Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Where was Jane in 1851???
« on: Friday 13 January 06 19:07 GMT (UK)  »
I know some folks like a challenge, so thought I would post my query.

My whatever times great grandmother was Jane ASHWORTH. She was born about 1767 (where, I don't know other than probably in Yorkshire). Her husband James, a carpet weaver, died in 1837. I don't have her 1841 census entry, but most of her offspring were in the Liversedge/Heckmondwike area at the time.

I have a burial record from January 1852 stating she was buried at Birstal and is described as "widow of  James, carpet weaver of Heckmondwike. Aged 85 years. There is also an entry in the BMD index for a death registered in the march quarter of 1852, which ties in with the burial record.

So just a few months earlier in the 1851 census, she just does not seem to appear. I thought she may even have remarried, but she is buried as ASHWORTH so don't think that would be the case.

Any ideas anyone?

Yours hopefully
Martin

New Zealand Completed Requests / Yorkshireman death in New Zealand
« on: Sunday 25 December 05 23:25 GMT (UK)  »
Merry Christmas all,

Having never done any research in this area, I am appealing for any help regarding the following: I have a record of a distant relative of mine who died in New Zealand and wondered if there was anything further I could glean from any online internet source?

The last I knew of this man was in the 1871 census for England when he was an 18 year old butcher residing with his parents in the Bradford area of Yorkshire. The next thing I find about him is that there is a monumental inscription in a local churchyard in Bradford that reads:

<snip> Also of Gent ORMONDROYD, the son of Amos & Ann Ormondroyd, who died in New Zealand May 9th 1899, aged 35 years.

Am I likely to find out anything further? such as when he went to NZ, where did he live and die in NZ? Any information most welcome

Best wishes
Martin

Roscommon / Mary Ann FRYER b. 1831 Boyle, Ireland
« on: Thursday 13 October 05 23:06 BST (UK)  »
Having just discovered my 3 x gt grandmother was Irish, I suddenly find myself not able to progress any further.

I know she was born about 1831 in Boyle, Ireland. I have her in the UK census from 1851 onwards in various places but eventually settling in Liversedge, Yorkshire.

I also know from her second marriage that her father was called Michael and he was described as a stonemason.

Am I likely to find anything further on her from any Irish records? Any help, guidance or assistance would be greatfully received!

Thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1901 Census mystery - Can you solve it?
« on: Tuesday 11 October 05 21:03 BST (UK)  »
Using the 1901 Census extractor programme, I obtained the following BENTLEY entries:

Residing in the parish of Heckmondwike:
John BENTLEY 51 Aerated Water Agent Heckmondwike
Myra BENTLEY 29 Heckmondwike
Walter BENTLEY 1M Heckmondwike

So, armed with this info, off I goes to the 1901 online census and as if by magic, the family just do not appear! I have tried all sorts of different methods of searching, leaving out ages, last names, first name etc., etc, but can find absolutely no trace of them. ???

A Blue Peter badge is on offer for the first one to come up with an answer! :P

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1841/51 Census HILTON - Heywood, Lancs
« on: Friday 07 October 05 21:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi List,

I am desperately seeking further info on my 2 x gt grandfather Thomas HILTON. He was born around 1835/6 in Heywood, Lancashire. According to his marriage certificate, his father was Joseph, a miner.

I have record of him from marriage in 1856 right through to his death in 1918

Thomas was in Yorkshire by the time of his marriage, right through the rest of the census years, but I cannot find anything further back, so I am assuming he is in Lancashire with his parents.

If anyone can find him, I would be very grateful.

Thanking you in advance

I am interested in ANY information regarding the BENTLEY surname originating from the West Riding of Yorkshire area. Information I gather is being published on my website and already contains thousands of entries relating to census, baptism, birth, marriage, death, monumental inscriptions, trade directories and much more.

So, if you have a Yorkshire BENTLEY in your cupboard, please pay me a visit:

Happy hunting!
