A ships list has a 25 year old Maurice Hyland leaving Queenstown in Ireland for New York in 1902, on board the Oceanic.

I can’t find him at the other end, having tried Ancestry and familysearch. The only likely candidate, age wise, in the USA 1910 and 1920 census, has an immigration year of 1882.

Can SKS see if they can locate him?

Mum knows I have scanned this and is happy for restoration to take place.

It doesn't need a lot doing to it, a tidy up, spots removed, if anyone would like to do this.

thanks
Lisa

The Lighter Side / What history!
« on: Sunday 08 January 23 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
My mum has just given me a pile of old newspapers and magazines, including coronation programmes from the Queens coronation, her fathers coronation. There was also a paper published on the day after the war ended, and a souvenir paper from Princess Mary’s wedding. Lots of other old papers and magazines, I need to sort through them properly.

I always remember my gran talking about Princess Mary, she said the poor girl never smiled again after she was married to Henry Lascelles.

What amazing pieces of history  :)

The Common Room / Finding the bride without a surname
« on: Thursday 15 December 22 15:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to discover the name of the second wife of Francis Phipps Targett. They appear together on the 1901 and 1911 census, her first name is Sarah.

They marry in July 1895 in Brighton. Other names listed on the registration are Lucy Bisshopp and Porter Williams, who are together in the 1901 census.

Everywhere I have looked - Freebmd, Familysearch, Findmypast and Ancestry -  the registration has just the three names - Lucy, Porter and Francis, but there's no mention of Sarah.  Francis and Sarah don't seem to have had any children so that is another closed route.

Would Brighton marriages be online anywhere?  Other than buying the certificate, I have drawn a complete blank with this one.

Thanks
Lisa

Gloucestershire / Florence Woodman
« on: Friday 04 November 22 09:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can Rootschatters help me find Florence Woodman?

Florence’s birth is registered December quarter 1891 in Chipping Sodbury. She’s baptised In January 1892 in Wick, daughter of John, a labourer, and Mary Jane (nee Knight). It’s the second marriage for John, first wife Flora, and a child, die in 1880.

Florence appears with John and Mary Jane and a 15 year old sister, Ellen, in Siston, Gloucestershire in the 1901 census. John appears to have moved up in the world as I think he is now a farmer - 09/2347/8/41.

John and Mary are together in 1911, in Warmley, Bristol, with a 19 year old daughter, so about the right age, but called Frances! There’s also a grandson, 9 year old Albert George William.

I cannot decide whether Frances is Florence, and cannot find what happened to her after 1911. Can anyone find her?
