South Africa / Johannesburg death certificates
« on: Wednesday 28 December 22 00:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, is it possible to see a death certificate from as recently as 1984? The person concerned died in Johannesburg on 3 May 1984, and I’d like to know his parents’ names if possible.

Armagh / John Adams of Lisadian
« on: Tuesday 17 September 19 10:28 BST (UK)  »
I've tried without success to find the death record of John Adams, farmer from Lisadian, who would have died between 1851 and 1854.

I also am unable to find his marriage record to Mary Ann Wallace (whose father was John Wallace, farmer) born about 1830 -31. Mary Ann's second marriage as a widow (Mary Ann Adams, father John Wallace from Lisadian) was to Thomas Sinclair in 1854 at Newry Register Office.

I would be very grateful for any help. :)

New Zealand Completed Requests / Christchurch cemetery - Ruru Lawn
« on: Wednesday 03 October 18 08:27 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how to find the plots at Ruru Lawn cemetery? I have the Block and Plot numbers, but was unable to locate the actual grave site when visiting. Is there a sexton or anyone who can help? It doesn't help that some gravestones have gone or are illegible.

Staffordshire / occupation on census - legibility
« on: Sunday 15 July 18 23:20 BST (UK)  »
The 1841 census for Ann Alleack (Allcock) born about 1806 in Staffordshire, with her husband Wm and children. I am having trouble deciphering the writing for their trade/profession, so would love some help please.
Also the 1851 census for Thomas H Alcock born about 1826 in Shelton, Staffordshire, along with his parents William and Ann, and siblings. I can't read the occupation for Thomas.
Many thanks.

Staffordshire / John Alcock, father of Thomas b 1850 Hanley
« on: Tuesday 10 July 18 07:53 BST (UK)  »
Now that I finally have details of Thomas's 1874 marriage, I know that his father was John Alcock, deceased, Tailor. It was an RC marriage in Preston, Lancaster County.
So far I have been unable to track John Alcock. Thomas was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, but lived in Preston. The only possible John Alcock from the 1851 census was a cordwainer (the others were publicans or bricklayers), which is loosely associated with sewing perhaps, albeit shoes. However his son Thomas was born in Leigh, Staffordshire, which looks to be not very close to Hanley which was the birthplace of my Thomas.
Any help gratefully received. :) (Not sure if I should be posting this in Staffordshire or Lancashire!)

New Zealand Completed Requests / occupation 'teamster'
« on: Sunday 17 June 18 10:48 BST (UK)  »
I just wondered what 'teamster' as occupation might mean in 1918 in NZ? Would it have meant 'driver' of a vehicle or a team of animals?

Lancashire / 1851 census Thomas Alcock b1805 occupation
« on: Friday 15 June 18 20:04 BST (UK)  »
The 1851 census for Thomas Alcock born about 1805 in Manchester, with his wife Sarah born about 1809 in Yorkshire, along with Thomas's son Thomas  and wife Maria and other family members - I am having difficulty in reading the occupation for Thomas senior. His son was a gilder, and daughter-in-law Maria was a painter. Is it potter? But then I can see a word that looks like farmer.

Lancashire / Thomas and Ann Alcock from Preston
« on: Friday 15 June 18 01:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi, just wondering if anyone can help please with tracing Thomas Alcock's parents? (I have his children.) He was born about 1849 in Hanley, Staffordshire, and died 1 Aug 1932. I'm also interested in his wife's parents - Ann Mulligan born about 1849 in Preston, Lancashire, died in 1895. I think Thomas and Ann married in Preston in 1874.

I just wondered if anyone has access to the relevant Parish Register please? Not sure which Parish it would be. I'd like to know any details at all about Jane if possible. She was born about 1834. Thanks :)
