The Common Room / will reported in newspaper
« on: Today at 08:53 »
The will of Robert Mills who died in 1921 was reported in the newspapers, as was common to do at the time.
(I do not know why it says keep off the grass - the heading of the column is "Mail - Mustard and Cress")
If he was worth £96,000 and she was given £12,000 a year during widowhood, did he expect her to marry or die fairly shortly, or just assume that his heir/son would make up the difference?  He was about 70 and she about 45.
She did move to a slightly smaller house, but difficult to know whether she was renting or owning and there was also a London house around.

Thanks for any explanations.

England / Eric James Ching 1911
« on: Monday 26 February 24 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
Eric James Ching mmn Coutts was born in Bedford in 1911 to Margaret Aikman Coutts, born Dunfermline and Nehemiah Ching, a dentist, born London.
He married Emmie Wilson in Romsey in 1935 and they appear on ER's in Edinburgh before the war and Newcastle after the war in 1946.  Emmie is living with others from 1949 onwards in Newcastle initially.  In 1962 in Chichester she is with her mother (widowed) and potential son born 1937 but he is using her Wilson maiden name.   Emmie was with her parents on 1939 register and probably son redacted.
When Eric's father dies in 1960 he is not on probate.
Emmie marries Charles Palmer in Worthing in 1973 and dies in 1980.

There is also an Eric James Ching born Richmond 1909.

Can anyone see a death for Eric James Ching anywhere?

Thank-you

The Common Room / Engaged or Good friends
« on: Tuesday 20 February 24 09:34 GMT (UK)  »
In 1930 in the local paper a list of wedding presents received, with giver's names, is recorded.  A picture is from Jessie Smith and Mr S Bungay.  Jessie and Stanley subsequently marry in 1935.

As they have given a present together would they be engaged, or can they just be 2 friends?  In 1930 they would be aged 19 and 23.

Neither are siblings to the bride or groom, and all other present givers listed are either married pairs, family groups, singles or probably employers.

I did try google search but could not get anywhere so your ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

World War One / Abbreviations on disabilities WW1
« on: Tuesday 06 February 24 08:37 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone guess the attached or point me to a list of abbreviations for war wounds from WW1.

I have assumed G S would be gun shot, but the next 2 letters look like H N. Also that they were to the leg and chest.

If it helps, or doesn't, the disability was initially assessed as 50%, reduced to 40% then 30% after 2 years.

Thank-you

England / 1891 census
« on: Monday 05 February 24 08:19 GMT (UK)  »
On 31st March 1891 Edward Brooks, a corporal of Chatham Barracks age 28, born Cheltenham, was given leave to marry Fanny Maud Mary Adcock 27 of Plantation Road in Oxford (father James a waiter).  Their first daughter was born on 29th December 1891 in Headington.  Edward was 'at home' in this country from before the marriage until discharged in 1903.

Can anyone see them in 1891 census? They are not with her widowed mother and family. I thought they might be on the seas but there is definitely no indication that he travelled abroad again.

Thanks

Ireland / California birthplace claim
« on: Sunday 21 January 24 11:16 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1901 Irish census John Gillanders age 24 has his birthplace as California.  On the 1911 census he is back to Co Monaghan like the rest of the family.
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001151116/
If he was born abroad he should have put USA not California, but understandable 'mistake'.

I cannot find his birth in County Monaghan - parents Robert and Eliza Jane nee Reed for Robert and Mary Ann.
It is Robert (his brother) who I was researching - goes to England, is a vicar.  Just saw the California birth and intrigued.
Is there a tiny place in Ireland called California - I was not having any success with google searches, just getting hits for Hollywood?

Thank-you

The Common Room / dress description 1908 newspaper
« on: Sunday 07 January 24 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
The 2 bridesmaids in a wedding in 1908 are described as wearing Empire dresses of monseaurn directoire-de-soie, trimmed with tucked net.... See attached.
Anyone any idea what the reporter should have written down when he must have squiggled monseaurn?
Thanks

Armed Forces / Buying out of Army 1890's (and re-enlisting)
« on: Saturday 16 December 23 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Jesse Rawlence/Rawlance of Brockenhurst enlists in the army in 1893 and buys himself out in 1895.  This costs him £18 which would have been about a year's pay for a private.
In 1901 he is discharged as being medically unfit and having served a little over a year. I cannot see any re-enrolment records.

(He then marries in 1903, not clear when he left his wife, but pops up in America, 'marries' once or twice more, and stays there.)

Has anyone any experience of this sort of behaviour, or where the money could be lawfully obtained - his Mother had died and his father does not seem to be around - he gives a brother as next-of-kin.

Thank-you
