Cheshire Lookup Requests / 1871 Census Look-up Alfred Dodd
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 17:03 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone kindly look up Alfred Dodd on the 1871 census?
He was with his family in the Northwich area in the 1861 Census RG 9/2602, aged 7 years.

So far I have been unable to find him.
Many thanks.

Hi Everyone,
I would be grateful for a look up in 1851 Derbyshire Census for a family , who were living in Stoney Middleton in 1853 when 2nd daughter Roseanna (Rosina) was born.

Their details are :

Thomas Hamson      b 1816 Bolton? Lancashire - later census occupation, silk weaver.
Ann Hamson ( wife)  b 1814 Nantwich, Cheshire
Emma Hamson daug b 1850 Derbyshire

I have been unable to progress any further back with this family than the 1861 census, when they were living in Spout Street, Leek, Staffordshire. The name is difficult, and may be transcribed as Hampson or similar.

I cannot find them in 1851 Census of Macclesfield, Cheshire ( maybe it has not yet been transcribed) Their son Thomas was b 1847 in Macclesfield. I cannot find them in the 1851 Leek Census. Thomas junior was still in Leek in 1871 with wife Ellen and family.
Thomas junior’s son, also Thomas, was born in Leek in 1874 and subsequently ended up in Collyhurst, Manchester, Lancashire where he married my grandmother.

So from Lancashire to Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and back to Lancashire I am stumped after many years of searching.  ???

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Trinity Light House Buttons- How old?
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 20:18 BST (UK)  »
I found some old brass buttons which I assumed were from an army uniform.

On closer inspection they have a Trinity Light House Service inscription around the edge on a band like a belt, with a buckle at the base. A crowned lion in the centre is holding a sword.

The 4 large matching brass buttons are in bright condition. Although they all have a welded shank, they do not have the same maker on the backs.

One is made by E.W Jackson. 58 Gracechurch Street.
Two are by Shaw 11, Royal Arcade, Pall Mall, London.
The final one is by Doughty & Co 103 St Martin's Lane.

I have 2 small bright brass buttons also with Trinity Light House Service inscription, miniatures of the large ones. These have a welded shank and are made by Doughty & Co.of London.

A further large button which is more bronze in colour is by Hinks Wells & Co Birmingham. This does not have the Trinity inscription on it. This button is a little more worn and has some Latin wording which is difficult to read. It has a  a crowned Lion with a Unicorn facing each other, both holding a shield in the centre, with a crown on top and a small lion above that. The shank is made separately.

I also have 2 medium sized buttons with a rope rim and lined background. Made by Firmin & Sons 153 Strand, London and Conduit Street. They have a welded shank.

I have no idea if these buttons belonged to any of my ancestors. It would help if they could be dated, I know it is very difficult to identify these things sometimes.

I would be grateful for someones input.

Lancashire / HELP Harriet Ann or Harriet Jane Parker?
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 17:47 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone kindly help unravel the mystery of Harriet's middle name.

I have found her on 1861 Census of Wainfleet St Mary's in Lincolnshire, as 13 yr old Harriet J. Parker. (b 1848)

Also on 1861 Census of Wainfleet is John Parker, wife Susan, plus dau. Eliza Parker aged 11yrs who I presumed was her sister and witness at Harriet and William's wedding.

On the IGI Harriet Jane Parker b 6 Nov 1848 Wainfleet. Daughter of John and Harriet Parker! Death date 31/3/1927

I have the marriage certificate of Harriet Ann Parker to William LLOYD  5 Feb 1871 at the Albert Memorial Church, Collyhurst, Manchester. Father John Parker, farmer.

On each census form after 1861 Harriet is not given a middle name. She was born in Sibsey, Lincolnshire.

I have a burial record for her as Harriet Jane Lloyd buried 31/3/1927 at Manchester General Cemetery. Buried with William Lloyd, Frederick Boucher son -in- law, and grand-daughter Olive Parker Boucher.

Could the name on the marriage certificate be incorrect, or have I the wrong person altogether?  ??? ???
