Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who? Help Please!
« on: Friday 13 March 09 16:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have tried to decipher two names included in the 1680 Testament of John McMurrie in Airds, Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, but am still unsure. Would appreciate all help/suggestions as John's spouse has a first name that is the same as the one starting with what looks like an E? Morgon? , and a surname that looks like Fairness? She is possibly the sister of the Blezina/Rozina.

Thank you!

Kirkcudbrightshire / McClune - Dunrod
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have mentioned the McClunes before in various posts about McMurrie/McMurray and related families, but am now ready to 'dig deeper' and would appreciate any contributions to unravelling some puzzles!

To recap: James McClune Abt 1688 - 1750 and his wife Janet Meiklemean 1690 -1775 are buried in the old Dunrod parish kirkyard, along with several other members of the family. They were at Little Kirkland and Mulloch area.  An Alexander McClune 1679- 1759 is also buried there, and could be a brother of James.  The McClunes and Meiklemeans are recorded as being Covenanters and were apparently in the SW of Scotland prior to the dates on the gravestones.

James McClune and Janet Meiklemean's children are:

Samuel 1724 -1786 married Sarah Coltherd/Coltart (my ancestral line - have researched)
Elizabeth 1724 married Solomon Wilkinson (have researched)
Alexander 1726 - 1752 married Nicholas Gordon (he died a year after their marriage and it is believed she remarried to Robert McClellan and immigrated to America)(some research)
James 1731 - ? married Marion Carson (researching)
William 1740 - 1812 Auchincairn/ Rerrick possibly married Janet Haugh (researching)

Also in Kirkcudbright at that time (pre 1855) were other McClunes who I have not been able to connect to 'my' McClunes, and would appreciate help with!

In particular:

Alexander McClune who married Helen Thomson 22/11/1781 (was he a brother of Samuel below?)

Samuel McClune married Mary Thomson 13/08/1774 (his son Thomas McClune 1788-1822 married Agnes Cochrane in 1805. Gravestone in Kirkcudbright. Agnes went to America with their son Samuel 1830-1893 d. Bridgeport, Connecticut, and she died in New York. Samuel Jr,s name changed to McLean.)

Samuel McClune married Mary Thomson 31/07/1805 Crossmichael (who were this Samuel's parents???) They had 17 children!

Patrick McClune married Helen Hannay 11/10/1759
Edward McClune married Marion McCaig 28/11/1758
Dunbar McClune - nothing known

James McClune married Margaret McCartney 21/10/1782
James McClune married Margaret McCartney 11/12/1794 ???

I'd be happy to share what I have with others researching the McClunes, and also help find possible connections for descendants in the USA who believe their roots are in SW Scotland - not Ireland.

Thank you!!

Kirkcudbrightshire / Meiklemean
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am curious about the surname Meiklemean, and wondered if anyone has come across it in their own searches, especially after 1855? Did the name perhaps change - to McMichan perhaps, or did the family just die out? I have found only three references: Janet Meiklemean buried in old Dunrod kirkyard (who married James McClune), both born in the later 1600's), Janet Meiklemean who is listed as a Covenanter (might have been the above Janet's mother), and Janet Meiklemean in the Rerrick Kirk sessions in the 1700's, pauper who received money. My searches yield nothing using this name and I'm hoping someone can suggest an alternative ???

Thank you in anticipation!

Kirkcudbrightshire / MCLEAN at Mark, Kirkmabreck
« on: Friday 14 November 08 18:17 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone researching this family? From the Testament of Mrs. Sarah McTaggart or McLean, who died 9 August 1849 at Mark. She was married to Alexander McLean (b. Abt. 1774 - d. 12 Feb 1833, Mark). Three daughters are mentioned in the document: Jessie (b.? d. 23 Jun 1879, Mark), Mary (b. Abt. 1801 - d. 29 Nov 1892) and Sarah (b.Abt 1816 - d. 23 Jan 1866). The three daughter would inherit the estate, but only on condition that if they married, they would forfeit their share!

Amongst other assets Sarah McTaggart McLean "held one tenth share of the sheep stock and certain other effects on the Station of Bergen Opzoon in the district of New England in the Colony of New South Wales ....about 17,000 sheep of different ages .....not worth more than Pounds 5,000".

Son John McLean seems to have gone to Australia. He died there at Port McQuarrie, New South Wales, on 1 October 1843 (b. Abt 1806).

Other children of Alexander McLean and Sarah McTaggart were:
Alexander (b. 1798 d. ?), residing at Mark in 1849
Margaret (b. Abt 1807 d.?), believed to have married
Samuel (b. Abt 1811 - 30 Mar 1877)
James (b. Abt 1814 - d. ?), Writer in Wigtown in 1848. He married Elizabeth Ronald and had children who were all born in Wigtown.

I am hoping that someone might have more information about Alexander McLean? Any history about Mark would also be appreciated  ;D  Scatza

Kirkcudbrightshire / McClellan in Bankend 1680
« on: Saturday 08 November 08 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
Help needed by McClellan researchers, please ??? The 1680 Testament of John McMurrie in Airds has several references to, and is signed by "Laird" John McClellan in Bankend. Since John McClellan, 3rd Lord Kirkcudbright died in 1664, and was succeeded by William McClellan, I am hoping that somebody can throw some light on this subject. Was John McClellan perhaps the son of William? Was he a brother of Robert McClellan below?

I am trying to find a link to Robert McClellan (b.1716 Kirkcudbright -d. 1789 Salem NY), married 1754 Kirkcudbright to Nicholas Gordon (1730 Buittle -1799 NY). Nicholas Gordon was previously married 14 Nov 1751 to Alexander McClune (b. 1726 d. 1751 buried Old Dunrod Kirkyard).  I have come across several trees that document Robert McClellan and Nicholas Gordon's line in America, but they make no reference to Nicholas' previous marriage to Alexander McClune. He must have died very shortly after the marriage.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Kirkcudbrightshire / EMIGRANTS to Canada mid 1850's on
« on: Sunday 03 September 06 06:33 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone refer me to sources that may throw some light on WHY there there might have been 'an incentive' to emigratie to Canada from Scotland in the mid 1800's? My William Henry McMurray b. 1832 in Tongland, and his sister Sarah McMurray, born 1835 in Tongland (two of eight children), emigated.  She married in 1861 in Ontario, and he in 1874. I assume, therefore, that they left Scotland in about 1860, or ealier.

Hopefull  :)

Kirkcudbrightshire / TWEEDIE of Stockmoss Smithy
« on: Sunday 03 September 06 05:39 BST (UK)  »
Why not ...a little side-step in the dance with my ancestors ::)

Isabella McMurray, daughter of John McMurray and Isabella Shaw, married John Tweedie June 30, 1854. in Rerrick Parish.  John  Tweedie was previously married to Jane Smith, who died at Stockmoss Smithy on 4 March 1853, age 24 years.

Stockmoss Smithy is still there. Tumble down sheds where one imagines the 'smithy' work took place; a 'compact' , dirty whitewash, double story house, neglected, and 'sad', situated just off a narrow tarred lane in God's Own County ..... Daffodils were blooming in the early spring when I (a McMurray decendant) visited for the first time in April 2006. Isabella died of TB (Pthisis) in 1984.

I keep trying! Is there anyone researching the Tweedie family and/or kin? Does anyone know anything of the history of Stockmoss Smithy?

Never-say-die

Kirkcudbrightshire / SHAW/McLEAN Kirkmabreck circa 1790's
« on: Sunday 20 November 05 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
Back again! No luck yet with my lost James McMurray b. 1826 in Borgue (like James, James, Morrison, Morrison,Weatherby George du Pre he must have gone down to the end of town ....?!), so I am hoping that perhaps somebody will be able to help me with his mother and her family?

Isabella Shaw was b. abt. 1806 in Kirkmabreck or Anwoth parish (census' have both). She was the spouse of John McMurray b. abt. 1797 Anwoth.

Parents of Isabella are given as Nathan Shaw and Isabel, or Isabella, McLean in her death registration. No record of Isabella in the OPR's, but I have found the following:

Jean Shaw b. 1796 and Alexander Shaw b. 1801 in Kirkmabreck, parents Nathaneal (Nathan) Shaw and Isabel McLean.

Then:
Sarah McLean Shaw b. 1798 and Mary Shaw b. 1799 in Kirkmabreck, parents Nathanial Shaw and JEAN Shaw.

I have been unable to find any further records for any of these probable siblings of my Isabella Shaw McMurray, and am hoping that someone nearer the source might know more about this family? Or the McLeans? I have a photograph of Isabella Shaw and John McMurray which might be of interest to any descendants also researching this family.

Thank you!
