Technical Help / RDBMS files to Windows 11
« on: Wednesday 27 March 24 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have inherited a number of files produced on an RDBMS system.  Is there a way of converting these for use on a Windows system?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John Willie Robinson / Brighouse / 1899
« on: Saturday 09 March 24 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
In researching Alderman John Aspinall Robinson [1833-1902] a quarry owner in Brighouse,  I came across a newspaper report of an accident at the quarry in 1899 in which a John Willie Robinson (described as son of the owner aged 35) was killed.

I know Alderman Robinson had a son called James William Robinson [b 1865] who would be about 35 years old at this time, but James William was still alive in 1911.  So who was John Willie Robinson?

You can see the full details in relevant newspaper report at

calderdalecompanion.co.uk/x619.html

I haven't been able to find any other reports or information about John Willie and wondered whether Rootschatters can help throw any light on the mystery

Technical Help / Labels in WORD
« on: Wednesday 10 January 24 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
I handle a number of address labels with WORD.  Is there some way of moving the following labels up (to close the gap) when I delete an address?

Thanks in advance.

Lincolnshire / What is the Bail of Lincoln?
« on: Sunday 02 April 23 10:08 BST (UK)  »
I have encountered a Seely family who lived at 11 Bail of Lincoln in 1871.

Can anyone tell me anything about the Bail of Lincoln?  Was it a street or an institution?  Is it still there?

Technical Help / Calderdale Companion
« on: Sunday 22 January 23 12:03 GMT (UK)  »
For several years, my Calderdale Companion was hosted by ROOTSWEB, until around 2016, when everything at ROOTSWEB seemed to vanish overnight and without any explanation.  I moved to a new host where it can be still be found via

calderdalecompanion.co.uk

Sometime later, the ROOTSWEB version rematerialised but is frozen in its 2017 form.

Question:  How do I remove my website from the ROOTSWEB host?

Why do I want to remove the website?  People are continually emailing me complaining (1) that material is out-of-date or incorrect, or (2) information that they have submitted to me does not appear when they view it online.

I long ago got rid of the URL addresses and passwords needed to handle the ROOTSWEB hosting site.

Thanks in advance.

Huntingdonshire / Can anyone indentify thie Huntingdonshire place?
« on: Saturday 31 December 22 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
My gt-gt-grandfather James Bull [b Huntingdon 1811] married a girl called Mary [b 1812] surname unknown.  In the 1871 census, Mary is shown as being born at the place shown below.  James and all their children are shown as born in Huntingdon, so presumable the wedding was nearby and Mary was born not too far away.  Any light that can be thrown on these details of the family will be much appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Albert Farrar [1882-1918] of Todmorden
« on: Saturday 12 November 22 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
On my Calderdale Companion website, I have an entry for Albert Farrar [1882-1918], a Todmorden man who died in the Great War.

http://calderdalecompanion.co.uk/mmf44.html#26

The CWG record shows Albert as a Gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery, whereas an item in the local newspaper at the time, the Todmorden & District News, shows him as a Signaller with the RFA = Royal Field Artillery.

Should I just go with the CWG details, or is it possible that Gunner & Signaller are equivalent, and RGA and RFA are connected?

Any thoughts would be welcome

Please note that my Calderdale Companion website is no longer supported on Ancestry's Rootsweb site:

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~calderdalecompanion/

That address is now obsolete and the information there is many years out of date.

Since the catastrophic loss of the data a couple of years back, the Calderdale Companion can now be reached via the address

calderdalecompanion.co.uk

Technical Help / Trouble with WORD & label templates *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 29 March 22 15:58 BST (UK)  »
For many years, I have used Avery L7163 template to print my address labels (14 to a page).  When I opened my address document in Word just now, the font size and the size of the individual labels were greatly enlarged.  I tried reducing the font size but that achieved nothing.  I downloaded a fresh copy of the template, and immediately on opening this, it displays the same hugely distorted labels.  I am not aware that I have done anything to upset the software, and this label printing is about all that I do with Word.  Any ideas on how to get back to the former correct dimensions?
