Canada / Private F.G. Ellerbeck in WW1
« on: Friday 27 May 22 08:24 BST (UK)  »
I should be very grateful if anyone can tell me anything (even just his full name!) about Private F.G. Ellerbeck, 17th Reserve Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (47145). I have discovered it's a fairly unusual surname in Canada, probably of German origin, but I haven't been able to find someone with the same initials. I'm not a relative, his name has come up in the course of research for an article I'm writing. Any help very much appreciated and will be acknowledged in the article.

I have been asked to post this by a friend of a friend of one of the organisers, and have no personal knowledge of it. However, if you are interested in RAF history and will be in the New Forest area over that weekend, you might like to go along!

The Common Room / Black list offence, 1929
« on: Tuesday 12 April 22 10:15 BST (UK)  »
I wondered whether to put this under 'Yorkshire' as it describes an incident in Leeds, but thought it better to put it here as who knows who will have come across this somewhere else! Thomas D Wilson was found not guilty of the offence, whatever it was, but I want to know what sort of blacklist was operating which would put a Leeds draper in court in 1929?

Australia / New South Wales -- Eugowra -- address
« on: Thursday 24 March 22 15:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have this address on a WW1 medal card, from an English emigrant applying for his medals. I wondered if anyone can tell me what the first word in it is? I have tried both 'Dychan' and 'Oychan' on Trove without success!

If anyone does know what it is (and even if you don't!) suggestions as to what an ex-sergeant pilot might be doing in Eugowra in 1922 would be welcome.

Australia / Obtaining digitised copy of South Australia death certificate
« on: Saturday 12 March 22 11:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have a death in Adelaide in 1922 and know the registration number etc from FindMyPast. Is it possible to obtain a digitised copy of the actual certificate, so that I can see what she died of? I am in the UK.

Other Countries / Ceylon -- any digitised sources 1905-10??
« on: Tuesday 08 March 22 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
I see that someone enquired eight years ago if any RootsChatter knew of a digitised source of arrivals and departures to Ceylon during the 1920s. My question is slightly different although I too would be interested in such a source.
Does anyone know of a digitised source of Ceylon English-language newspapers covering 1905-10?

In hope that someone knows something ...

London and Middlesex / Prison conditions during WW1 -- Wormwood Scrubs
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 13:48 GMT (UK)  »
I should be very pleased if anyone can offer me any help on this topic. I have a man in prison in Wormwood Scrubs 1916-1918. Unfortunately the London Metropolitan Archives don't have records of prisoners before 1917, and although he would obviously have been there then, the information is lost because all details would have been added to his 1916 arrival listing. The LMA could also offer me no thoughts on what conditions would have been like, except that he was doing two years with hard labour, and the LMA suggested that by that date he would have been sewing mailbags in the cell rather than breaking stones or a treadmill, but this is only guesswork.
Does anyone know of any published or unpublished sources which might shed light on this situation?

Other Countries / Census in India 1901?
« on: Thursday 10 February 22 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
Was a census taken in India in 1901 of British subjects resident there, and if so is it accessible online?

United States of America / Francis Oakley Wodehouse of Monmouth, New Jersey
« on: Tuesday 28 December 21 11:18 GMT (UK)  »
I should be very grateful if anyone knows of any way to find out the occupation of F.O. Wodehouse (1887-1978). Born in England, he emigrated in 1912 and settled in New Jersey. Before his emigration he was working for the Great Northern Railway. I know what his brothers did in other parts of the world, and would just like to be certain what Francis did for a living! Many thanks to anyone who can offer any help, and of course best wishes for the New Year.
