Family History Beginners Board / Preston Family at Long Preston
« on: Saturday 24 February 24 05:22 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather, William Preston married Ellen Oldfield 1837 in Settle.  They went on to have, I believe, 13 children.

What I want to know is did William have any other family, siblings etc., and more about Ellen Oldfield because I can't find out anything prior to their marriage.  I have them on the 1851 Census with William as a Cotton Weaver but nothing before that.

Any help would be great.

Family History Beginners Board / Mary Byrne / Maria Burns
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 05:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for my great great grandmother.  Maria Burns / Mary Byrne.

Maria Byrne married John Connolly Sept 1855 in Liverpool 8B 546.  Names recorded as Joannis Connally and Maria Byrne. The marriage gives the father's names as Andrew and Thomas which is given to their later children.

However, at baptism of Eliza Ann Connolly dob 2/03/1865  baptised 14th March 1865 at St Anthonys Catholic Church mother's maiden name is given as Byrnes.

Spelling then varies to Joannis Connally and Maria Burns at the baptism of Andrew Thomas Connally Dob 21/12/1862 baptised 4th January 1862 at St Albans Church Liverpool.

In 1861 Census Mary Conolly aged 26 is head of the household and she is recorded as a mariner's wife (family history) and born in Ireland. When she registers her daughter Rose Ann CONLEY 1859, she gives her maiden name as BURNS.

With so many variations in the spelling of surnames it gets difficult to be sure if I am on the correct Mary Burns /Maria Byrne

I can't trace her back to Ireland and I am desperate to follow this maternal line - I find you can be surer of your maternal line than the paternal one - most of the time!  They didn't have DNA in those days!

Any assistance would be great.  Thank you

I am trying to trace the family back from Eliza Ann Conolli aged 18 when married to Jeremiah Sullivan aged 21 7th February at Immanuel Parish Church Oswaldtwistle Lancashire.

Eliza Ann was illiterate and only made her mark so not completely sure of the spelling of her surname.
Her father is down as John Conolli  - Sailor.

Would love to trace back to her mother and grandparents.

Think they were Catholics and maybe originally from Ireland - but thats just family hearsay.

I have a darning sampler supposedly from Oswaldtwistle Lancashire.  It has 5 darns and two sets of initials plus 1794.  On the rear of the frame there is a beautiful copperplate signature of Sarah Goddard December 16th 1794.  I was told the initial F. R. and S. G. make this a wedding sampler.  Don't know if this is true as never heard of this before.  Also over the top of the initials there are small crowns which makes me think it might be from Scotland.  Can any one find any marriage between a Sarah Goddard and a F. R. in 1794.  Thank you

Family History Beginners Board / Whiteoak Family
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have a Smith Whiteoak born approx 1846.  Smith Whiteoak was previous married to Ann Bank 1871 (Skipton (9a 77)but there were no children and she died March 1883 Skipton. He then married Jane Preston spinster June 1883 Keighley (9a 250)

They had a daughter Mary Ellen 3rd May 1884 Lower Clough, Brookden - birth registered in Sub district of Barnoldswick in the County York.

Jane previously gave birth to James Preston 23/07/1879 (my grandfather) as an unmarried mother (father unknown) in Long Preston Settle Yorkshire

Jane Preston is my Great Grandmother and after giving birth to Mary Ellen the whole family seem to disappear.  Can anyone come up with an explanation of how all three can disappear - Emigration ??

What chance would I have of tracing a Barbara Newman  - England 1707.  That's all the info I have but I don't think its enough as Newman was a common name, although in 1707 I don't think Barbara was.

Any suggestions or would I be wasting my time?

Thanks
