Armed Forces / Policeman in the Boer War
« on: Tuesday 23 August 11 12:45 BST (UK)  »
My GGG uncle Robert Wilcocks Bearne was a police sergeant in London Tooley Street, but his police service record is interupted between 1899 and 1902 with a hint that he was transferred to the Army. He then returns to Tooley Street.

Before becoming a policeman he was a midshipman in the Royal Navy. Probably not relevant.

I have found a different R Bearne in the Boer War service records.

Does anyone have any knowledge of what a policeman would be transferred to the Army for?

Armed Forces / Britsh Forces in Canada 1870s
« on: Friday 10 June 11 14:55 BST (UK)  »
After 9 years I have finally broken down a brick wall.

Walter Beswick Berridge ( my gg uncle) born 1848 disappears from the English records after the 1861 census.

By accident I have found his marriage as Walter Beswick in 1876 in Halifax Nova Scottia. This led to finding him in the 1871 Canadian census in Quebec. He is a soldier listed amongst 29 pages of other soldiers. No other information.

He reappears in the 1891 Canadian census, with his wife and 2 children born in England in 1876 and 1887 so he should be in the 1881 English census but none of the family are.

I am therefore assuming that he was still in the army until he returns to Canada in 1890.

So that I can try and find out more about him does anyone have any thoughts as to which regiments were serving in Quebec in 1871 and Halifax in 1876?

Thanks

Armed Forces / Boer War Handkerchief
« on: Sunday 22 August 10 23:26 BST (UK)  »
I put this up for general interest, although if anyone can add anything I would appreciate it.

I am assuming it is Boer War 1900-1901, due to Buller's time there.

I particularly like the tricycle mounted machine gun bottom right.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / WW 2 photo date and info please
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 17:56 BST (UK)  »
This has turned up in a friend's family photo box. They would like to know why it's there so date and location would help.

It is postcard sized and printed on thin paper, but not cut out of a publication. It looks as though it was printed as you see it.

Of course, if I could read the what looks like Janapese writing on the back all may be revealed.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Old velum scrap
« on: Friday 06 August 10 13:35 BST (UK)  »
I am having an old bible rebound and this scrap of velum was used to reinforce the spine.

If it is comtemporary with the Bible it is Elizabethan.

My questions are:
1. Can anyone date it?
2. Can anyone confirm it is Latin?
3. I know it is too small to decipher but can anyone make out any words?

Thanks

Nottinghamshire / Walter Berridge - Brick wall
« on: Monday 29 March 10 14:55 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to break down some of my brick walls.

My GGuncle Walter Berridge was born Feb 1848 in Long Eaton. His parents Eleanor Berridge and John Beswick married the following year and lived in Sutton Bonnington.

I have them as a family in the 1851 and 61 censuses with Walter now being known as Walter Berridge Beswick. I then lose him completely - no death, marriage or emigration that I can find.

He could be using Berridge or Beswick as his surname.

Anyone got any ideas?

The Lighter Side / Different ways of looking at things
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 11:32 BST (UK)  »
It just all depends on how you look at some  things...

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy  researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own  family tree. She discovered that Congressman Harry Reid's great-great uncle,  Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in  188 9. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.

The only  known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows  in Montana  territory:
On the back  of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus  Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887,  robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted  and hanged in 1889.'

So Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid  for information about their great-great uncle.

Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the  following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

"Remus Reid  was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to  include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with  the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life  to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the  railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the  renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an  important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was  standing collapsed."

NOW THAT's how it's done, Folks!
