Lancashire / The 'four and twenty gentlemen' of Ribchester
« on: Sunday 26 June 22 15:19 BST (UK)  »
In 'A History of Ribchester' by Jonathon Shortt and T C Smith, the authors talk about an old custom in the towns of Ribchester, Goosnargh, Preston of having a group of 'sworn men' who would act to 'help and counsel the mayor.'  They state that, 'The records of “the gentlemen and four-and-twenty" of Ribchester are preserved for an unusually long period. From 1650 down to the present day, with but few intermissions, the churchwardens' accounts and the minutes of “the gentlemen” are contained with much fulness ; and are also in an excellent state of preservation.'
However, they do not say where these records can be found!
I am interested in the Seed families in Ribchester, and wonder if these records might prove a useful resource.
Has anyone come across any information concerning this group and their records?

Lancashire / Farming north of Preston
« on: Saturday 05 September 20 16:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am writing up my family history research and would like more information about the lives lived by folks farming in the Claughton/Garstang area between Preston and Lancaster in the 1750's-1840's.  Are there any relevant published histories that anyone could recommend?

Australia / Builder came for work 1880's
« on: Saturday 05 September 20 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
I'm looking for ideas on how I can find out more about my G Grandfather Richard Henry Catterall b. Preston 1860. The family story is that he went to Australia for several years to work as a builder and make money so that he could marry his fiancee, who waited patiently for his return! The story was that he worked on the Sydney Harbour bridge, but, since that was opened in 1932, the dates don't fit - unless there was another bridge somewhere? He was at home in Preston, Lancashire at 1881 census, and married in Preston in 1889, so I guess he would have been gone between those dates. Does anyone know if there would be any records of temporary workers in this period? Ship passenger lists? Any other ideas?

Anglesey / Seed - Prichard family
« on: Sunday 30 August 20 15:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am researching my Preston Seed family and realised that family stories of Anglesey connections derive from the marriage of Matilda Seed from Preston to Richard Prichard in 1886. Matilda came to Anglesey as a teacher and is found boarding as a school mistress in Holyhead in 1881.

I am curious as to how this girl from Preston came to be teaching in Holyhead. Any ideas?

A great nephew of Matilda's Robert Ward Seed died age 6 'suddenly' at the mountain, Holyhead in 1919.  I'd like to see if there is a newspaper report about this - does anyone know whether there were any English Language newspapers in the area?

Family History Beginners Board / Frederick Stewart Seed b. 1846
« on: Monday 28 October 19 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
Any help/suggestions appreciated in tracking down this ancestor who disappears after 1891 census.

He was born St Helier, Jersey 3 May 1846, appears with parents, Thomas and Amelia on  1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 census as a portrait artist, photographer living around Bristol/Hereford, 1891 living  alone Princes Place Clifton, Bristol.
Mother died 1888. Father died 1895.
No sign of Frederick on marriage, death indexes, subsequent census.
I'm wondering if he might have gone abroad.
Any way I can check this?
Anywhere else I can look?

Many thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / St Helen's Garstang burials?
« on: Friday 06 September 19 11:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I would like more information about a grave in St Helen's, Churchtown, Garstang grave yard.
I believe Thomas Seed age 85 was buried there in 1839, and his wife Ann age 85 in 1842.
Lancs opc have the name on the grave as William Seed, but I'm fairly sure that there has been a mistake, either at time of burial, or in later transcribing of the record.  All details apart from the first name are correct, and there is no William Seed death in registers for this time/place.

Does anyone know where I can find information about the grave or an MI?
(Assuming there is a stone)
Many thanks.

Lancashire / Hospital in Samlesbury??
« on: Thursday 20 December 18 16:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am researching a Seed family of Garstang/Preston area. Parents Robert Seed and Jane Seed died within 6 months of each other in 1860/1861, leaving 8 children between ages 2 and 15.  Robert died in Kirkland, Jane in Preston. A son, William James Seed died the same year age 6 in Dec 1861 in Samlesbury (according to death cert.).  The informant of death on the certificate was the attending physician.I have found no family connection with  Samlesbury, so cannot work out what this child was doing there! I wondered if there was a hospital to which he might have been sent?
Any thoughts?
