The Lighter Side / Tithe Records
« on: Thursday 19 January 23 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1840 Tithe schedule for Wimbish in Essex, for our cottage and garden under the heading, Alias it has           cf, Tyehach 1381,ct[/b]       could someone please tell me what this means.
On the copyhold for our cottage and garden, it mentions that the annual rent was 8pence/year by ancient rights.

I was also wondering if the year 1381 when the ancient's rights were granted?

The Common Room / Margaret H Sargeant Adopted
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Margaret H Sargeant was adopted by widow Martha Maud Hassett between 1920 and 1924.

Margaret birth to Nellie Sergeant was registered at West Derby, Lancashire, England in 1920 Q2. Her surname was  changed to Hasset. Margaret and Martha emigrated to Canada in 1924 when she was aged 4.50 years.

Would there been any adoption records for Margaret?

Can someone please try and find to see if she was adopted.

Canada / Who was the father
« on: Friday 03 July 20 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Margaret Hassett age 4 years 6 months immigrated to Canada in 1924, her mother paid for the passage and states that she was ADOPTED and was born in Liverpool.
She was accompanied by Martha Maud Hasset.

They were destined to stay with Miss Fanny Henderson who lived in Toronto.
Martha was the sister of Fanny, Martha had married a William Hassett in 1914 he was killed in WW1 in 1918. So Martha was a widow when she went Canada

Margaret “Hassett” later married a Charles Jameson in Canada.

Was she really adopted she could had been the daughter of widow Martha and father unknown.
With no access to marriages and births in Canada I cannot find what her maiden name was entered.

Lancashire / Grandmothers birth certificate required.
« on: Monday 15 October 18 17:04 BST (UK)  »

A cousin of mine wants to get an EU passport as we believe our grandmother was Irish her mother was Mary Jane Hamilton born in 1856 in Belfast. We cannot find a birth cert for her as she was illegitimate.
My grandmother Elizabeth Hamilton was born in Lancashire she is on the 1881 Census in Over Darwen aged 1 granddaughter in Hamilton family. I have not found a birth cert for her. Her birth date in Family Bible and 1939 Census is 14 May 1879.
Daughter Mary Jane Hamilton aged 24 on the 1881 census could be the mother, as Elizabeth is down as granddaughter on the 1881 census?
Mary Jane Hamilton married John Nuttall on 8 September 1883 at The Belgrave Square, Independent, Meeting House, Darwen.
If John Nuttall is the father why did he wait 4 years to get married?
On the 1891 Census John and Mary Jane are living in Islington, London, Elizabeth Nuttall aged 11 is living with them.
Elizabeth married James Mackness in 1898 giving her father’s name as John Hamilton.
On 4 of her children birth certificates her maiden name is Hamilton her 4 remaining children she changed her maiden name to Nuttall.

I have an old Prayer Book inside I found a Troop Berthing Card with the passengers Deck, Section and Mess Table written on it.

The ship was used to evacuate Singapore in 1942.

I know it a very long shot but is there any way of finding who the owner was.

London and Middlesex / White Conduit Street
« on: Wednesday 07 February 18 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My grandmother and her Edinburgh family lived at 16 White Conduit Street, Islington for about 30 years up to 1901. I have got the photograph which shows the children going towards Chapel St.
No 1 is on the left at Chapel St and 14 is the pub on the corner behind the children.
Was 16 on the right hand side and are there any old photographs of the street.
